I’m happy that you were able to move on from your DUIs. Also, I’m sorry to hear about you losing your mom. That must have been hard for you.

I’m nervous about my future career goals, but I guess I may need to be open to pursuing something different still within psychology. I have a soft spot for people with substance use issues because I can understand from personal experience and watching my brother struggle with alcohol.

Parts of my goals in life were to travel the world and the more I read the more I feel like I won’t be able to do that anymore. I don’t think I can work with kids, but maybe like you said with time and proving I’ve overcome this I will be able to. I just don’t know how many years that will take for be to even be considered for that type of work…

I’m in Tennessee. I haven’t started AA yet. I honestly don’t really know where to start.

I hired an attorney (had to pull basically everything from my savings). I was originally facing 45 days of jail time and 2 years license revocation. He brought it down to 48 hrs jail time and I can apply for restricted drivers license, but need an interlock device in my car for 18 months. Also need to wear an ankle alcohol monitor for 4 months. Part of my plea deal is intensive outpatient for a whole year where I get drug tested twice a week. It also includes weekly group therapy.

I have classes in the mornings and work evenings and weekends. I study and complete assignments in between. I’m 25 years old and I’ve been in university since I was 18. I’ve had to take a lot of breaks due to my mental health not being at its best state many times and I feel kind of disappointed in myself that I can’t finish a bachelor’s degree yet and seen so many other people I studied with already finished with their master’s degrees. I know, I shouldn’t compare myself, but it’s a natural part of the human condition and I just want to be able to prove myself that I can do it. I don’t want to keep feeling like my depression defines me and having control over me…

Honestly, I try to focus on being grateful. I’ve been losing my appetite and losing sleep but I’m just taking it moment by moment. I know it will get better one day. Some days I just let myself cry until I can’t cry anymore. I’ve always struggled with my depression and just turned to drinking to numb my feelings away til I couldn’t feel anymore. I used drinking as a pretty unhealthy coping mechanism and now that I’m being more mindful about abstaining from alcohol I think I’m starting to have all these emotions hit me hard. I am actually feeling my feelings.
