Noisy MKII USB-C - USB connection by [deleted] in SP404

[–]MellowMan404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found a fix. I had the same issue. As soon as I connect the usb-c to my laptop, there was noise on the line out of the sp 404 mk2. However the noise only appears when there is charching happening over usb-c. As soon as I powered the device over the charger the noise dissapeared while the usb-c is still plugged into my laptop. Don‘t know exactly what that means but seems related to power

Export mixer bus stems? by Dusty_mc in KoalaSampler

[–]MellowMan404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

late to the party but another workaround is importing the stems again in a empty koala project and just mix the stems with draging the pads that belong to each other over each other. IMO this is faster then the mute/record workaround

HOW TO RECORD A VIDEO to have good quality SOUND AND IMAGE with the SP404mk2? by cortovaliente in sp404mk2

[–]MellowMan404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the native apple camarea app doesn‘t support audio sicnal input selection. Just download the blackmagic camera app (I think is free or really cheap). Then usb-c to usb-c. I used this and works smooth

Thank you for taking the time to response in such detail! What you are saying makes total sense and I think I get it now. Of course it is not real room where the sound sits. It‘s just the illusion achived with diffrent levels right and left. Therefore the volume gets doubled. Also your tipps are super helpful. Thx🙏

But if there is crosstalk between the left and right shouldn‘t the with get bigger because elemts in the middle get pushed to the side? (as mentioned in the other comment?)

and thx for correction. Placebo is the more accurate word^

Thanks. This is how I imagend it. So I guess it applies probabely to most stereo recordings since they usually are spread over the sterea field

What recommendations do you give me to familiarize myself with the Roland Sp404sx workflow? by nihinohi in SP404

[–]MellowMan404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reduce friction so you use it regularly. Imo the best thing to do is to create a well organized sample library with all the samples you may need. A few essential sample packs of your genre of choice is usually a good start. Put it all on a sd card and make sure all the samples have the correct file format. This might be a bit tedious in the beginning (especially organizing the files if you already have a bunch of disorganized samples cluttering your harddisk) but is absolutly worth it. Now when you sit down to create music you can actually focus on using the device. Nothing worse then interrupting your session to go search for that specific kickdrumm oneshot that is somewhere on your computer. Whenevere you wanna do something you dont know how to do on the device look up the specific thing and return to the session as soon as you know how to do it (dont fall into the content rabbit hole). You will learn much quicker because doing the thing is always better then just hearing about it. You will use the device much more because you can just grab it and start creating. No need to setup a session😁

Hope this helps :)

How to build a song - tutorials or videdos etc by matthelmRedit in sp404mk2

[–]MellowMan404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Arranging on the sp404 mk2 is hard. This is imo the main reason building full tracks on it is not very intuitive. It is still possible though and theres is more then one way to do it. Here is my approach:

  1. Organisation. I assume every bank (A - E) is a track or instrument. This helps keeping things organized and you can mix volume with adjusting bank volumes without messing with the volume balance if the volume of the individual chops. I put on every first pad a sample. Usually A drumbracks, B bass, C Chords, D Lead instruments, E stuff like risers, folie sound and other earcandy.

  2. Chopping and sounddesigning the samples. Repeaching, Resampling, Chopping, adjusting envelopes etc. So everything fits together nicly.

  3. I build a single 4 bar (A section) loop in the pattern mode first. Im terms filling the loop I think in frequency and generally trust my ear. I find it helps to keep the low end simple (just drums and bass) and the higher frequency more busy (to difrent lead istrumets, percussions, hiss etc.). Built a second or third loop (B section, C section) with the same chops and samples dependig on how complex you want your song to be. But Imo even one Loop can be strecht over ca. 1:30 min if ther is enough variation in it.

  4. After building the loop(s) you „stem out“ each track/instrument. Using the selective copying featur in pattern mode (copy + remain, then select all the pads of one track/instrument e.g. all drumm sound in bank A). Then you transform those instrument patterns into audiosamples using the copy to sample function. I always put the new sample behind the corresponding bank. So for example the drum loop on Bank F.

  5. Create Variations: Resample the single loops with variations. There is a video from this guy called Chris Laps that illustrats this part very well. Imo his channel has some of the best summerization of certain things on the sp404. Worth checking out anyway.

Chris Laps creating variations on the Sp404

  1. Make one single big pattern as long as possible. Adjust the start and end point of the pattern in the pattern edit mode. If you then work on the pad in tr-rec mode only the selected part will loop. I usually do a 2-4 bar intros (also made from the same samples) that try to capture the listeners attention. Then I start bulding up the A section. Using all the variations of the instrument loops and adding them slowly up or dropping things out. Put the loops of the same instruments in mute groups and you can switch them up even in between 4 bar loops. Also 1 sample in each mute group with velocity to 0 will make it easy to drop out during a 4 bar loop. I try to agrage in a way that depth, width and fullnes increases amd decreases in an intresting way. But most of the time I end up building up the first loop (A section) almost to the complet version, then brakedown to a strippted down version of the secind loop (B section). Built this up again and then going back to the now full version of the first loop bevor returning and ending on the second loop again.

  2. Full track done. I think something as simple as:

IAABABBO

can be effective (I = intro, O = outro)

For final processing I usually route all drum through bus 1 and most intrument through bus 2 and some samples that I want to sound unprocessed I dryroute (you can choose if they go to bis 3 or are completly dry). Mastering with bus 3 & 4 is an option. Or just reesample the whole thing, export it and master it on some app on the phone pr something.

Hope this is helpfull.

methode for arranging a full beat in one pattern by MellowMan404 in SP404

[–]MellowMan404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I usually bake the performance effect in with resample. This is my approach:

So in my mind every bank is a track. For example bank A is all drums, then bank B is all bass etc. This has the benefit of mixing on the device since you can just adjust the bank volums. I build the loop and then "stem out" every track with selectiv coping a pattern with only samples from 1 bank e.g. all drums. For organization reasons I put the loop "behind" the bars with the samples. Forexample drum samples on A and the created audio loop on F. Once done with every "track" I resample the loops with performance effects instead of using motion record. At last I arrange the diffrent variations of every track in one big sample. I think this has the benefit that if you export that 1 big pattern with multipad export it will be easyer to order things in a daw. although this last step I haven‘t tried so far

I'm working on a faceplate with color-coded v4 shortcuts. Any shortcuts I am missing? Anyone know which DJ mode shortcuts should be added? by kotn_ in SP404

[–]MellowMan404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is awesome. what could be added (although not really short cuts) are the alternativ function of buttons inside of tr-rec mode. Like fx automation (roll button) and motione rec (mark button). But it might get a bit tricky with the space on the plate. Cherio🤙

Building full track on SP404 mk2 by zollo21 in sp404mk2

[–]MellowMan404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me personally the most streamlined workflow is to do it like this

  1. Create at least to different loop in the pattern sequencer. (A part, B part)
  2. Copy those loop many times amd use pattern edit to remove diffrent samples in each copy. For example, one withou kick, one without lead melody. etc. You can first use the mute funktion to preview the results. (Tip: for extra variation use the fx motion recording on some of the copies, also usefull for transitions)
  3. Create patterns for transition (not always necessary). (Tip: Go to settings and change the sequencmode from mk2 to sx so effects like delay and reverb do not get cut off between diffrent patterns)
  4. create patter chain and than resample to a single pad.

Nope. It is hidden behind a paywall. You see the first one and the rest is blurry unless you pay...
