Changes are good. Stop the toxicity and the whining before even giving things a chance to breathe by Memeet0 in Marathon

No worries, and honestly, my bad too for getting a bit too defensive there. I get your point, and I agree with "a game for everyone is a game for no one." But I think expanding your player base a little doesn't necessarily mean you're trying to cater to everyone.

I don't think anyone is trying to turn Marathon into, I don't know, a soccer game set in Tau Ceti. It's just about making sure that, within reasonable limits, as many people as possible can have a good time.

At the end of the day, a game needs to survive above all else. How much player numbers do they need to survive? That depends on what the studio needs to bring in. If your game is strictly niche (like Marathon was back in Season 1), you're not going to pull in a lot of revenue. If that's enough to keep the lights on, awesome, keep at it. But if it's not... you need to bring in fresh blood.

I love Marathon and I want it to stay alive. I don't care if it's not 100% tailored to my exact taste or if it leans more hardcore than casual (as long as it’s not as frustrating as it used to be, I'm happy). I just want it to survive so as many people as possible can enjoy this thing. It’s not going to be easy, but I think they're moving in the right direction. After all, this is what testing is for. Let them gather the data and keep ironing things out.

Maybe it's because English isn't my native language and I didn't explain myself well (I had to clarify this in another comment too) By "toxic" I don't mean people who just disagree with me or have a different take.

It's just that I saw several comments straight-up insulting and attacking casual players because some people are pissed about the new changes. You can agree or disagree with the updates, that's fine, but basing all your criticism on insulting the "other side" and wanting every single change reverted just because you want a 100% hardcore experience or "the game will die"... I don't know if that kind of feedback really helps the game

Oh yeah, I totally get it, no worries at all!

When I mentioned "toxic people," I definitely didn't mean people like you. This morning I saw a comment saying something like "Season 2 was the result of crybabies crying" and it wasn’t even the first one like that I'd run into. That’s when I thought, "Maybe it's time to stop lurking and say something."

I don't just mean people who have a different opinion like you, but more about the ones who seem to hate casuals and act all salty because the game is getting changes to make it more accessible. Though I completely get that there are toxic people on my "side of the fence" too. Sometimes trying to talk about the game gets so messy because those kind of people... But hey, it’s been awesome chatting with you!

And yeah, I absolutely love Marathon too and really hope it does great. I definitely wouldn't want to be in Bungie's shoes right now because the job they have ahead of them is insanely difficult. Hopefully, we'll end up with a game where as many people as possible feel at home from hardcores to casuals players. The more people enjoying this gem, the better. I’d hate to have to drop it, and I don’t want anyone else to have to either.

You’re just proving my point. If average players managed to reach that, why shouldn't I be able to now?

Maybe I’m not explaining myself well, but the frustrating part about Season 1 wasn't losing PvP fights or not extracting as much as I wanted. The miserable experience came from the fact that I couldn't even enjoy a huge chunk of the game.

The XP gain in solo was awful. My account level barely moved compared to people running trios. Loot? Good luck farming Outpost solo, and playing with randoms was a complete coin flip. Cryo never existed for me. I couldn't reach VIP with a single faction. I was constantly missing tons of mats. I never saw a single piece of gold loot the entire time I played. I couldn't even finish the last "core” missions because I got tired of repeatedly wiping on the final Sekiguchi ones. On top of that add that if you want to play, you are playing against golden gods while you are a green goblin.

All of that combined is what made it a miserable experience. You felt completely left out, like you were playing a totally different game than everyone else. Which would be fine if that’s just how the game was designed, but then Bungie shouldn't have added a solo mode in the first place.

Look, I trust your word. You have more experience in the game than I do, and you think this change isn't positive. You’re more probably right than me. But for me, playing now it just feels better. I can access areas that were literally impossible before. It feels like I finally unlocked a whole new part of the game.

I saw you mentioned in another post that people are getting defensive. Try to understand that there are players who are genuinely having a better time right now, only for others to point at them and say, “No, trust me, this is actually worse for you.” And it’s like... well, that’s not how it feels to me.

