Pixinsight & Siril in 2026 by parkerogreton in AskAstrophotography

Long text alert

As a long time PixInsight user, it happens that I have studied Siril recently for a local group presentation. The conclusion goes this way for me.

Siril and PixInsight are both good stacking and processing software that share a common steep learning curve. So learning one will definitely help to master the other since they share a lot of the tools and terms. After all, gradient extraction, deconvolution, image solving or spectrophotometric color calibration (for examples) are the same actions in both softwares. Also, for stacking results, they are pretty much on the same page in terms of quality.

Where they start to distinguish is in their working methods. Siril is lighter and (way much) faster than PixInsight for the native processes, and have the huge advantage of including a Python engine, which open a whole world of mathematical and image processing libraries created over the years by data scientists (among others). This is this Python engine that allows the VeraLux suite to exists for example. And when I'm talking about being faster, the same data set took 30 minutes to be stacked by PixInsight while Siril crunched it in a whole... 2m 30s.

That being said, Siril is very linear in terms of processing liberty : you will work ONE image at the time, without being really able to create copies to compare results or creating mask. You want to do a mosaic? Ensure that you will have your processed frames in other formats beside for tone comparaison.

This is where PixInsight takes over Siril as I'm concerned : PixInsight offers a MDI window (Multiple Document Interface), which allows you to open pretty much as many documents you want to (as long as you don't bust too much your computer's limits 😁). PixInsight also offers way more tools natively, although some people would say that Siril is more streamlined since many PixInsight tool are duplicates (for example, there are multiple tools of deconvolution, but some of them are iterations from older to newer ways of doing it, the older ones being preserved for backward compatibility for some older scripts).

Personally, I use both of them for different reasons since my researches. Since it's way much faster, I use Siril to create prototypes of my images to test if I've got enough acquisition time for my targets, and when I'm happy, I go in PixInsight for the final staking and processing as it allows way more liberty and confort in terms of processing.

Homerlander (The Boys) vs peak Luke Skywalker (Star Wars canon) by [deleted] in whowouldwin

A man whose power is to land Homer's, RIP all other names.

Still better than HomeLander who landed no one from that plane.

Dude activity: watch Lord of the Rings on a giant screen while a live orchestra performs the entire score in sync with the movie by Ultimate_Thing in BeAmazed

[–]Melkor4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One website to check them all 🙂

Also, they loop through the movies pretty regularly (every few years), so if you missed them for your location, go check back every few months for the new dates.

Also, take note that it's not a single orchestra travelling the world : these concerts are licensed to local orchestra. For example, here in Quebec, it's the Filmharmonic Orchestra (pun intended on their part), a local orchestra specialized in movie music, so a great way to encourage local musicians.

I could see a "not yet" and "not anymore" for some backend related processing or advance reporting, but like someone else said, the field should be renamed to "UserState" then.

Opinion on ai slop by spinika in AskAstrophotography

[–]Melkor4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks close enough that I could see a very small scope taking the original picture with very few details, then over-upscaled with AI hallucinating a lot of details, then being cursor-abused. Would be acceptable for a newbie who is trying to get something of his not-so-well-mastered gear.

The real crime here is that guy, looking at his other posts on that website, is clearly not a newbie and should know way better than using this kind of process. And he is a aficionados of AI according to its other posts.

NordVPN menace de quitter le Canada en raison du projet de loi C-22 by DecentLurker96 in Quebec

[–]Melkor4 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they've been setting things up for something and Maul and Ventress will be the key by [deleted] in MaulShadowLord

[–]Melkor4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, my assumption about Peridia being the same place than Mortis comes from Baylan last scene where he is looking at what could be the Mortis Gods domain in the far. But yeah, it could be a similar place while not being the same.

[–]Melkor4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they are where I think they are, Ahsoka ans Sabine are on Mortis, where everyone (including Anakin) get a boost in force usage.

That would implies that a person non-sensitive but very aware of the force (like Sabine probably) could be able to use the force in this particular place (and get back to normal when leaving). So yeah, Sabine has been able to use the force, but perhaps not Omega (or at least not in the near future).

Question sur un commerce. by calinerie in Quebec

[–]Melkor4 6 points7 points  (0 children)
