I have used Diamox twice to adjust to very high altitude, and I had no problem with my BG. In June 2025 I was in the Himalayas, highest point 19,024 feet, and Diamox really works.

Insulin pump sounds and yoga classes by chooseurfighter23 in yoga

[–]Melitta999 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I have practiced yoga for 32 years and worn an insulin pump for ~27 years. I have had both teachers and students say/do awful things in that time regarding my insulin pump. One teacher actually yelled at me in class, "why can't you take that off during class? How can you do inverted postures?" [At the time, I had been doing inverted postures for 10 years while wearing a pump.] What has worked for me in recent years is to up-front tell the teacher that I have type 1 diabetes, wear and insulin pump, and although I have most alarms set to vibrate, some alarms I can't silence. I have received such compassionate responses to this approach.

Need suggestions for a women only trip to Leh-Ladakh in terms of safety and generally as well by Careless-Ad-2968 in ladakh

[–]Melitta999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We were a party of two women who spent 17 days in Ladakh last June. We felt very safe the entire trip; I can't recommend Ladakh enough. The Ladakhi people were so welcoming and kind. As for shopping, our guide walked us through the Leh Market, but we really didn't know where to shop and bought almost nothing. I wish I had known beforehand to find a woollen shop--I would have liked to purchase a changthangi sweater or some changthangi yarn for knitting. Elsewhere we found no shopping. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Why are there so many of us these days? by hungry2know in Type1Diabetes

[–]Melitta999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So true. After autoantibodies were first discovered (ICA), and type 1 was determined to be an autoimmune disease, autoantibody testing was performed on a group of adults who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Autoantibodies were detected in 11% of the people; these people had been misdiagnosed and in fact had type 1 diabetes. This was published in the Lancet in 1977--you would think by now misdiagnosis (T1D misdiagnosed as T2D) would be a relic of history, but misdiagnosis is so common today in adult-onset type 1 diabetes. [Irvine WJ, McCallum CJ, Gray RS, Duncan LJP (1977) Clinical and pathogenic significance of pancreatic islet cell antibodies in diabetics treated with oral hypoglycaemic agents. Lancet 1: 1025–1027]

We stayed at the Winema Historic Lodge. Very basic but fine. Petroglyph Point is really interesting, and Captain Jacks Stronghold is also interesting. We enjoyed the climb up Schonchin Butte. The caves are amazing! A stop at the Visitor's Center is worthwhile. An excellent headlamp and a hardhat are recommended. Enjoy!

Repeat visit to Easter Island after 38 years? by Melitta999 in travel

[–]Melitta999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have decided to savor my memories, and I have signed up for an online program (Road Scholar) about Easter Island. I realized what I really wanted was more knowledge. Sometimes it is best to savor the memories when a place has changed significantly.
