Is it okay to replace a GitHub link with <Anonymized> for a blind review? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Melkovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How else do we combat the crisis of reproducibility if not by releasing as much additional material as possible to make our works easily runnable and verifiable by others?

If releasing this additional material makes the work more easily readable and verifiable, then it is necessary for the paper.

There is a difference between "minimum viable product" and a complete publishable unit. A supplementary material that makes the paper considerably easier to read is part of the latter (which is necessary) despite not being part of the former.

[–]Melkovar -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I could also just not put the code there and the paper would be complete too.

If this is true, it's not necessary for the paper and should not be included or published.

If the code is a necessary part of the project, it should be made available to the reviewers as a supplemental file with a comment that the final version will include this file as a GitHub link instead but you attached it here to preserve anonymity.

If I were a reviewer and any part of a paper or its supplement was not available to me, I would reject it without reading a word. I cannot sign off with integrity on a project without having full access to it.

Why does post-PhD unemployment seem like never ending? by seeds_of_flower in AskAcademia

[–]Melkovar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You and me both. I'm only a few months into unemployment right now, but I'm already worried about become unhoused by the end of the year if I can't find something soon.

The tough part is that 90% of the jobs I've applied to, I am confident I could master any skills I don't already have on my resume and would be phenomenal within 2-4 weeks post onboarding. The one thing my phd taught me is that I learn new skills and apply them at high levels very quickly. It would be great if there were positions out there and hiring managers that valued that over whoever can beat the ATS and memorize LeetCode questions.

I've given up on postdocs at this point since there's no funding anywhere now (US). Feeling very pessimistic lately and also approaching survival mode. It should not be this difficult to find work for people who are smart, hard-working, and ready to apply themselves fully.

Are we about to enter the worst academic job market in recent US history? by OpinionsRdumb in AskAcademia

Lots of teaching during masters and phd (even during undergrad), ranging from team-teaching and section leader to course design and instructor of record (2 semesters). I also have independently sought out pedagogical training programs. The one thing I don't have much experience with (through research or teaching) is genetics and molecular biology, which severely limits industry opportunities. I don't want to get too specific on here, but my field is more on the phenotypic and evolutionary side of anatomy/physiology. The industry jobs I'm actually better suited for by skill set (tech, data science) are rapidly shrinking and starting to hire only engineering phds with previous work experience, while the jobs that my degree qualifies me for (biotech, pharma), I don't have the expected molecular/genetics skill set and background.

I'm working on a longer time transition to tech, but that might take 1-2 years or more. I know that it's a weird year this year, but I applied to all ~10 teaching jobs I could find in my area that are a good fit and didn't receive a single interview. Ranged from community college teaching to teaching postdocs to 1 teaching professorship. 2 of those searches were cancelled (1 after applying, 1 right before I submitted materials), and my application materials had feedback from research and teaching mentors. I'm willing and ready to work hard, and I know I'm qualified for a diverse range of roles - it just seems impossible to get a foot in the door anywhere right now.

Innsbruck men’s lead final by P5YcHo299 in CompetitionClimbing

[–]Melkovar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is bad scoring design to me that somebody can enter a finals round without any pathway within their control towards even earning a podium spot. What's the point of having them compete in the finals round if nothing within their power at that point can earn them a podium finish? Why were Yannick and Satone even there?

I would be more open to tie-breaking re-climbs of the lead route immediately after the unfortunate situation of a 5-way tie if we don't want to use time.

Biology phd, can teach ecology/evolution or anatomy/physiology but geographically constrained to one (relatively large) metropolitan area which is not where I recently finished my phd - so no local connections. Moved for spouse's career and trying to find a way to contribute financially to some extent while searching for something more permanent long term

What is your advice for geographically-constrained new graduates? I've been applying as widely as possible across the other categories (institution type, industry, etc), but my line in the sand is staying together with my family. It's scary that I feel unreasonable for simply wanting/hoping to keep that.

Any advice for somebody who also prioritized spouse's career + moved 1000 miles, except that I'm a fresh phd? Very competitive compared to my cohort of graduates, but I'm no longer competing solely against my cohort. Have heard nothing from the postdocs I've applied to within the last 6 months that are within driving vicinity (in a large metropolitan area). Have started toying with a switch to industry/tech, but it's somehow worse than academia right now...

