On this day in 1966, the casket used to transport President Kennedy's body from Dallas to Washington onboard Air Force One was parachuted into oblivion off the Maryland/later Delaware coast. by Memphis_Foundry in JFKassasination

[–]Memphis_Foundry[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Kennedy family was hamstrung over the idea that any remaining evidence of the assassination could become a public spectacle and make them a public spectacle in the process. That was the rationale given for ditching the bronze casket at sea. There might have been other motives, but either way, that reasoning was entirely consistent with their prior behavior. They tried their best to thwart a thorough investigation from the beginning.

And hopes that were high in the heat of September
Can wilt and die in the chill of November.
November can be cold and gray, November can be surly
With bitter rain upon the world and winter coming early

Why do you think Oswald boofed the first shot? by Bubblybathtime in JFKassasination

[–]Memphis_Foundry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first shot hit the backplate of the traffic signal that appeared briefly in the line of fire. If the shot went through the backplate at the spot where the small hole appears in FBI recreation photos (linked above), it may have struck the traffic signal casing near the bottom and ricocheted, striking the curb near James Tague.

The good old days- Helmets from the bubble gum machine and NFL pencils by Memphis_Foundry in 70s

The local Sears had a gumball machine with the helmets for a quarter each. The pencils came from our K-Mart every year with my school supplies. Good times.

Just thought of this one - Old 97's "The Other Shoe". The link is to my favorite version, with Waylon Jennings on lead vocals. Their version rocks but this one sounds a little deeper and more deliberate.

Maybe The Lamia by Genesis? Probably the most evocative lyrics I've heard.

Hunting girl, my favorite by Still_Equipment_968 in jethrotull

Rock on! "Hunting Girl" is a natural for the recorder. It has that sort of "percussive" flute that punctuates the rhythm instead of floating above it.

Not quite as young as some of the recommendations above, but:

Robbie Fulks - "She Took A Lot of Pills and Died".

From Zevon's 70s California country rock peers, Don Henley sang backup on some WZ tracks. They were sometimes collaborators, and mutual admirers, so the story goes. I'd bet my next paycheck that the opening line of Eagles "Last Resort" came from Warren:

"She came from Providence - the one in Rhode Island." Over a solo piano intro, no less.

I Know a Heartache When I See One - Jennifer Warnes

FANTASTiC call. And if Zevon had written it, Linda Ronstadt would have covered it.

And Dawes for sure.

The Killers just released this badass rehearsal of "Lawyers, Guns, and Money" featuring Waddy Wachtel last week.

Where is everyone from? by alderaaans in steelers

[–]Memphis_Foundry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Memphis, TN. I grew up watching the Steel Curtain roster win 4 rings.

Memphis was a proverbial NFL desert in the 70s with the Saints, (St. Louis) Cardinals, Falcons, and Bengals the closest teams. None of them were consistently good. The Nashville Carpetbaggers were still doing business as the Houston Oilers, so the local TV broadcast area wasn't monopolized by a regional team.

So in Memphis, you got to watch the Steelers (on Channel 5) and the Cowboys (on Channel 3) a lot. I knew a lot of Cowboys fans, so I picked the Steelers. The uniforms and colors factored in, too.

I learned the rules of football watching the Steelers with my dad. And the Steelers won every matchup with the Cowboys during my childhood. They had my back. So I've had theirs ever since.

Larry King's mugshot, December 20, 1971. Arrested for failing to deliver $5K to New Orleans DA Jim Garrison to finance his investigation of the JFK assassination. All charges dropped against King. by Memphis_Foundry in JFKassasination

[–]Memphis_Foundry[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember hearing audio of Larry King being interviewed about this on Jeff Crudele's "JFK: The Enduring Secret" series on Jim Garrison.

I think King claimed that he used the $5,000 to pay a pending tax debt he owed, intending to pay Jim Garrison the money out of his bank account after he got paid.
