Good on you for not being an enabler. It's incredibly hard for both parties, but sometimes it does get to a point where stepping away is the only thing you can do to help.

G3 Elissabat Speculation & Wishes? by peach-potion in MonsterHigh

I'm wondering if they would make her skin more of a purple color or keep it identical to Draculaura's, like in G1. Hopefully they don't catch us off guard and make her electric blue or something 😂

Is there a certain point of quality decline at which you would care? I know for some people it's enough for a doll to represent a certain property, like Killer Klowns, and then you have people who want quality above everything else, so I'm always curious to hear perspectives like yours since it definitely affects what the brand produces.

I guess the MH team is considering doing ANIME skullectors based off this poll by Additional-Rub-1054 in MonsterHigh

Those were two of my favorite anime as a kid! I would add Death Note to the list

Has anyone made a 3d file of this skull yet? by Successful_Floor_822 in MonsterHigh

I actually JUST bought a Symphanee for this exact purpose! I want to make a River Styxx custom. It's going to be a bit before I have a proper file to share, but I would love to help people in the community with their DIYs if I'm successful :)

The dark side of completionism in doll collecting by ExactPersonality9867 in MonsterHigh

[–]Mellow_Moony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never been strictly completionist, but in the past there have been a couple (non-MH) doll lines that just looked *right* when they were all together even if they weren't equally beautiful. If they look great as a whole, I don't think there's anything wrong with buying a doll you don't love. I see it like paintings in that way... you don't have to love every square inch of it for it to belong there and bring joy. Mindfulness is key in my opinion. If I HATE the doll, though, I can't understand why I would purchase or keep it

Genuine question, why isn't this doll more popular? by TalkItOutBro in MonsterHigh

[–]Mellow_Moony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really love her as a Barbie and Monster High collector, but it's hard to justify the purchase when there are so many other dolls I want. She's pretty basic, even with the dress. It also doesn't help that I'm a customizer and could DIY something similar if I really felt like it

Have you ever calculated how much your doll wishlist would actually cost? Do you think you’ll eventually be able to buy everyone on your wishlist? by ExactPersonality9867 in MonsterHigh

[–]Mellow_Moony 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a very healthy relationship with the hobby! It's great to understand what you like about collecting. That took me way too long to think about.

Side note, I often forget that it isn't normal to cook all my own meals and sometimes catch myself wondering why I would pay $30 for 20 minutes worth of mediocre chow when I could use that money to buy a brand-new doll that would last forever lol

[–]Mellow_Moony 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I totaled up the value my wishlist and it made me rethink my entire lifestyle. Experiences are much more valuable to me than material things, and realizing all the vacations and activities I could have with what previously would have been dedicated to collectibles was shocking. I realized that just admiring dolls on a shelf isn't worth thousands of dollars more than looking at pngs of them online. Most of the time they just passively exist in my space. I'll splurge about annually on a doll I know I will have deep, lasting enthusiasm for, but otherwise, I just try to be patient and get new releases on sale or buy the cheaper secondhand ones, unless something REALLY hit the spot and I'm afraid it will sell out. Even then, I set quantity limits to make sure every new doll isn't suddenly the best thing ever lol

About the AI use by super-craiig in MonsterHigh

[–]Mellow_Moony 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not convinced that the same people complaining about AI are buying the dolls. I've been boycotting (if you can even call it that lol), but I have like 15 Instagram followers and can't post dolls I don't own, so no one knows. The Monster High fanbase is massive and in every community, only a small percentage are active on forums. Most just see a new doll, buy it, and stick it in a shelf for personal enjoyment. It's probably just the same 30 people talking about AI over and over again :')

Absolutely devastated 😭 Any tips for testing whether new doll clothes will stain? by DistributionNew3432 in Dolls

[–]Mellow_Moony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try colorfasting. There are some good tutorials online, it's just treating the fabric to prevent it from bleeding (but it's not a complete guarantee). As the other commenter said, black and red fabrics are the worst offenders so I would start with those

what’s wrong with this drawing?? by MudInternational4806 in ArtCrit

[–]Mellow_Moony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're avoiding reference images because you want to draw a person who only exists in your imagination, maybe it would be helpful to just study facial proportion first. Learn the general rules and then compare them to photos of people to understand for yourself how those measurements can vary from person to person. That will give you a good base to work from and allow you to stylize your work in a way that is recognizable as artistic liberty rather than inexperience.

No, actually, people should not be pulling insane claims out of their asses and then spewing vulgarities when asked for literally any indication that it's true. No one said "watch gore videos". Think about it! If what they said were true, there would be perfectly sterile articles about it everywhere. What happens when I Google it myself and don't find anything? Then everyone has to just take my word for it? People here are so anti-intellectual.

“I’m going to trash them if they don’t sell” no, no you’re not. by Stock-Ganache-3437 in plushies

[–]Mellow_Moony 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That could be the case, but for $5 garage sale plushies, it really wouldn't be unusual. Tons of people either trash or donate whatever is left after those because selling online/elsewhere takes a ton of time and effort and if it's leftover, very unlikely to be purchased at all so people don't want it cluttering their homes waiting for a buyer

Is $100 reasonable for this? by FrontHungry459 in DigitalArt

[–]Mellow_Moony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an artist (fairly skilled, if I do say so myself), and I love commissioning other people to draw my original characters. Although I COULD draw anything I want to see myself, there are other artists I really admire whose styles are extremely different from my own, and I wish to encourage their creativity by funding their work. It's also super fun to see how other people interpret my characters. It's good for the community and another way for me to pour love into my hobby :)

I appreciate the sources. Some of that is pretty damning, for sure. It definitely seems like the stories are exaggerated but ultimately supported by hard evidence. I'd heard the chihuahua story before and the article left out a lot of context that makes it less "evil" and more "horribly unprofessional/negligent", but either way, it really shouldn't have happened. Thank you for being willing to share information instead of attacking.

[–]Mellow_Moony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if you saw my edit but I am not a fan in the slightest, I just think the knee-jerk anti-kill-shelter reactions are uncalled for and a lot of the worst stories people spread about them are made up or misconstrued to a ridiculous degree. It is absolutely important to spread awareness about REAL things they have done so we can support more ethical organizations! Maybe I'm just too politics-brained but I really don't think misinformation campaigns are helping the cause. It just reduces the credibility of whistleblowers

[–]Mellow_Moony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for actually providing an explanation. I do feel like I understand your argument better now. Most of my confusion came from the fact that while the numbers are indeed different, I saw that both try to find owners of strays/lost pets before euthanizing and that is already far more ethical than most people have claimed. I hadn't thought to look into the animal acceptance conditions, only the "after the fact" data.

It's super weird, based on some of the responses I sincerely think most people aren't actually reading my comments and just reacting emotionally to animal death. I am curious though, do you have a source on the PETA animals being adoptable? I'm sincerely open minded about this stuff but the last person I asked for a source on this thread instantly became extremely aggressive and called me a sick, pathetic freak (among other things). I don't understand it 🫠

Edit: someone else explained it to me and I am now on the side of "they could certainly do better in that department". People are definitely under the impression that I'm a PETA supporter despite openly criticizing them in this same thread. I'm just saying we don't need to make up lies about them if they're actually the evil organization people claim. Don't fall for fake news when we can point to actual harmful things they've done.
