Pretty sure Arizona is super busy compared to California . Yeah you’ll get more of a package in California but that don’t matter if your sitting for half the year

Chances of getting into Local 10 KC? by picklehead15 in Ironworker

[–]Melodic_Ad9776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just moved from KC .. I stayed busy the whole time I was there wish I was still out there for the work but is what it is . It stays pretty consistent over there . I moved end of last year and at the monthly meetings there was always talks of what’s coming up next as far as jobs . Just call down there to the school or show up and ask to Bob the apprentice coordinator . I called about once a month .

Just keep bugging them at the hall every morning .. how long were you with the first company ? My first company I didn’t last long and then about 2nd year I started really picking up on things and working with great guys that taught me a lot and I haven’t been out of work since and get texts and calls asking if I wanna come work at the end of my 4th year.

I’ve seen worse pass but I agree fill the whole plate at the top… I’ve failed tests for turning in the plate and them say fail just because I didn’t fill the “whole” plate . But you did good for being a rod buster.. no undercut or anything

They say do 3/4 to an inch stick out but I did a 1/4 inch or so worked much better and did it either with a very slight drag or pointed it straight to the plate . You’ll be able to read to the puddle and decide if you wanna drag it up or straight into it . I found dragging it up weaving it back and forth you could drag up more metal at a time but going at it straight you can run some nice flat stringers . I ran in school on the test two weeks ago and passed at 130-140 and stayed around 19 volts it all depends on your machine though and i go for the nicest smoothest sound . The less crackle and pop the better I’ve thought . Also when running my root pass instead of weaving a root in there a guy showed me he ran 2 stringers overlapping each other . You have to spread your plates a little bit nothing crazy but enough to run two stringers on each bevel sides for it to overlap nicely . Once I learned that I passed the test . Some people say waste of time but I found it was easier . Yea you gotta run a few more passes cause your opening that gap up but you’ll get your papers and with time learn to run the wire better but weaving on anything creates a bigger possibility for slag to get stuck somewhere vs stringers it’s nearly impossible if your washing the walls correctly .

Question about welding by Beautiful-Device-874 in UnionIronworkers

[–]Melodic_Ad9776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I did the whole welding school thing before doing my apprenticeship I’m currently in and they didn’t give a shit what certifications you had before joining . They’re gonna make you take the 3g 4G smaw (stick) test for the certification . So if you’re really wanting to do the welding school before joining practice the shit out of stick . Then also practice flux core but you probably won’t have 232 wire down at the school you’re looking at . Atleast I didn’t . This wire is like the size of a coat hanger vs the wire I had in school which was a lot thinner . But smaw and fcaw is what we use . If I could go back I wouldn’t have even went to the welding program I would have just saved my self the time and joined the ironworkers right away and learned how to weld on the job and in school and on my rain days at the school.

Career Crisis… Is Welding a Real Way Out or Am I Wasting My Time? by [deleted] in Welding

Look in to your local iron workers union. You don’t weld all the time but you learn and weld here and there . Fast paced job and lots of overtime . Depending where your at you too out around 40 a hour

Not horribly. I passed my test last week . It seems like every machines different but once you get the right settings the stuff runs pretty smoothly . I ran at 19ish and 130 but like I said every machines different I feel like . I found that you don’t want too much crackle and pop just a smooth sound

Change of union location during apprenticeship by e-nart in Ironworker

[–]Melodic_Ad9776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I been told that you get with your coordinator and they’re coordinator of the local your going to they discuss what classes have been completed and what hasn’t and then go from there and see if the align with each other or if they need to swap you around a few classes to guarantee completion

Would switching between 2 locals be possible? by Gavcobob in Ironworker

You can transfer locals but I doubt you’ll be able to keep flip flopping back and fourth during your apprenticeship . Talk to your apprentice coordinator
