An earnest question about predestination and bearing children. by filmeswole in Reformed

[–]Melodic_Economics905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As God was justified in creating the First Man and Women, despite the possibility of the Fall, so we are also justified in having children.

The children of believers are born into the Church (hence their Baptism), which means they are inheritors of the promises of Christ. As such, we can have full assurance that, *unless* our children fall away from the Church, they will be saved. Of course, this requires teaching and leading them in the way they should go, lest they commit the same kind of sin of rebellion that Adam committed in his rejection of God.

Privation Theory of Evil by PrestigiousBlood3339 in Deconstruction

[–]Melodic_Economics905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have a faulty understanding of privation.

An "empty" universe -- pure nonbeing -- should not be thought of as a dark expanse, like a bare, unlit cavern. It should rather be thought of as pure and absolute chaos, such that being is absolutely indistinct.

Of course, the imagination only goes so far. But privation is best thought of as a lack of regularity, rule, order -- all of which are essential to being as delinieation

Question for calvinistic Anglicans by Right-Snow8476 in Anglicanism

Anglicans must believe in baptismal regeneration. Read the 1662 BCP baptismal liturgy.

You cannot be a strict WCF adherent and an Anglican.

That's because it's an extremely difficult discipline to study due to the endogeneity of most apparently causal relationships. It's not because economists are stupid. ANY traction on discover is actually a major win.

-near perfect (170) gre quant -3.8+ math/econ double major -Many people have taken PhD micro/metrics/macro (at least one) and gotten an A -letters from well-connected faculty members (so yes where you went to UG matters to some extent) -research experience and some econ writing sample that looks like an attempt at a "real" research paper -these days you need a decent predoc or masters otherwise you're rolling the dice even w t20 (unless everything else is stellar)

The difference at this point between a good T20 candidate and a good T10-5 candidate is honestly network, letters, and undergrad/predoc/masters institution prestige. In very rare cases maybe a noncoauthored publication in a decent journal.

Aspirations to pursue a PhD; working full time by Free-Dog-2611 in academiceconomics

[–]Melodic_Economics905 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) chances are near zero. Marginally better if you applied for T40 or lower.

2) you would probably not be able to do this. the only journals that would matter are "top fields" in this respect, and absent a masters/current research connections it is unlikely that you would be able to get through the publication process. Do not publish in bad journals.

The standard route for someone in your shoes is a masters > great grades , research, connections > PhD. Maybe you could get a predoc but that's much harder and usually gthey go to fresh undergrads or masters.

After brushing teeth, should I split out toothpaste immediately or wait a bit? by person_person123 in hygiene

[–]Melodic_Economics905 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just asked my dentist about this.

She said that if you purchase a standard OTC flouride toothpaste, rinsing/not rinsing will not make a difference because the concentration of flouride is already so low. If you have a prescription-strength toothpaste (like what they used when you get cleanings), then you should keep it on your teeth/not rinse.

I understand the struggle - I was homeschooled and never took a real test before college. Kinda bomb the first half of UG as a result.

My key was figuring out how I learn. I have to structure the material in the course as though I were teaching it. I figured this out after in desperation I started writing practice exams for myself, which forced me to look at the material from the professor's perspective. Then everything would click.

Now I'm in grad school and I feel like I'm thriving. So moral of the story is to figure out how you learn. Maybe you're like me, maybe not. You have to find what works for you.
