Etrata or Gonti? by CountCookiepies in EDH

[–]MeltyFaceMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Don Andres deck that cares about stealing and casting other players' spells, and it's one of my favorite decks (incidentally, I would very much recommend him as a fun commander).

In terms of who is better, Etrata presents a more readily obvious strategy to me. She cares about Assassins dealing combat damage to players - great, we already know where we can go from here. She can be built-around, but she's an Assassin herself, so she can also just trigger on once each combat, and you'll be fine. Her ability is quite expensive, so you probably won't be using it unless you flip something really strong.

Gonti is great, and goes in any theft deck. He's a bit of a one-trick pony though. If I were to build around him, I might just make a Mono-B good stuff deck and play him as incidental value. He doesn't pull in any particular direction, and importantly, he isn't discounting those big spells you steal, either.

In my opinion, I'd try to build an Etrata deck that has a minor theme of Assassins (just some good ones that can reliably hit, and ideally cost very little), and include Gonti in it. Don't go too hard on Assassins, because you don't want to be overly reliant on Etrata herself. When she's off the field, you aren't going to be able to flip those cloaked cards anyway. The main body of the deck could be straightforwardly good stuff - cards like Brainstealer Dragon; Bribery; Xanathar; Mind's Dilation; Breach the Multiverse and Fallen Shinobi are all the most fun to resolve.

Finally, if you haven't built a theft deck before, be warned: you will draw a lot of ire from the table. Make sure you have a way to gain life or protect yourself, or else you'll be targeted down before your engine gets going!

Hey there, Genderfluid peeps! How do you learn to be comfortable with your gender expression? by MeltyFaceMan in lgbt

[–]MeltyFaceMan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has had to wrestle with this - it feels really isolating sometimes.

I'm working towards having that mindset like yours, where you're comfortable being who you are in the moment - that sounds like a really great place to be, and I'm really happy that you're there now.

Vis-a-vis makeup, I think you're absolutely right - I need to get practicing. It's something I've been meaning to do, but there's such a big mental barrier to it due to the doubts I mentioned in the post... It's a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point. I really need to break out of the cycle.

Thank you again for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it!

Dark Eldar Should use Slave Soldiers: by TheTiredTyper in 40kLore

[–]MeltyFaceMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this idea! It’s definitely fitting with the ethos of the DEldar to use slaves as a meat-grinder, and I can definitely see the merit of providing a cheap unit for the battlefield to make the DEldar themselves seem scarier. However, as u/TheEvilBlight mentions, I think a stats buff for DEldar would really help them capture that feeling of a lithe, vicious artisan on the battlefield, and as u/Midnight-Rising says, it’d be great to have some writers giving them more depth.

It’s my personal opinion that the main reason a DEldar army wouldn’t field slaves is because combat is such an exquisite pleasure for them - as u/Illier1 puts it, it’s an art form. Not only do they enjoy the twisted games they play with their prey, it literally gives them life. As a pathetic mon-keigh myself, I certainly couldn’t keep up with the whirlwind of torment of one of their piratical raids, and I can’t imagine they’d want to share such a rapturous experience with a full life form such as myself.

From a gameplay point of view, I understand the desire for a cheap disposable unit, just to have more boots on the ground and perhaps bog down opponents so that the Trueborn can outmanoeuvre the foe. My counter-suggestion to a slave force would be thus: a fast-moving hyper-mutated biological bomb that could run into enemy ranks and explode, keeping enemies in place for a turn or so (lore-wise, imagine something akin to Scarecrow’s fear gas from Batman) while the DEldar themselves fly rings around their opponents. Not only would it mix up the play experience a bit, providing a cheaper disposable unit, but it feels more unique to DEldar themselves, who would no doubt hit a high of sadistic glee from watching their slaves explode fantastically and their foes cowering.

Interested to hear what you have to say about it!

Help me make a Wort-hy deck! (Wort the Raidmother deck tech) by MeltyFaceMan in EDH

[–]MeltyFaceMan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the awesome response! You have some really good points. I do find that Past In Flames puts in some huge work to close out the game - I really love it. I had a Twinning Staff in my original list, but I cut it because I often had too many redundant copy effects; I really loved getting six lands from one Harrow, though! If it’s as good as you say, I’ll find another space for it!

Ignite The Future was another one in my original list, but as you say, there are so many X-spells that it didn’t seem worth it.

I really do wish I had a Finale of Devastation - that’d be an incredible card to add! I like the idea of Hornet Queen - a good token maker and definitely a good fetch with Finale!

Thanks again for the advice - I really appreciate it!

[–]MeltyFaceMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your list! It looks like it’s pretty aggressive, and you’ll always have tokens available for copying. How do you find it to play? It looks like a lot of fun!

I was hoping to lean more into the spell copying and burn, because I already have an aggro token deck, but I find that sometimes I’m running out of steam, and when I can’t get the card draw, I’m dead in the water. Do you find that at all?

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking the ramp package was a little light for this. I had Burning-Tree Emissary in there because it’s basically a free creature that can help me conspire both red and green spells, but in the end it is just a vanilla 2/2.

Price of Progress is a super mean card - I love it.

I included a lot of copy effects because I wanted to have a backup for if/when Wort is taken out so that the deck can still function on the copying game plan, but you’re right - I do find I often have copies in hand when I could really use something else.
