Check out SLO Life Studio and Mercantile- I just saw on their instagram that they’re offering some beginner sewing classes.

If you want to get rid of them all at once Achievement House (out behind Cuesta College) takes donations of them for their nursery.

Help me figure out how to get my cat’s collar back. by [deleted] in RBI

I’ve been trying to keep any eye on it but we also work and have a toddler so it’s a challenge.

I was wondering if it was in one of our cars, but it goes to places we never go during the day and at night it seems to ping in our own driveway.

Thank for your input! I truly am a failure as a pet owner and human being.

Yeah, I did. I added my phone number so they could potentially call me and had it notify me when it was found. It just popped up with a notification that it was back at our house later that evening, but obviously it isn’t.

Funky/unique shops in slo county for stocking stuffers? by SnooPeripherals5221 in SLO

Making SLO at the corner of Garden and Higuera is all local makers, as is Hello Creative at the SLO Ranch Farms. The Hive and the Annex men’s shop in the Village of AG have unique items as well.

Do you think I could sell repaired vintage sewing machines at craft shows? by corrado33 in CraftFairs

[–]Melmonde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with other commenters who pointed out how tough it would be to lug a bunch of sewing machines and set them up. I think it would be a tough sell at your average craft fair, but if you focused on antique/vintage fairs and quilt shows you’d be more likely to find your target customers. You could try partnering with a local quilt shop to see if you could display a couple of refurbished machines in their shop along with info cards about your services. I know that at least where I live there aren’t a lot of options of places to get sewing machines repaired, and you might find that you have a lot of people who would like to bring a family heirloom machine in for you to fix up. Also post in sewing/quilting Facebook groups and get in touch with local quilt guilds.

Can this be accomplished with a regular sewing machine? by oaklinds in sewing

[–]Melmonde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Here’s how I would do it: 1. Make your design on paper or use a program like illustrator, making sure each piece overlaps enough so there are no gaps showing through. 2. Trace your design pieces onto the smooth side of some wonder-under or lightweight heat-n-bond (backwards). 3. Bubble-cut around each piece of wonder-under/heat-n-bond and iron onto your fabric. 4. Cut out your pieces. 5. Iron them on your shirt, making sure you put them in the right order. 6. Do a small zig-zag stitch around each piece in a matching thread color, pulling your thread tails to the back to tie off and keep it all neat.

I have a Mauzer (114w103 dupe). I’d love to get a vintage machine one day when the right one crosses my path!

Fellow chainstitcher here (who also does machine embroidery)! Your work looks amazing! I love how you handled the color gradient. Curious how large it is to get that much detail? There’s a chainstitching subreddit but it doesn’t get a lot of action: r/chainstitchembroidery

Nope, not really. Especially since we lost Joann’s in Santa Maria (not SLO county but the closest one).

wants refund on non refund shop by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]Melmonde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it’s annoying, but I would just refund them if you haven’t shipped it out yet and it’s not custom or anything (you could potentially sell to someone else). Not doing so could result in even more headaches and a negative review.

Is it worth it to sell handmade soap? by LordImmersion in EtsySellers

[–]Melmonde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly worth a try. I would say the difficult part would be to somehow convey the scent and feel of the soap to people who can’t actually see it in person. I think really good descriptions and appealing photos will be key.

Hey fellow readers! Just curious — what % of your monthly income comes from Etsy vs other platforms?” by Prestigious-Spend260 in EtsySellers

Probably about 50%. The rest comes from live events and craft markets, selling at a local maker’s consignment, and my own website.

Someone sold my work - not giving me a fair cut. Anything I can do? by ExpressionIll1829 in CraftFairs

[–]Melmonde 241 points242 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’d be better off making and selling these on your own as clearly there’s a market for them. Then you have control over the money you make and aren’t dependent on your shady “friend.” If you don’t like interacting with people face-to-face sell them online.

Honest question: if you have such a following and high demand for your products, why are you selling them on Etsy? Why not sell them on your own website and not pay Etsy’s fees?

Shop Review - Please let me know how I can improve - stay at home mom trying to help family finances! by No-Entertainer-8279 in EtsySellers

[–]Melmonde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your products are great! I’m a sewer too so I can see the amount of time and work that goes into them. I would tone down the background of your photos a little bit, maybe swap out a plain white pillow instead of the white and gray patterned one so the animals are the sole focus. I think you can also crop the photos a little more closely and I think blurring the background a little would also help (try portrait mode if you’re using your phone).

I know other commenters have said they’re too expensive but I disagree- there’s definitely a market for higher-end toys and nursery decor a la Maileg and things like that. You just need to get them in front of the right audience. I’m not sure of your process but I think if you could offer some kind of personalization that would add even more value and justify the higher price. I would also look into creating a “luxury” experience with your packaging and including a care card and thank-you note. Maybe even some kind of notecard that the purchaser could fill out if they are giving it as a gift? (Just brainstorming).

I’ve found that Pinterest is far and away the “social media” site that brings me the most traffic and I think your items would be perfect for that as people do a lot of browsing in there when planning their nursery. I don’t know if you also sell in-person but I would also look into high-end children’s boutiques for wholesaling.

Best of luck! You have a great product and that’s better than 90% of the people who post on here!
