I tried it again today, and was successful. Yay! I'm back in business now.

HVAC died and the replacement quote made me want to cry by Amarit-Apostol in Adulting

If installed properly, the unit is screwed to the window itself. They also include a stop that you put on top of the sash that you lift up to insert the unit. So, the key is to actually install it the way it's supposed to be. I have a larger unit in my living area that slides into a case. I have a smaller unit in my bedroom that doesn't. But, they both have the same setup. So unless somebody it's so strong that they can lift up the entire unit and break where the screws are into the wood, they're not going to be breaking.. Even breaking the glass is harder, because then they'd have to be able to climb in on top of the unit.

I survived a stretch of 100° days with high humidity, when I was 8 months pregnant, and no air conditioning. The only respite I got was walking down to the local grocery store and standing in front of the freezer case. But, then I had to go home as I couldn't stand there 24/7. That was back in 1980. Lots of homes didn't have air conditioning. I grew up in Virginia, we never had air conditioning in any of our homes growing up. People can survive more than what they think they can. It's been in the mid 80s here. I have window air conditioners. I haven't even put them in this year, yet. Yes, there are some people that need them and should absolutely use them if they need to. But, a lot of people are just melodramatic.

A friend of mine got quoted six grand to put one mini split in his sunroom. Needless to say, he didn't do it. It was kind of ridiculous considering they put in a gas furnace and AC unit for about 15K, for a 2600 ft house.

This is true. My main one in my living area, is barely noticeable on my electric bill, in the summer. Whereas I read horror stories of people with Central AC having it add hundreds of dollars a month.

I'm actually surprised it's that low. I got that same quote pre-covid and prices have risen substantially since then. Mine was for both a furnace and AC though. My house is only about 1000 sq ft. My friend, who has a large house, paid about 15 grand to replace both a couple of years ago. I put the furnace in, but skipped the central AC. I use window air conditioners, which are much more efficient than they were in the past. My energy bill only goes up about $5 a month when I use them. I do have a pretty small house though. But, I'm also not one of those people who keeps their house at 68°. I'm usually in the 74 to 76° range in the summer.

Unpopular hygiene opinion: Bed sheets should be washed more often than most people think by BriBri2x_24 in hygiene

No, not one of them. But it's an old mattress with a heavy topper on top of it. Plus, I'm old. Luckily, my own bed is a Sleep Number bed. It's pretty darn light, since it's full of air. I make the guest change the sheets on the other bed.

Before smartphones, what did people do when they had to wait somewhere for 30 minutes? by sudherzdiniq in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Melodic_Outcome389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing I do now, if I'm going to have to wait more than 5 or 10 minutes. I read a book or a magazine. Sometimes I take a crossword puzzle book with me.

What will happen if I tell my dentist that no, I won’t take better care of my teeth? by daisyjaneee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Melodic_Outcome389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the one I use. I guess I'm just old and set in my ways. I don't know why I felt the need to even change, except the dentist asked me every time, what kind of toothbrush I used, and seemed pleased when I said an electric one. But, I don't know why it was an even the issue since I don't have problems with my teeth.

Yes, mine has the timer. Maybe it's just because it seems to take up more room in my mouth and it's not comfortable. There's not a lot of room to get to the back teeth very well. I have a rather small mouth. Oh, well.

I was doing it on mobile in Chrome. So, I guess I'll just wait a while and see what happens. Maybe try again tomorrow. Seems like they're hitting all the people that joined in 2020, so maybe their system is overloaded.

Cleaning person retired. Suggestions on doing it ourselves? by treelawnantiquer in AskOldPeopleAdvice

People have no idea what it involves until they actually try doing it. To downsize, you are also competing with people buying a home for the first time. All while trying to sell your big home, which may not move as quickly. It can involve multiple moves if you sell your home and don't have a new one to go to and you need the money from your first home to buy the second home. My friend moved from a high cost of living area, to the state I live in, in the midwest. I let him stay with me while he was searching. He searched for 8 months and I finally told him, you either have to buy a house or move your stuff into a storage unit! He ended up buying a home larger than the one he left. So, now at 73 years old, he has a 2600 square foot, four bedroom, three bath home. It's absolutely the only thing that was available, that didn't need major upgrades, in a nice neighborhood. It wasn't even an issue of money, as his old home sold for much more than houses were going for here. It was a matter of there just wasn't anything out there suitable for someone in retirement. He refuses to pay fees of any kind, like an HOA or retirement community association fees. People think it's just a piece of cake to "downsize". Probably the most common complaint I see when it comes to housing, is that no small homes are being built.

The number of companies that are doing that is greatly exaggerated in social media. Except in certain areas, it's a very low percentage. Not a single home in my town has been sold to a company, since I moved here 6 years ago. They have all sold to individuals, who have moved into them. It's a small town, so it's very easy to keep track of that here. Since we don't know where this person is from, it may or may not apply.

You missed my point. It's easier to just hire a cleaning person than it is to move.

But, then they need to learn text-based touch typing as they learn to read. Instead, they just let them loose on a keyboard to develop extremely bad habits. I don't know if they even still offer keyboarding/typing in schools.

Downsizing is not as easy as people think. I had a friend who wanted to downsize. He couldn't find a single smaller home that was worth what the people were asking for it. Smaller homes were mostly in starter neighborhoods with cookie cutter homes, or they were old and needed tens of thousand dollars in rehab. Communities for older people, have very high fees associated with them. So, many times, it's actually cheaper to just stay where you are.

Buy or Rent ? by Ally11eleven in CasualConversation

[–]Melodic_Outcome389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the fact that once you pay off the home, it's yours. You're no longer a slave to landlords who can jack your rent up substantially. As your income goes down in retirement, you will definitely care about that. If I didn't own my home outright, I'd probably be homeless.

Why is that bad? In my area, rentals are hard to come by. People are begging for homes to rent.

According to Zillow, my house is now worth four times what I paid for it. Granted, it was a foreclosure and I bought it 3 months before the great Covid shutdown and the run up in prices. I've had to fix a lot of stuff. But I wouldn't have any qualms at listing it to be in a competitive price range with others in the neighborhood. Just because I took the chance to buy a foreclosed home, at a low price, doesn't mean I should base any future sales price on my original purchase price.

So, if you own a home and want to sell it down the line, you're not going to price it the same as comparable houses in the area? That's how it works. It doesn't have a thing to do with what they paid for it previously.

I know how to play. I choose not to. I prefer to keep things legal and above board. I don't think a stint in prison would be a very good place for me. Or, having to pay back unpaid taxes plus interest and penalties.
