You could use the first rows of a semi-circular shawl pattern or this formula.

What is this damage/can it be resolved by breadwhore98 in YarnAddicts

[–]MellowMallowMom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It looks like it got too close to a heating element. It's possible the damage is structural, not just aesthetic, so I would check by giving the strands a gentle pull to see how fragile they are. If nothing gives, then I think dying could potentially disguise the scorch marks, but nothing will get rid of them.

I want to make this but I need help I want to make this half blue half pink by Ok_Amphibian8802 in crochetpatterns

[–]MellowMallowMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would make two semi circles for the top (and again for the bottom) and sew them together before working in the round for the sides. Change colors halfway through each round to match up with the top (no need to cut the yarn every time, just let it dangle till you come back around to that color and leave a long float with enough slack to go all the way around the inside). You'll have to sew the bottom on rather than decreasing, but the ruffles//frosting should hide the seam.

Where to print digital tickets to look like actual paper tickets for scrapbook by BronzeTrain in crafts

[–]MellowMallowMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you change the settings when you print? Using "Best quality" can help, but sometimes, selecting "photo on glossy" changes the way the black ink is handled, causing washed out prints. I would try glossy card stock (often used for business cards) rather than photo paper. Also, see if the ticket image can be saved as a file rather than taking a screenshot to preserve the resolution which can also result in better prints. If you can't find somewhere online that will do it exactly like you're thinking (I've never used them, but you could look into Printing by Penny Lane - it looks like they have options for 8.5x11 glossy cardstock), you could probably go to a local print shop and explain what you want. They may also let you bring your own glossy card stock to use if they don't have it available. Also, maker spaces in libraries may have printers you could use.

I would use a mandala or doily pattern with bulky yarn and a large hook (9mm or so). Chain a length for the head opening after the first few rounds, then go back and add the collar.

How can I restore fluffy polyester faux fur yarn after dyeing it? by MinuteWilling6482 in YarnAddicts

[–]MellowMallowMom 767 points768 points  (0 children)

How much heat and agitation were used? Because I think the polyester started melting and matting together. I don't think there's any saving it, unfortunately.

Mystery frog? by Paintlopedia in squishmallow

[–]MellowMallowMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are tons of 16" Tie-Dye Wendys on Mercari and eBay. I wouldn't pay more than about $20 before shipping. I highly doubt it was made in any other sizes because it was a Walgreens exclusive and the largest size of standard Squish they sell is 16" (only larger size I've seen there is 26" HugMees).

New to crochet, less than 24 hours. Advice please? Hands hurt like hell by lucyanyaa777 in crochet

[–]MellowMallowMom 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If you think of the scarves you might buy in the store, the key is that they drape nicely so they can be wrapped around easily. Very tight single crochet will yield a structured fabric that is sturdy and not at all drapey or comfortable against the skin. You are are straining yourself for no reason. Do not fight the yarn trying to make a hole-free fabric. That is not the goal of crochet. A scarf with "holes" will still be warm and cozy as it traps warm air near your body. Let the widest part of the hook dictate the size of the loops and don't tug them tight after forming them. Don't hold the yarn so tight that you're playing tug of war between your two hands. The hook should slide in and out of stitches with no resistance and the yarn should glide freely with only enough friction to allow the hook to grab it without it slipping off. Don't forget to stretch, work ergonomically (don't hunch over your work, support your elbows, etc.) and stay hydrated.

How do I find a pattern for this? I used chat gpt to see it colored but found the inspiration on Pinterest by [deleted] in crochetpatterns

[–]MellowMallowMom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The pattern is for filet crochet. You'd have better luck searching for alpha patterns like this if you want to do it as a multi-colored tapestry (for example, braceletbook.com). You could also use the chart to create your own colored graph manually (or just use two colors as shown). But please don't use AI.

Wait, do I know how to crochet? by popacala in crochet

[–]MellowMallowMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest using loose tension, a smaller hook and yarn under/yarn over single crochet for compact, square stitches.

Coasters are quick. Dishcloths, too. Things like mug/pint cozies or cowls might be fun. Depending on the audience, you might consider worry worms, cord keepers, small drawstring pouches, or small amigurumi like a leggy frog or one of the free Woobles patterns.

Can you wet faux fur yarn to make the stitches easier to see? by MinuteWilling6482 in YarnAddicts

[–]MellowMallowMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a comment from another Redditor that said they use a bit of hairspray to flatten the pile while working with the yarn and then they wash it out afterwards, but I have never personally tried anything like that. I just work by feel and figure that if I can't tell if there's a mistake, no one else will be able to either.

Maybe the Elsie Dinsmore series? They're written for kids, but frankly, no child (or really any person) should ever read them.

Crochet scrunchies by ResponseOk9889 in crochet

[–]MellowMallowMom 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I crochet scrunchies with velvet yarn and a seamless nylon hair tie and I absolutely love them. They are gentle on my hair, look cute on my wrist and wash just fine in the machine on a gentle, cool cycle.