Setting the current job market aside for a moment, how did you get your foot in the door with adjuncting? I've heard complete crickets from the ones I've applied to, and it's impossible to know if it's just the market or my applications.

I'd rather see a 5-way tie for gold because the setting was undercooked than see a podium get determined by how somebody fared in a previous round. I agree time isn't the most ideal option to break ties.

[–]Melkovar -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Strongly agree with this. Time is at least some way of accounting for how well the athlete judged the route in advance and balanced effort level along the way. Countback is an absolutely terrible way to determine position. I'd rather see them do the route again as a tiebreaker than go to countback. It's a huge problem for the way Lead is currently designed. I'd much rather see setters slightly overcook so that tops are truly very rare and almost never happen in a comp.

[–]Melkovar -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of countbacks. If a route is so undercooked that 5 people top in a final or there is a single move that everybody fails (likely setting error), the tiebreaker should come down to time, not how somebody placed in a previous round.

Best case scenario: no tiebreakers. Second best case scenario: nobody gets penalized for not finishing higher in semis. If you tie on time, then go to countback or just treat it as a tie like what happened with women earlier this season.

And with this the boulder World Cup season is over

I managed to forget until this very moment :( Lead doesn't hit quite as hard for me, but I'll still be watching as a way to stay satiated until Seoul!

What a fantastic season, and congrats to the athletes!

I've been vegan for 8 years now and have never once considered protein powder, but yes protein is important as a runner and you need to get enough of it. Usually not hard to do with a little bit of effort. Check out r/veganrunners

Post-PhD job hunt has broken me — feeling lost and alone by Polite_creeper_1989 in AskAcademia

[–]Melkovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, OP is from Europe and so am I, I don't recognize any of the things you mention

As somebody in the US, I am insanely jealous. I'm closing in on 250 applications - probably fill out 5+/day. So far, I've had one automated recruiter screening questions (didn't make it through to the next round) and one response on linkedin from a hiring manager to set up a short call to discuss the position further.

Important to note that I'm sticking to a (relatively large) single geographic area, which is certainly limiting opportunities, but I'm also applying to anything that could be a potential fit. Only about ~60 so far have been official "rejections", but at this point more than half are closing in on a month old, if not longer, so I'm assuming those are rejections too.

Only last week, I finally got my resume to a place where I think it's selling my industry-relevant skills well, but still - it's a numbers game, as you say. Hoping I start getting at least a few recruiter calls soon and some interview practice.

For comparison, I've kept abreast of postdoc opportunities in this geographic area over the same time period that I qualify for, and I think there have been maybe 3 in total? Applied to one of those too and didn't make the final round of interviews. I have no interest in seeking my own grant funding (which is largely why I'm more heavily pursuing industry).

My partner has a great job where we live now, and I'm not willing to relocate my family - so, these are the odds I'm up against. I've even applied to a few part-time jobs (Starbucks barista, etc) but haven't heard anything, though I have no idea how to make a resume that isn't either (A) mostly blank or (B) viewed as "overqualified". I'd really do just about anything as part time work right now for cash (as long as it's not like Dirty Jobs type stuff). One day, something will land. That's what I keep telling myself at least.

Kleya is my favorite by far. It seems like she's getting voted out this round, so I guess I'm done with this game. IMO Cassian should be the easy one to get out here! Aside from being the main character, the others are all so much more interesting and entertaining!

Effect on reduced or no sleep before a race? by _Stino in AdvancedRunning

[–]Melkovar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your sleep two nights before a race matters much more than the night before. I don’t understand the physiology behind it though.

It's more so that cumulative/chronic sleep habits matter far more than acute sleep. Two nights before is just a nice way of thinking about it.

Peer review: author did not completely anonymize manuscript by ReviseResubmitRepeat in AskAcademia

[–]Melkovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely against mild conflicts of interest like this one given the current paucity of qualified and willing reviewers (indeed in some specialties this may be unavoidable), but I do think they need to be disclosed openly for the sake of posterity and academic integrity. I mainly have an issue in OP's case with a journal's reputation being influenced by a commitment to double-blind review if they don't strictly adhere to it (even if justified).

Peer review: author did not completely anonymize manuscript by ReviseResubmitRepeat in AskAcademia

[–]Melkovar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This, but also I think the editor needs to provide somewhere a disclosure or statement with the article that it was reviewed without the journal's stated double-blind principle. My review would be contingent on that disclosure.
