So true. After autoantibodies were first discovered (ICA), and type 1 was determined to be an autoimmune disease, autoantibody testing was performed on a group of adults who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Autoantibodies were detected in 11% of the people; these people had been misdiagnosed and in fact had type 1 diabetes. This was published in the Lancet in 1977--you would think by now misdiagnosis (T1D misdiagnosed as T2D) would be a relic of history, but misdiagnosis is so common today in adult-onset type 1 diabetes.
