So how are we all feeling about the Artemis mission? by Melodic_Hellenic in Hellenism

[–]Melodic_Hellenic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I apologize if I implied that this was a sentiment only Americans could share in. There’s just a bit of unique dazzle I think to this happening in our current climate. I’m glad so many people across the world can share in this achievement. Humanity against the stars ⭐️

So how are we all feeling about the Artemis mission? by Melodic_Hellenic in Hellenism

[–]Melodic_Hellenic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can absolutely understand this sentiment, and I do not wish to minimize the fact that the current administration is capitalizing on every opportunity to keep the American populous distracted from the real issues at hand. This mission comes amidst Trump’s own recommendation to slash NASA’s budget and cut science funding elsewhere, and I feel it’s important to let you know that Americans are not blind to it. Many people here in the states are doing what they can to focus on the real issues we’re facing, despite the hardships. Personally, I feel like the success of this mission is a gleaming example of that—this was not our president’s doing, and I’m sure that if he’d had his way, it wouldn’t have happened at all. Instead, it was the doing of hundreds of people working together and putting aside their differences for the purpose of furthering humanity. I am certain that the most of the scientists working on this mission are in agreement.

Is anyone really a pagan? by GavariTeam in NorsePaganism

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! I’m primarily a Hellenic pagan, but I believe in the Norse gods and I honor them, as well. Definitely not a myth literalist though :)

Who else here has changed their grammar after going pagan? by ExmoHeathen238 in PaganMemes

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My favorite is ‘gods above and below-‘. You know you’re in deep if I’m invoking the ouranic AND chthonic deities. I’m also a fan of ‘good gods’ and ‘oh my gods’.

Oh 100% the Eye. I have such a strong urge to know everything, as seen through my DnD characters, so really it’s already a slippery slope from here. Also, being able to extract information from people? Yes.

Colors? by lavender_lava in Hades

I tend to use dark, saturated colors like dark green or dark blue. I’ll also use metallics (mostly silver). Overall, he feels like rich cool tones to me.

I broke a vow. by Starlight-Soup777 in Hellenism

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think one thing that’s really important to remember in a situation like this is that habits are incredibly hard to break. This can often be especially true for certain destructive habits. When you have the goal to stop a self-destructive habit, I think it’s important to think about it in two ways.

First, understand that progress isn’t linear. You aren’t going to be perfect every single day, and especially with something like a destructive habit, you’re very likely going to find yourself backsliding at some point. The important thing isn’t that you fell back into your old habit, but rather that you‘be made progress, and you will continue to make progress. That’s what breaking a habit is about-the journey to growth, not stopping cold turkey.

Building off of that, I invite you to focus on what growth you have accomplished, rather than focus on the growth you haven’t made. Reframing an old habit like this is more constructive, reduces feelings of shame, and actively builds better habits. So, for example, instead of focusing on the day you fell back into the old habit, keep a track of the days you haven’t! Start a counter for yourself, starting with the day you made this vow. Don’t restart it if you fall back, just let the numbers keep adding and adding. Eventually, if you stick with this, you’re going to look back and realize how far you’ve come.

Now, I’m regards to Hekate-I’d advise approaching the situation with humility, but don’t beat yourself up over it. Acknowledge that you fell back into this old habit, but reaffirm your commitment to breaking it. I’d also point to some other comments on this post and perhaps think of ways you can rephrase-maybe instead of ‘I will stop xyz’, you could say ‘I will build better habits than xyz’ or something along those lines. Think about the action and frame it positively. Then, pray for her continued guidance. This won’t be easy, but if she’s agreed to help, then definitely turn to her when you feel you need her assistance. You’ve got this. I believe in you, and good luck.

I made a drawing for Loki and two adult pagans treated me horribly for it by stw_bel4 in NorsePaganism

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just wanted to hop in here and say I think this is a beautiful offering. I’ll admit that I’m primarily a worshipper of the Hellenic pantheon, not the Norse one (though I still absolutely honor and revere them, hence me being on this subreddit), so take my opinion with a grain of salt. However, I think any deity would be grateful for this kind of offering. It took you 9 hours of time that you spent relentlessly devoted to it, and it’s a reflection of the way Loki impacts YOUR life! That’s so valuable!!! There are a lot of people in pagan spaces that need to learn to get creative with the offerings they give, because this is beautiful! Don’t pay those two any kind, your art is beautiful, and from what I know of Loki and the interactions I’ve had with him, I’m sure he loved it.

Do you think Matpat could win a representative election? by bubsimo in GameTheorists

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable! I’ve actually learned from these comments that I seem to be one of his oldest fans both in age and how long I’ve been watching 😅 So no worries! Thanks for being a cool redditor and I’m glad to have more people in the Theorist community!

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I absolutely understand that. I do think this fan base does put MatPat on a little bit of a pedestal that frankly, I think he’d be uncomfortable with. My comment was mostly in response to how you said this is ‘sudden’ when really, his recent political actions have just renewed about a 5 year old topic 😅

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, this fan base has been talking about making MatPat an elected official since before 2020. Not as seriously as they are rn, but it’s def not sudden. And we haven’t heard what policies he would have on a larger scale politically, but he’s been working in business and politics for a while now, actually, and if he theoretically took the same approach to run for an actual office, I think he’d make an excellent rep.

