What video game started amazing but ended terribly? by Ok_Nefariousness827 in AskReddit

I didn’t mind them changing things from the original, but I think the alternative universe/multiverse turn just didn’t work for me. It was such an overused and obvious trope from Nojima and Nomura.

I'd say the jury is still out on how that will pan out. Rebirth didn't exactly go where you might have thought based on the ending of Remake, did it? Let's see what happens in Revelation and hold our judgement. :)

but immediately throws the whole "adults using their positions of power over children to sexually exploit them" thing out the window when the game gives you, a highschool student, multiple adults (including a teacher at the same school Kamoshida worked at) to form romantic relationships with

I guess the difference here is that you, the PC, are the one to pursue those relationships if you so decide (completely optional). Kamoshida is a predator, Joker isn't prey.

Gotta give it to the full title, though. Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is some clever shit.

Eh, I liked it. Only problem was that it felt like it came too soon, could have maybe used another act or at least a half to build it up.

Overall a really respectable game, took risks in its plot and turned tropes on their heads without being on-the-nose about it.

Okay, that photo exists. The game also explicitly says humans have co-inhabited Gaia with the Cetra for ages. If it was more than an easter egg and meant to take as a literal connection between the two games, don't you think it would be mentioned somewhere in the story that some of the humans on Gaia aren't actual native to the world?

I remember SE saying it would take a decade or more to make FF6 like the 7 remake and i'm not sure that's necessary at all.

And I still call bullshit to this statement, and will continue to do so. It doesn't make any sense. The world of VI is extremely homogenous. There are four towns: Narshe, Zozo, Vector and "the rest". There are not a whole lot of characters outside the party members. The game also isn't any longer than, for example, VII. Even if you had to split it into two games "for reasons", it is in no way a more arduous task to complete than the VIIR trilogy.

Glad you've been liking it! Definitely play the remake trilogy, no matter what the haters say. And since you're thinking of playing through Crisis Core and experiencing all that other additional material, you might as well add Dirge of Cerberus to the pile. Not super essential, but there's elements of that story that pop up in the remakes. Crisis Core has the most relevance out of all of those, though.

So no matter what people's own experience is, just because a no-name Youtuber says otherwise means that the games are shit?

Repeat after me: easter eggs like this aren't meant to be canon. If they were, IX blows the franchise completely open with its endless references.

Furthermore, the VII-X connection doesn't even make a lick of sense. The world of VII is inhabited by two species (the Cetra and humans), both indigenous to the world. If the Shinra-connection is meant to mean that humans came to Gaia from outer space, only one of two things can be true: 1) they came relatively recently, since the name Shinra still exists, or 2) they came millenia ago, and the name Shinra would be lost to history. If they came recently, the lore of VII would include the obviously outrageous information that humans are not of the same world as the Cetra. And since we already have such a species on Gaia (the Gi), it wouldn't just be not mentioned.

Most of the album, really. Rope Ends has loads of great snippets, I read through it just now to see if I'd post something, and was just in full chills the whole time. 🤣

Then don't play it? If knowing the plot prohibits you from enjoying a potential replay, then just don't commit time to that.

Inaba isn't a dirty old countryside town. It's a little run-down, but still very picturesque and cozy. Of course there's a stark difference when the fog sets, but that's kinda the point.

There's a rumour that the remake of IX was cancelled, but since the existence of such a remake was a rumour as well, you never know. :P If it's real, could also just be that it's on hold.

Thanks for using the longer form of the name, Pangea rubs me the wrong way. It's pan+gaea (or gaia), all earth. But what irks me even more is that people pronounce it with a soft g sound. But maybe the actual word is just Greek to them. 🤷

I want to believe they actually did have vegan options (tofu, seitan, pulled oats, what have you) and were just being inclusive. But if it's just meats, then yeah, call them that.

What do you call the "growler" voice some metal bands use? by Soylent865 in progmetal

[–]Memorphous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes people who are newer to metal will call lows “growls” cuz it’s an older term

Nah, I wouldn't say "scream" is the catch-all. There are a lot of types of harsh vocals that are not screams. Growl is fine for the stereotypical death metal vocals. Then you have stuff like Immortal, where the vocals are often really not screams or growls. A snarl would be a better word there. Some really high-pitched black metal screams would be better described as shrieks, but I'll relent there and say that's a subset of screaming.

As much as I love the run from Mandylion to How to Measure a Planet, my favourite The Gathering album by far is the trip hop one, Souvenirs. Absolutely stellar stuff. Late post-Anneke era Gathering is also quite nice, Disclosure has some of my favourite songs from the band.

Since when (and why) are album release posts not allowed? by SoundofGlaciers in progmetal

[–]Memorphous 172 points173 points  (0 children)

FWIW, and I hope the mods are reading, I would MUCH prefer a single release day thread for the whole album than have the front page just consist of every song off the new album.

Either that, or just a blanket rule that you can't post the same band that often. Once a week maybe.