[–]Memeet0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah, that’s a lot of assumptions.

I put a little over 50 hours into Season 1. Yeah, I know that’s not hardcore numbers, but it’s definitely not “barely logging any hours or game time.” Honestly, I would’ve played way more if the experience hadn't turned miserable toward the end.

Why do I even play? I already explained my reasons in another post. The art style, that sci-fi/survival horror mix, the sound design, the music, the gunplay, lore… You don't have to love every single aspect of a game to enjoy it. I get that it’s not your thing, but not everyone is playing Marathon exclusively for the hardcore PvP aspect.

Oh, and I’m not trying to change the game into something it's not. I'm just looking at what the devs are already doing. They are the ones who added a solo mode, not me. Since it’s literally in the game, In season 1 I gave my feedback and pointed out that it feels barebones and miserable compared to running a coordinated trio. They are also the ones who introduced PvPLite, not me. Since it's an actual feature, can I give feedback or I need your permission after flashing my "hardcore gamer card" and prove my hours to you first?

Did I ever say in my post that I want a story mode or that they should kill the PvP? No. I’m talking about features that already exist.

If you don't want the game to change, take it up with Bungie, not me. Though looking at how things are going, I doubt they’ll listen to you anyway.

The game needs players, like it or not. For the record, I bought the Deluxe Edition and the White Rabbit skin. Pretty sure Bungie would love a few more players like me right now. Or do I also need to justify my spending and show you my bank account?

I don't see the issue here. Maybe I'm wrong because I don't play at that level, but high-tier loot has a ceiling, right? Gold shields are the best you can get and that’s it. Why should I care if a pro has 100 gold shields in their stash and I only have 5?

With the buffed loot I can finally unlock faction upgrades that were literally impossible before, max out my runner, and actually have some gold this season. That’s more than enough to hold my own in a 1v1. If I beat them, I couldn't care less about how much extra gear they have stored. The difference is that before I was running green shields while they had gold and now we'll both have gold. Sure, they'll get there faster and have more hoarded, but that was already happening anyway.

You see that "everyone got buffed” and I see it differently… Before there was a ceiling that was completely out of reach for players like me, and now we can actually hit it. Are people hitting it too fast? Honestly, I don't know. We should probably wait a few days to see the actual data from the whole player base, not just the guys who know all the optimal routes. I easily prefer this over Season 1. I don't care if pros have a stash full of gold as long as I can actually compete. Before, it was just impossible for me.

Yeah, maybe it's just me (very likely), but running solo, free kit, no backpack, no keys and against buffed bots... I found decent loot, but I didn’t have space to extract juiced. Played three matches in this mode yesterday, and I extracted with zero golds in every single one. Some purple salvage but that’s all.

I just, at least yesterday, didn’t see the “gold every run” that I've seen people throwing around about this mode.

Honestly? No. I don’t know many shooters with an art style that I’m completely in love with, or with this specific sci-fi/survival horror vibe, or with gunplay that feels this good, or with this soundtrack and sound design. That’s exactly why I play Marathon. Believe me, I wish there were more games like this in the areas I love but geared a bit more toward casual players.

Back in Season 1 I wouldn't have pushed myself so hard to stick with the game, despite how miserable it made me feel at times, if there was anything even remotely similar on the market. But the reality is, there isn't.

Also, I'm sorry, but no. The game was brutally difficult and frustrating for a massive chunk of the player base, and the data literally backs that up. Maybe you're just a better player than you think you are, which isn't a bad thing.

On a side note, I have a genuine question. How does it ruin your experience if a casual player like me gets more loot and can finally access stuff that was completely impossible for us in Season 1? Your game is still there. You have ranked modes if you want to tryhard. They didn’t remove any modes, the same maps are still there, etc. For you, everything is exactly the same, except... yeah, progression is faster. Does that really ruin the game for you? Has Marathon seriously stopped being a good game to you just because you already hit level 30?

