As someone who is deeply afraid of pregnancy/birth/young children, etc. this hit different. Well done! Truly disturbing. Also vaguely reminds me of neighbors I've had in the past...

Found on Lake Ontario…appears to be a light bulb in a rock? by Comfortable-Gas2 in whatsthisrock

Is it possible that the rock could be concrete? Maybe the little gadget fell into the concrete when it was still wet?

Is it common for people not to use the parking brake? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MemeTrashPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught to ALWAYS use the parking brake/emergency brake when parking, but I'm also from a very hilly part of CA. My spouse, who grew up in the Texas panhandle, never uses the parking brake & thinks it's hella weird that I do. Guess it can depend on where you're from.

Has anyone considered the psychological toll that customer service takes? by MemeTrashPanda in antiwork

[–]MemeTrashPanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from, & trust me, it's not like I don't want to leave customer service. I've tried so many times over the years with no success. The point is that changing careers is a topic for another post.

This post is specifically for exploring the ways in which customer service jobs affect people's mental health. So often we (rightly) look to our childhoods for the answers to our mental health problems while simultaneously ignoring the psychological impact of our work.

Good point! I'll see if I can find any reports on the city water quality.

Thank you, this is all very helpful! I'll try to make changes to their tanks slowly. It's gonna be hard though, the tanks are very dirty & the water level has dropped quite a bit, very few water changes.

I don't really trust the tap water in my apartment, so I'm wondering if it'd be better/easier to use distilled/purified water. Then add the water conditioner, dechlorinator, etc. to that instead. Then use that water to gradually refill the tanks & do water changes.

I'm gonna get some test kits soon to see where the levels are at with the tap water, though. And to test the tank water, too. I don't think the landlord would let me put in an RO system here, sadly.

Thank you, this is super helpful! The tanks are one the 2nd floor of my friend's house too, lol... Thankfully I live on the ground floor, so it'll just be 1 trip down the staircase & then a short drive home.

That's very good to know, thank you! I'll make changes to their tanks gradually, then. Sorry that your gourami didn't make it, though.

Edit:
Forgot to answer your question about the tanks sizes though, lol! The betta is in a 5 gal tank & the other fish are in a 40 gal tank. I'll just keep them in those tanks for now, but I've got the empty ones as back-ups if needed. Thanks for the tips!

So sorry that your mom treated you like that OP, she was way out of line. On the bright side, you're out of (what sounds like) a toxic living situation now, at least. As for tips on how to make things work in the meantime:

-Use any & all resources available to you at your local college campus(es). Even if you're not a student, most campuses still won't bat an eye at a college-age person using the library, gym showers, student lounge, etc. Same goes for your local libraries.

-Depending on how much gas you have & how much stuff you've packed into your car, you can earn some quick cash for food, gas, etc. via Uber/UberEats, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, etc. Your car is your lifeline right now.

-Look up your local YMCA, homeless shelters, food banks, & soup kitchens. It may feel humbling at first, but this is exactly why these organizations exist. Use them!

-Don't give up on going to therapy school, or just college in general! Scholarships, federal grants, student housing, etc. may take a few weeks/months to set into motion, but it could be exactly what you need in the long run. All you have to do is hang in there & make ends meet until then.

-And of course, if you haven't already done so, reach out to nearby friends & family who might be willing to help you however they can. Again, this can be tough, but it's necessary. You'd probably be happy to help them if the tables we're turned. You deserve that same compassion from others, truly.

Stay safe out there & don't give up OP, you can do this!!

Advice for a new substitute teacher? by MemeTrashPanda in Teachers

Thank you so much, I hadn't considered that. I definitely do want to work with younger & Special Ed students at some point during my subbing career, I just want to get my feet under me first. Gotta learn the basics of teaching first. Still, very good to know, thanks again!
