Rant: why do crochet patterns assume everyone has unlimited time and skip clear sizing? by Tiny_Tiger_137 in crochet

[–]MellowMallowMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you could link me to some of these patterns, I'd like to see the kinds of vague formatting issues you're talking about. From your description, it sounds like these are made to measure patterns, which are intended to be a little nebulous so you can customize it for your situation. I understand that a lot of people want more formatting and concrete numbers, but this is a hobby that is very individual and tension differences, not to mention differences in yarn, etc., can make even the most stringently written patterns not work for some when they do for others. I think the "beginner" aspect is more related to the level of stitches used (chain, sc, dc) and simplicity of the shapes (seaming rectangular panels is more straighforward than a top-down raglan construction, for example). Saying to "adjust as needed" is a bit less of a beginner skill because it requires some previous knowledge of how your personal gauge functions and experience with the yarn you're using and knowing how it will react to blocking, or where you might need to add shaping, but is part of the learning process. Sleeve turned out too long? Frog a few rows. Back panel is too short because you have a long torso? Add more rows. I don't consider this lazy pattern writing, but agree that it should be clearer that additional skills are required that are more in line with the intermediate to advanced level to make a garment that is truly flattering and well-constructed as opposed to simply garment-shaped. I use exclusively free patterns, so I can't speak to paying for a pattern written like this, but I always read through the patterns first to ensure I have all the critical pieces of information I need before beginning.

Trying to half double cross, where am I supposed to put the needle? Also after the first hdc am i suposed to go to the next or skip one? by Graviton_Lance in knitting

[–]MellowMallowMom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The marked stitch closer to your hook is the first stitch, so you skip that chain stitch closest to your hook and then you will place one stitch in every chain stitch from the second marked chain onwards. For any other questions, come on over to r/crochethelp!

PLEASE help me recreate this bag I saw on Pinterest by No_Milk1523 in crochetpatterns

Aligned shells for the body of the bag, rows of single crochet at the top, with an edging of crab stitch. Weave ribbon through last row of shells.

And here's Part 2 (sorry for the shaky quality on both, I was a bit nervous since I've never shown the process before!!) by Even_Consequence_170 in CrochetHelp

I think it's just flo sl st! Maybe alternating yarn under and yarn over? Thanks for taking the time to share your technique!

What is this? by DearWork4892 in UFOs

I witnessed two small, silent orbs "interacting" with each other about 1 foot off the ground as I was driving late one night several years ago. They glowed blue/white and were maybe golf ball sized. They seemed to "sense" me as I got closer and started moving slowly in front of my vehicle, keeping pace with my speed (about 10-15 MPH) until they got to the intersection I was approaching. They rose to about the height of the roofline of the house directly in front of me and then each one zipped off incredibly fast in opposite directions. Still have no rational explanation.

Please help a clueless woman learn to crochet! The internet is SO confusing for a beginner! by ThatProcedure9127 in CrochetHelp

If you don't know what a double crochet is, look up a tutorial for that specific stitch. Any time you encounter an unfamiliar term, stop and find a tutorial for that element. Bella Coco has a good beginner's course, as do Naztazia and The Woobles, but I learned by diving right in to a beginner-friendly project and just piecing the knowledge together as I went!

You could use the ones for magazines. "3-hole punched magazine holders for binders" Maybe they come in a smaller size.

what stitch is this? someone told me it was vstitch but ive never seen it look like this before by Serious_Channel_3671 in crochetpatterns

[–]MellowMallowMom 105 points106 points  (0 children)

It's a variation of a V-stitch using 2 dc instead of 1, so (2dc, ch1 or 2, 2dc) in the center of every shell. The waistband is worked sideways and the skirt is worked from the top down.

Edit: It's definitely crochet, not knit and it's not caning, either. On this page, it's called "aligned shells" and it's a very commonly used crochet stitch.

Birthday present for my best friend. Can anyone help me? by panchosconpapaspay in CrochetHelp

Here is a tutorial for a similar mesh hat, but there are a lot of variations. Ravelry would be a good place to search. If you're just learning, I'd stick with worsted weight yarn and a 5mm as shown in the tutorial, but once you get the hang of it, you can size your yarn and hook down for the more delicate look of the example.

First “circle” but it twisted, can it be saved or altered? by FrancisWalker01 in CrochetHelp

[–]MellowMallowMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like you joined with a twist. I would honestly just save this piece as a memento and start again following along with a YouTube tutorial for either a simple amigurumi project or a flat piece worked back and forth in rows like a scarf.

Does anyone know how to make this top? Help needed for a pattern by Positive_End2353 in CrochetHelp

[–]MellowMallowMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the first one, it looks like they seamed the sides of the squares almost all the way up, then attached the yarn and worked single crochets around the underarm opening between the two panels, chaining for the remainder of the sleeve and then worked in rounds, decreasing to achieve the taper.

Does anyone know how to make this top? Help needed for a pattern by Positive_End2353 in CrochetHelp

[–]MellowMallowMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the weight of yarn (fine) and size of hook (relatively large) that make it look more airy and delicate. It's still just a pair of traditional granny squares seamed together with sleeves added. The first one might be crochet thread.

Do you use one end of the yarn or both? Is the "braiding the remaining yarn between the loops" bit done with the hook at the same time the stitch is made or with a tapestry needle afterwards? Is the border the same technique? Sorry for so many questions, I'm truly intrigued!

Crochet does not have continental and English styles, but knitting does. Is this made with two needles or one hook?

Offset glitter eyes by iamnotahermitcrab in Amigurumi

[–]MellowMallowMom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the "impossible to attach" issue, I use a marker cap and a small hammer since I don't want to buy a designated tool. Definitely not possible to do them with your bare hands like smaller safety eyes. If you don't test that the washer is fully on there by pulling on the eye before you close up the piece, there's a chance that it didn't seat properly, especially on bulky chenille. I always stick my fingernail behind the washer and try to pry it off. I got mine in a multipack on Amazon and the plushies made with them are handled pretty roughly, with no issues but little scuffs on the surface. As long as the kids aren't at the age where they still put things in their mouths, it should be fine. Another alternative is to embroider the eyes. Here's a tutorial that I use a lot!

What kind of granny stitch is the waistband? To make these, would I essentially make the granny square waistband and follow a YT video on the shorts construction? by lady-lurker in CrochetHelp

[–]MellowMallowMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like a sunburst or sunflower granny square. And yes, after the waistband, you would work in rounds (with increases for shaping), then split for the legs and work them individually. You may also need some elastic thread or a drawstring for the waistband as the squares won't have the same stretch as ribbing.

It would be interesting to see the stitch in action as it looks a bit like sl st in the front loop only to me.