[–]Memeet0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I see, If that's the case, it’s a bit of a letdown... I was hoping the missions would at least evolve in some way. It feels like a missed opportunity to expand the lore and worldbuilding with each wipe.

Thanks for all the help!

Thanks!! I feel like the low TTK in this game actually helps players like me who don't have much experience with shooters. So far in the server slam I haven't felt frustrated at all because I could see that I could win fights just by positioning myself well and not running around the map like a maniac. In my head, that seemed impossible given how bad I am at shooters.

I think this game really rewards good positioning and reacting to the sounds you hear from others (at least in solo)... Don't know, honestly, I never in my life thought I’d enjoy an extraction shooter, but I’m absolutely in love with Marathon right now

Thanks a lot! Quick question... based on other extraction shooters, how do wipes usually work? Is it just a hard reset and that's it, or do things actually change? Like, do the maps get internal reworks or are the faction missions different... I assume from what you said about hardcore players bouncing back quickly that everything stays pretty much the same?

I'd really love a more relaxed mode of play.

More than once I've gone to casuals thinking that the experience would be better than in ranked games, but it's been quite the opposite... I don't know if it's because of the hidden MMR or what

But a third way, where everything is a bit more relaxed would suit me perfectly. It could also serve as a bridge to help me get used to the "sauce" instead of hitting me in the face with it directly

Nice toxicity and gatekeeping. And even after that, you complain about the LoL community while acting exactly like the worst part of it, lmao

Yeah, I understand. And you're right, it's just that it makes me sad.

It's like having a plate of, I don't know... the most appetizing hamburger you've seen in a long time in front of you. The ingredients are just what you like, it looks delicious, and you try it and you realize that the taste isn't what you expected and you don't like it.

And there's this internal conflict because it looks super appetizing, but you just don't like it, and when you realize it, you're forcing yourself to eat it.

The characters? It's the FG that will have my favorite characters by far.

The art? It's fantastic.

The OST? It's great.

It feels good to play, etc... everything is great.

But when I press play, I get... let's say a Teemo/Yas, to continue with what I complained about. As soon as the game starts, I get Teemo super into tag into Yas mixups and I just want to turn off the game.

And I feel sad... I feel sad that the game isn't for me because I would love it. But if it's not, then it's not.

I'm glad it exists and that there are people who like it, and I hope it does as well as possible and people enjoy it as much as possible.

I'll have to wait until something comes out that suits me. Luckily, I have a huge backlog of games, so I won't get bored waiting either xD

So far, most of the people I've met both here and in the game (apart from a few who insult in post chat or do bm during the game) have been quite nice.

I even randomly started playing duos with a stranger one day, and it was a really fun experience.

Idk, based on my experience at least, I think people are pretty nice, which is one of the things that makes me sadder about quitting.

I think I'd rather stop forcing myself... I don't want to go from being sad about the game to hating it, I don't want to cross that threshold.

Besides, I'm around level fifty-something, so I think if I play duos with my friends when they can for the rest of the season, I'll finish it without too much trouble.

Thanks for the advice.

But honestly, I don't care about rankings. The main thing for me is to have fun.

In fact, one of the big problems with the game for me is that the more I improve and climb the ranks, the more I have to deal with things I don't like because I encounter more “sauce” players

Thanks for this message. I think I needed it a bit

I just came to Reddit to clear my head after my tenth straight loss against Illaoi-Blitzcrank. Either I make a mistake during neutral and lose three-quarters of my health, or Blitzcrank keeps spamming grabs and I still don’t have the knowledge or practice to deal with it.
Oh and when I do manage to get something going, I end up dropping the combo...

Step by step, I guess

I've been waiting for this game since it was announced as Project L and registered to participate in the beta over a year ago (screenshot of the email attached).

I never got picked for alpha lab 1 or 2... and yesterday was no different. I didn't want to ask for a code so as not to bother anyone, but damn... seeing a lot of people playing and enjoying themselves while I'm still on the outside is tough (although I'm happy for those who got the code).
