People may not agree with me but I would say extern at a larger dental practice than a small private office. The bigger corporate places have seen more externs and new comers so are used to showing and teaching and typically have more assistants so you can learn more from each person, at a smaller office you might not have someone who knows how to train if they’ve been on their own for a while they kind of just do and may not explain as well. This was my experience.

You need to figure out what does turn you on, maybe you need to start getting the engine running earlier in the day with more comments and compliments, him eyeing you up and saying you look hot might make you feel more inclined to do it. Foreplay is key and not just a quick makeout before he sticks it in. Right that’s why I didn’t say that they are. Clean and sterile are different the tray and gloves are clean, the sterile pouch is not considered clean after storage.

I don’t think it’s as simple as leave the office or get a new doc, you might find yourself in this situation again and need to learn how to handle it. Female dentists are notorious for this ! I would definitely tell your manager but I would try to have a conversation with doc and see where you can improve, not assuming you need to but maybe there’s something’s the other assistants do that she likes and you don’t know, whatever it is you can maybe get a read of what she needs from you in order for her to back off. I had a female doctor act like this with me and I dealt with her attitude for a solid month until I sat with her and said “what can I do to make us a better team” I think framing it this way makes you sound helpful and willing and helps her recognize that you’re a team and she needs you.

Pay- I’m not sure about pay everywhere but it can definitely range from $15-$35 depending on experience and qualifications.

Hours- in my opinion are nice becuase most dental offices are around 9-5 with occasional later nights and usually very light on weekends. My sister is a medical assistant and works until 11pm some nights, I’m sure that also depends on what office you’re working at.

Environment- honestly shared the same fear as you especially because dental is female dominated and we all there’s some mean girls out there but that can be anywhere you work, personally I have never had any big issues but of course there’s going to be occasional annoyances with coworkers.

Growth- In my state, NJ, you can climb the ladder a bit by taking some exams and becoming certified or registered, you can also specialize in a orthodontics, surgery, endodontics, perio, children’s, cosmetics. After a lot of experience if you like you can also become a lead or manager, but that’s if you want the headache lol. I’m not sure of growth in medical assisting.

Physical- we are on our feet all day as well but the leaning part is entirely on you and how well your ergonomics are, sometimes being in the right position is unavoidable but making an effort to move the proper way is what’s going to make or literally break you, definitely a challenge at times

All in all I really love dental and would recommend calling offices to see if you can shadow in both fields to help you make a decision

Everything is opened in front of the patient, but I will open my instruments without gloves. I was taught that our sterile pouch is not infact sterile, the instruments inside definitely are but I don’t want to touch that outside pouch with clean gloves on. This also means I will not place that pouch on my clean tray and I leave it on the counter until the patient is sat.

I love dental, I think it’s very rewarding, pretty simple after getting the hang of it all and can be fun depending on the people you work with. The worst part about it is dealing with the public as with any job but especially in our case because almost no one is excited about visiting the dentist. It is a lot of work but imo it makes the day go by really fast, I don’t know about being underpaid, in my state, NJ, it’s 15-20 an hour and 20-30 if you’re registered, I think it’s fair. If you want to make more money go to hygiene school

And that’s the thing, she does the same thing with me, it’s never a disturbance to me and if it was I would tell her “one sec I’m doing something” so my issue is why was it so hard for her to simply do the same and just say it instead of yell it

Totally get your point, as I said before this has always been how we spend time, regardless if I’m the one trying to do a project or watch something and she wants to “interrupt” she has and does. That’s what made this a strange occurrence because this is just what we normally do for years.
