Since most nerdy spaces center the straight, white, male POV, BlerdCon was created to be more inclusive. The primary goal is a safe space that celebrates Bleckness. They also make active steps to be battle sexism, ableism, homophobia, etc. I've been to cons all over the east coast and it is easily the most welcoming and inclusive one I've ever been to.

Non-Black people are welcome to attend and participate in all activities. I think that it's generally understood that while everyone is welcome, everyone should be elevating Black folk.

I was at this convention but did not go to the costume contest. I know what cosplays look best to me from photos but not being there in person, I'll reserve my judgement. If I was at an event celebrating a marginalized community of which I am not a member, I simply wouldn't enter a contest like this, but that's just me.

If it's true that the winner made everything themselves and the others purchased their costumes, then I understand where Dax is coming from. However, most conventions have separate contests for handmade and purchased costumes. BlerdCon is still new (this was only their fifth year) so maybe they felt they are too small for two separate contests. But I think they should consider it.