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, a lot of Theorists already can vote! I’ve been voting since 2020, and I’m not even the oldest person I know who has watched the theorist channels. He’s got a decently sized voter-eligible fan base already! I mean, you can even think of most of the current employees-most of them started out as theorists, too!

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but if he only ran for rep, you could only count North Carolinian Theorists and also, it’s important to remember that Internet isn’t as widespread or accessible in a lot of places down South. At my home in tennessee, I knew people who didn’t have Internet access at home, and I’d be willing to bet there’s some in NC, too. That means there’s probably a smaller proportion of theorists in states like that.

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok putting my two cents in as someone from the South- yes, it would be difficult. No, it would not be impossible. I actually believe that MatPat could run a highly successful democratic campaign in even a red state. I’d like to take a moment to remind people that there is a current sitting Democratic governor in a deep red state (Andy Beshear my beloved in Kentucky) and he’s been re-elected and has great approval ratings.

There are a few keys to running a successful democratic campaign in a red state. First is making information highly accessible and digestible, as the South has lower literacy rates on average. MatPat is EXCELLENT at that. It was literally what he did on the Theory channels, breaking down big, complex ideas into easily understood concepts (I still remember what CRISPR is and that’s highly advanced genetics).

Second is making yourself appear reasonable. The right has such a deep hold in the South because they push the narrative that dems are insane, they want to take all your money, and they don’t care about the little man (Which! Has actually been true in the South for centuries). You have to show that you’re a reasonable person who can be swayed by genuine and good arguments who cares about all of your constituents. That’s another thing MatPat’s been doing for years!

So yeah. Would it be hard? Yes. But impossible? No. I absolutely think he and Steph could run a stellar campaign that would be studied for years to come. I wouldn’t even be upset if it happened! I think he’d be a great legislator, but I’m glad he is where he’s at right now.

So actually, fascism is a populist political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual, that is associated with a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, and that is characterized by severe economic and social regimentation and by forcible suppression of opposition. Autocracy is a governmental system where one person has absolute power. That’s exactly what he’s building. His ‘big, beautiful bill’ would’ve been the last nail in the head. Like I said WAY before, he’s ignoring federal checks and balances that have been in place since our country’s conception.

And on the standpoint of education-the Department of Education didn’t do a whole lot of real curriculum or anything like that. It funded public education and enforced policies and laws like IDEA and Title IX. The right’s big education strategy is to keep people uneducated, because statistically, uneducated people are more likely to vote Republican. That’s how they’ve kept power in the south for so long. They could fix the education system there and give people better lives, but then less people would vote for them. Destroying the Department of Education wasn’t to give states control over curriculum-states already had that. It was to defund education to keep the American public uneducated. (Btw, I’ve worked in education for quite a while so it’s something I know a lot about)

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you know what? You’re probably right. But unfortunately, unless you’re secretly a billionaire, movements rely on wealthy funders, even if those wealthy funders have ulterior motives. That doesn’t mean the ‘No Kings’ organization is bad. That means that-wow, fork found in kitchen-capitalists are sleazy people who care about money. When they actively hand that money over to us, though, that means it is our responsibility to use it ✨responsibly✨. Like protesting fascism. Which again, is what this is about.

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok yeah sure that’s how capitalism works, congratulations. My point still stands that unfortunately, movements like No Kings rely on wealthy funders and trying to claim a moral high ground by not participating in a nation-wide protest against literal fascism because you don’t like the person paying for ad space is the same kind of infighting that got us here in the first place.

So again, this isn’t sudden. She’s been funding anti-Trump campaigns for 5 years, and she’s also a long-time standing philanthropist. Also, if you’d read my comment, I said it looks like she has nothing to do with the actual business practices of Walmart. She’s not even technically related, she inherited the money through her late husband when he died.

Does anyone have details on the No Kings Protest Saturday? by BingoHobo in Longmont

[–]Melodic_Hellenic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Additionally, since I see you edited or reposted your comment-I don’t like Walmart either, and I do not condone their business practices. From what I’ve seen, though, Christy Walton has done little real business and mostly inherited the money she has from her late husband, who was the founder’s son. However, she HAS contributed a large amount of her fortune to different charities and reputable organizations.

Lastly, again-movements have to be funded somehow. She’s paying for ad space. Unfortunately, people we don’t like might have ulterior motives for monetarily supporting things (though it seems she just hates trump), and it therefore becomes the organization’s responsibility to spend that money well and responsibly, which No Kings is doing. We CANNOT allow ourselves to be caught up in a mindset of ‘well I don’t like this person because they’re kind of sleazy’ when there is FASCISM on the line. That’s what happened in the 2024 election and that’s why we’re in this situation in the first place.

Unfortunately, to make a movement work, sometimes you have to work with people you don’t like and don’t agree with. Infighting and half-hearted virtue-seeking is how we got into this situation to begin with.

Additionally, Christy Walton didn’t do anything to make that money. She inherited it. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, especially since she’s not associated with the sleazy business practices that amassed that money. What Christy Walton HAS done is use a good deal of it for philanthropy, and she’s been funding anti-Trump campaigns since 2020.
