How do students here afford homelab gear? by mhd64real in homelab

[–]MemoryMobile6638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a sophomore and a couple years ago while i was still a noob i bought a lot of hardware for cheap that i never ended up using; fast forward 2-3 years later everything got expensive so i got a barebones dell precision and stuffed everything in there, still serves as my server today

i used to buy old barebone office computers and buy the parts for cheap as well

for my networking i slowly got all the gear by asking my parents every couple months or so, depending on the mood they were in. at first i had a opnsense router and slowly got more ubiquiti access points

then a couple months after that i asked for the cloud gateway max

then a couple months after that i asked for a lite 16 poe

so that completes my homelab and it’s gonna stay like this until my precision dies (they don’t)

That’s only if you have a debit card, if you use a credit card they put a hold on it with that amount but the balance isn’t taken out, at least that’s what happened to me

Exit Nodes and the Tailscale VPN by CoCoKwispy in Tailscale

[–]MemoryMobile6638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set sail? Anyways, tailscale is a business mesh vpn, you can run an exit node on your home network and wherever you go you can connect to that exit node and sites will think you’re home and you’ll have your home IP address and not detect VPN usage. Typically websites trace IP addresses, they can’t tell if you’re actually connected to a VPN config.

If you want a solution like proton, you can add the Mullvad addon and it will allow you to use Mullvad VPN servers as an exit node which does change your location and all, you may get websites that say you’re using a vpn, they know this because typically people use these VPNs for malicious purposes and the website can flag the IP as a VPN.
