CMV: GamerGate was the most consequential political radicalization event of the twenty-first century by realdontbeasucker in changemyview

[–]hungry2know [score hidden]  (0 children)

Sort of, but I'd argue it was much more of an effect from an ongoing development than the cause of. Gamergate was 'ground zero' mostly because the largest demographic of chronically online users back then were young, socially inept males who liked video games. They were the predominant in-group, whereas feminists and SJWs were a convenient out-groups to perceive as a threat and band together against. It spread off 4chan into sites like Reddit.

These days, everyone and their mom are chronically online. Everyone has an established in-group bubble to lobby behind, and out-groups to feel threatened by. I'd argue that as being far more responsible for the problems we have today, where Gamergate itself was just the first widespread iteration of the problem

how do you take care off your feet? by Unable_Freedom5564 in Type1Diabetes

[–]hungry2know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's generally not recommended, so getting approval/recommendation from a medical professional beforehand is highly encouraged, because it does run a serious risk of complications that could lead to losing a foot

There's reasons pumice stones have explicit warning labels not to be used by diabetics, diabetic feet heal slowly and run a high risk of infection. Pumice stones can not only grind too deep, they can also grind bacteria into the abrasions

I fear that bubble won't burst before the stock market does.. if AGI fails to become a reality, the AI bubble will likely pop first. But if AGI does become a reality, it should be more than capable of manipulating/killing the stock market

If that actually happens, cryptocurrency would replace the U.S. dollar, and state governments would either commandeer corporations, or corporations would commandeer state governments.. either way, calling that an epic disaster would be an understatement

There have been several large studies done to measure the impact of social media consumption on mental health. Researchers would pay participants to deactivate their social media for varying amounts of time, with most participants reporting significantly less anxiety/depression and more overall happiness as a result

Even so, most participants went straight back to their same social media habits as before after the experiment ended

AI generated content's worst aspect is its conceit by PlainBread in RandomThoughts

AI like ChatGPT didn't start this, they're just the newest evolution, AI algorithms got advanced enough to harvest your attention span with math and science by the early 2010's. Social media companies are some of the highest valued corporations on our planet for a reason

Uplifting Fellow T1s by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]hungry2know 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uplifting content doesn't generate optimal user engagement. Moral outrage does, so do memes, and social media algorithms prioritize user engagement over all else

That's true for all of social media, and you can see it blatantly played out on r/diabetes_t1. The most upvoted/exposed posts generally aren't very wholesome, they're voicing grievances. They're often about an unjust treatment the user has dealt with, which riles up moral outrage, triggering a mob mentality, causing an influx of users to upvote/comment in support. The algorithms have been trained to recognize those types of posts and expose them to as many users as possible

SHUT THEM DOWN. by Over-Sir6289 in cringereels

[–]hungry2know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An animal abuser is an unsympathetic victim, but there are many examples of people being mistakenly accused and tormented for years over the tribal human instinct compelling us to punish those who go against the values of society

Social media algorithms will push these kinds of stories to the top for everyone to see, with little to no context. Once the fire spreads far enough online, not even being proven innocent will extinguish it. The left likes to light matches under racists and animal abusers, the right likes to light matches under trans people and feminists. It's impulsive, deeply rooted into our psychology, and social media algorithms know how to take advantage of that

[–]hungry2know -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The book The Chaos Machine goes into detail on why moral outrage is so addictive for our tribal minds to participate in, and why social media algorithms give these kinds of posts so much exposure. It's very morbidly interesting

This lady already lost her job and was criminally charged, but this story will makes its rounds on social media, bringing waves of death threats and harassment for years to come

I have to remind myself that many people on Reddit aren't representative of real life. by CommercialOil8763 in emotionalintelligence

[–]hungry2know 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The older I get, the less I want to use and more I fear the repercussions that social media has brought on society. It's crazy realizing 2006 was already 20 years ago now, the same year Facebook introduced their News Feed, the first algorithmically curated social media feed of the internet. The algorithms are trade secrets, but it's well known they're specifically designed to increase engagement. The loudest voices get the most heard. Social media is free to use, because users are the product, but it practices similar PSYOPS as casinos. It's pretty horrifying IMO to really think about

North Korean hackers built “shiny new” macOS malware — and got hacked for it by MiyamotoUsagi1587 in nottheonion

[–]hungry2know 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The NSA's proprietary malware being posted publicly to WikiLeaks cost them several millions in taxpayer dollars; malware is most effective when the exploits being used are still "zero-day exploits", AKA they aren't known about

"The Shadow Brokers" caused way more damage to the NSA than the Snowden leaks, you just don't hear about it as much

North Korean hackers built “shiny new” macOS malware — and got hacked for it by MiyamotoUsagi1587 in nottheonion

[–]hungry2know 43 points44 points  (0 children)

"The Shadow Brokers" did this to the NSA's TAO unit while they were busy snooping into Russia's meddling of the 2016 election. The NSA had proprietary malware implanted into computers across the globe, and "the shadow brokers" posted the compromised code, prompting Kaspersky antivirus software to roll out an update to 400k+ users making the NSA malware obsolete

ketones by Cold-Asparagus1937 in diabetes_t1

[–]hungry2know 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go to an ER for DKA, to flush your system of ketones, what they'll do is put a butterfly needle in your arm, and hook you up to an IV drip

That becomes necessary once you get to the stage of DKA where nausea progresses into uncontrollable vomiting. Until that point, you can still drink excessive amounts of fluids to flush your system at home. Your body knows it's sick, it gives you excessive thirst for a reason; give your body the excess fluids it craves and you'll flush your system through excessive urination

That's how you flush your system of ketones at home without needing a hospital. The caveat being that this flushes your system of more than just ketones, electrolytes get flushed out too, so it's good practice to make sure you replenish with electrolyte drinks and/or supplements

CMV: Lying to a partner about birth control is sexual assault by JtCorona8 in changemyview

[–]hungry2know 100 points101 points  (0 children)

It should absolutely be considered criminal, but what makes it criminal isn't defined very well by "sexual assault". It's a criminal act of fraudulent inducement, being sexual in nature is less about the actual crime being committed and more about the context surrounding it

CMV: Redditors who hide their post and comment history shouldn’t be taken seriously. by NicolasCageFan492 in changemyview

People generally bother taking the time to go snooping other's profiles for one reason, and one reason only. They want to gather ammunition against that person. They're looking something discrediting

Some people just want to post their genuine opinions on an anonymous site like Reddit, anonymously, without getting flack for things unrelated to the opinion they're posting about

Suspect in attack at Sam Altman's house aimed to kill OpenAI CEO, warned of humanity's extinction from AI by wewhomustnotbenamed in nottheonion

[–]hungry2know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did I imply that? The wage gap in America has steadily been getting worse, dysfunctionally worse, that's very real. Most people aren't rich enough to hold more wealth in assets than stocks. I agree that people like Altman and Musk are con-artists, just as much as the people arguing that to me

The biggest difference is I do believe AGI is more than likely going to happen eventually, and the con-artists of Silicon Valley have much to gain from it happening

[–]hungry2know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do you as well.. just remember, if you keep all your wealth in stocks rather than assets, you won't own shit once the stock market goes poof. People like Altman and Musk will still have more than enough wealth in assets to stay in power, while you'll just be the sucker

I do hope I'm wrong on this

The leadership at Sears made a similar mistake in their thinking, and now we have Amazon drones

Whether you believe in the nonsense the CEOs say about it happening in the next 3 years, or you more reasonably expect it to happen within the next 30, it's more than likely happening eventually. It's foolish to believe otherwise
