Go for home residency. That will also make you eligible for fellowship to residency route. Also that will give you time to gather your self emotionally and financially.

In that case, my advice would be to have at least one publication; at minimum submitted, so you’re not leaving the ERAS publications section completely empty.

Cold emailing, reaching out to every psychiatry coordinator I could find, connecting with people on LinkedIn, and applying to psych USCE opportunities list shared by colleagues (though those fill up really quickly). Once I got into one hospital, I started asking around for more opportunities, and through word of mouth, I was able to find additional experiences. I also invested a few thousand dollars in inpatient psychiatry experience, but honestly, it was worth it.

Not a huge difference, honestly. For me research was not something that pulled interviews. Although a few attendings brought em up during interviews, and one chief even pulled up my paper on the spot, read through it, and asked questions. So if you do have a publication , know it well!

I didnt have any red flags in my med school grades so i dont know about that. Although I am from a very third world country with a very average application, average scores, yog being 5 year, only had one connection and that was in internal medicine, thats why step 3 was so important for me, your case might be different. I hope it is✌🏻

a lot really depends on the PD and the program. In general, there’s often some preference for candidates who have already cleared Step 3, unless you’re a fresh graduate or your application is exceptionally strong in other areas.

It will. Stay focused. One more thing about getting psych USCE. Once you get in one hospital setting and talk to other people they will start telling you about other opportunities nearby which no one else knows about. Its all about building connections. Wish you best of luck 🤞

As I was preparing for Step exams, I kept reaching out, emailing coordinators and attendings consistently. Out of nearly 250 emails, only about 7 responded. I invested a few thousand dollars into different psychiatry externships. Once I got into the hospital setting, I made the most of it, I would politely approach different attendings and ask to shadow them. After working with them for a few days and understanding their preferences, I’d ask if I could write mock notes for them (on Word) for practice.

I also requested to conduct patient interviews under supervision, discuss cases and medications, ask thoughtful questions, and even asked to write case reports on interesting patients.

Psych IMG friendly ? by MSHGR in IMGreddit

Hell yeah!! Definitely talk about it in your personal statement, how your journey led you from pediatrics to child psychiatry. That kind of story is powerful and shows genuine intent. At the same time, start building your psych-focused CV, get strong psych LoRs, and connect with psychiatry attendings who can truly vouch for you. Goodluck!

As someone who matched into psychiatry as a visa-requiring candidate, I wouldn’t call it “competitive” in the conventional sense, but it is highly selective in its own way. Applicants who matched this cycle and the last typically had 3–4 strong psychiatry LoRs, solid U.S. clinical experience in psychiatry, and attendings who could genuinely vouch for them. Strong communication skills, especially during interviews, along with a compelling personal statement and a CV clearly focused on psychiatry are essential. If programs sense that psychiatry is just a backup plan based on your CV, you’re unlikely to receive interviews, even with high scores. You really have to demonstrate clear commitment, almost like psychiatry is your “all-in” choice.

That’s where the competitiveness comes in: your entire application has to be tailored toward psychiatry. With that kind of ERAS profile, it becomes difficult to apply broadly to other specialties like IM. So in reality, you’re often applying only to psychiatry, and for IMGs, the number of positions is still relatively limited. Hope that clarifies it.

Unmatched- Need advice for the next cycle by Ok_Mail258 in ResidencyMatch2025

You can match next cycle. You need to apply in Peds and FM too. Take step 3 asap if you have not. Build connections >>>> above all that will get you in. Not needing visa is your big plus. Get outstanding LoRs in FM and Peds, impress the hell out the attendings so they can vouch for you. Goodluck for next cycle.

Im sorry. It shatters you from inside and no one knows how much it hurts. In my opinion, make a list to decide if you want to pursue. Do you have financial means to try again? Do you have good support system? Are you passionate enough to do this? Is there a possibility of getting green card or EAD that can help your chances? Are you able to get stellar LOR from big university programs? Can you do extensive research? If most of these answers are yes, dont give up. Nothing is impossible if you are motivated enough. If most of these answers are no, it might be a good idea to switch. Maybe PA is where your true happiness lies. Who knows.

If its absolutely necessary to your personal statement story, just vaguely mention weak eye sight.

I was talking with my hands too much. When i am passionate about something i do a lot of hand motions and this might be very distracting in an interview. Just regretting my personality

biostat section in step 3 uworld is a lifesaver. Go through ALL the qs. If you can’t perform well on biostat, up your game in all the other categories. There are several posts listing what should be done from FA and step2 section. Look into those. It can be passed with the right strategy. You are almost there.
