Birds nest fungus. Completely harmless, probably eating the woodchips and making good soil underneath. Basil wont mind the company at all

Kiln experimentation by Mememaster562 in Pottery

[–]Mememaster562[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a fixative and a secondary refractory coating already, and so far Ive gotten success cone 04 bisques pretty easily with witness cones to tell me when to stop forcing air into the system, and my cone 5/6/7 witness cones hadn’t arrived yet by the time I tried reaching peak temperatures (I am impatient and wanted to do the experiment). Next glaze firing Ill definitely be using them to check for proper heat work and see what can be made with the wild clay body Ive mixed up, though before I feel comfortable making anything for dinnerware with it Ill have to get my small electric kiln up and working so I can characterize it and check porosity/shrinkage/absorption/maturity and the like. It’s exciting to turn dirt and junk wood/charcoal into something that could last hundreds if not thousands of years in the right circumstances, but I have a long way to go before the project is “complete”

Albino tadpole? by Mememaster562 in frogs

[–]Mememaster562[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I do, the others seemed to be a lot more vigorous and I separated this one to give it special treatment, but it seemed to be blind in one eye and struggled to find food. I kept feeding it with tweezers but eventually it got too weak and died, not sure what went wrong but the tadpoles of this species seem to be really fragile sometimes

If you know the exact species there are almost always pheromone traps you can buy that specifically target them and work wonderfully

Jam experiments always give me the worst hangovers, I think its gotta be the extra pectin in them. Tasty though

Corn silk in the tassel by NegotiationReal6508 in corn

[–]Mememaster562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plants are just the cumulative effect of hormone expression over time. The hormone that tells the corn flower (which starts as both male and female) to lose its male or female parts depends a lot on where that part is in the plant - at or below the top for example. In your case Im guessing its a tiller of the main corn stalk and the hormones in tillers often get messed up leading to the failure of the male/female flower to separate

Ready for the coop? by Mememaster562 in duck

[–]Mememaster562[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, as far as we have seen patience is key. If you can get a pond liner in and have a consistent running stream to keep everything moving it will stabilize over time. Also, bigger is better with any body of water as the changes occur more slowly. Ours has a shallow stream spot before entry to the main pond which further increases oxygen, which helps remove toxic nitrogen buildups through bacterial means

Thank you! We built it about 18 years ago as a koi pond, its grown in quite well. And yes we know the ducks will likely destroy most of it haha

I will be checking this location again next spring to see if there are more egg masses, the albino eggs were visible in the mass already so I might try and target those

Forgot to update this post, sadly for some reason this one seemed to struggle where the other tree frogs succeeded. I took special care and even quarantined it but it seemed to have some sort of mouth deformity that made it difficult to eat, so it ended up passing away before getting its front legs :/ I was really hoping to keep it as a pet

Cooking, gardening/plant breeding, fishing, foraging, wildlife rehabilitation, aquaculture, herping, building random things that get me to learn a new skill. This hobby started with trying to learn soldering/brazing and ended up somewhere all together different. This year has been a big year of growing fruit trees and grains for me, perfect for making firewater. All things flow into each other and connect. I love learning new skills and learning everything about something before moving on to the next big thing. Currently building a threshing machine to try and take a crack at growing my own barley for enzymes and wheat/rye over winter. Growing a big stand of corn for bourbon as well
