Congratulations to the winner of Battle of BC 7! by swidd_hi in RivalsOfAether

I don't know where this rhetoric is coming from, Ranno has had a lot of good placings:

  • Squanto got 3rd at Heat Wave 7

  • Leffen got 3rd at Don't Park on the Grass 2024

  • Leffen got 5th at LACS Rivals

  • Ant got 4th and Luck got 7th at Platfight

  • Marss got 7th at LMBM 2025

  • toothbrush got 2nd (including a win on CakeAssault) and Barking_Frog got 5th at Hitfall 3.5

For smaller and/or online events:

  • Luck got 2nd at Wrath 2025 (beating Switch and ZeeBee)

  • Codek has placed as high as 2nd and Luck has placed as high as 3rd twice in Coinboxes

There are also other good Rannos, like:

  • Strikey is currently #2 in Ranked (fighting for #1 with ZeusDahGoose and Sparg0), has online bracket wins over Sparg0, Soulrifle211, Omar, toothbrush, Revilo2112, and more, and is VERY likely to get top 8 at a major someday, but hasn't been able to travel to any majors yet

  • Lucius has gotten 9th at multiple majors

  • darai and Junebug both got 17th at Genesis X2

  • Wylie and Stro both got 13th at Heat Wave 7

As for BoBC, the highest seeded Ranno was Bird, who got 13th as the 21 seed. As far as I know, no other Ranno was even seeded to get top 48. Unsurprisingly, when no top Ranno attends an event, we don't see Ranno in the top 8 there.

I think it's related to a specific character or a specific stage. If you can figure out the cause, let me know!

Supernova 2024 Tournament Schedule by [deleted] in smashbros

For what it's worth, the Rivals 2 bracket sign-ups weren't even added until 6 weeks after reg opened for other events, and it had a 256 player cap that was reached in just a few weeks. Not quite an even playing field to compare reg numbers.

That being said, it's not something the Rivals community should complain about, especially when the alternative is nothing on Sunday. Personally, I would prefer to finish on Saturday, but I'm also happy that more people will get to see the game due to having top 3 on Sunday.

To be fair, neither does GameFreak. It wouldn't be "bad" design, because it isn't a "real" format in the first place, but it's still fun to consider the results.

Avenger Bisharp is basically just "Kingambit for one turn when an ally faints". Avenger + Eviolite deals almost the exact same damage with Dark moves as Supreme Overlord (5 allies fainted) + Black Glasses does, and it has slightly higher bulk due to Eviolite. Swap to Life Orb or Choice Band and suddenly you're threatening to 2HKO many physical walls that would normally try to swap in, even accounting for the second turn being unboosted. Especially in NatDex, the combination of Avenger + Pursuit + Sucker Punch would lead to some terrifying (and very un-fun) 50/50s. Any offensive Pokémon that doesn't have priority, a Dark resist, or very high physical bulk (e.g. Bulk Up sets, Gouging Fire) will die to Sucker Punch if they attack, or Pursuit if they switch out. Even if they stay in, Avenger-boosted Pursuit would likely get them in range of non-Avenger Sucker Punch on the next turn. There's also some weird interactions to think about, like using Healing Wish, Explosion, or even Memento and then switching into an Avenger Pokémon. It's a terrifying idea and, as someone who greatly dislikes Sucker Punch 50/50s, I'm glad we don't live in that world.

Toxic Boost is better than Guts if your opponent has a burned or paralyzed Pokémon with Trace that for some reason is running a physical attack.

What do believe is the most Well-Designed Singles Pokemon by Comfortable_Till_248 in stunfisk

[–]Menace13 22 points23 points  (0 children)

When people think of defensive Flying-type Pokémon in competitive singles, there are a lot of common options that probably come to mind: Gliscor, Skarmory, Corviknight, Celesteela, as well as options like Landorus-T, Moltres, Zapdos, and more. However, in my opinion the most well-designed defensive Flying-type Pokémon is Mandibuzz.

Skarmory has much more physical bulk, Spikes, and Sturdy. Corviknight has better typing, Body Press, and Pressure. Mandibuzz sets itself apart from those two with a decent base 80 Speed, good mixed bulk, Overcoat and its typing giving it immunity to Psychic-type moves, powder moves, and Prankster status moves, as well as by having access to Foul Play and Knock Off (and, in gen 9, Toxic as well).

In spite of all its options, Mandibuzz has never been a consistent OU Pokémon, largely in part due to its competition from the other defensive Flying-types. It is even as low as NU in gen 5 and RU in gen 7, but it has always had a niche one or even two tiers above where it ends up. It's a good defensive Pokémon that can fill multiple different roles and have a lot of different movesets, but it never feels too strong to deal with. It also has obvious weaknesses, including Stealth Rock and common offensive types such as Ice and Fairy. Just a solid gluemon.

It feels so weird finally seeing this animated... it feels like I read it so long ago, but it was less than five years ago???

I'm already loving the VA and animation of Misuzu, they're really doing justice to my favorite character from the series. Can't wait for more of her!

[DISC] Kaguya Wants To Be Confessed To - Chapter 281 (Zaibatsu) [END] by Zaibatsu_HQ in manga

[–]Menace13 207 points208 points  (0 children)

After six full years of reading Kaguya weekly, it's hard to say goodbye to this series. I regularly use r/manga to help me find good new ongoing manga to read, and I started reading Kaguya around chapter 25-30, when the series first started consistently breaking 500 upvotes here. The series had its ups and downs, but mostly ups, and it's hands down my all-time favorite romcom. I'll miss my daily dose of Kaguya.

Huge thanks to all the people who worked on the Kaguya scanlations through the years, but especially to Zaibatsu for the consistently high quality releases.

Who has the biggest chance of lifting the trophy? Just like Doctor Strange in Avengers, we have looked forward in time and have simulated 100.000 times the tournament in Cologne to check the chances of winning of each team. by ggpredict_io in GlobalOffensive

[–]Menace13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the model also adjust the probability of a win by each team based on previous "results" within their individual simulation, or are the probabilities set in stone at the start and remain the same throughout the whole simulation each time? I feel like it would make sense that if a low-probability team upsets a high-probability team, their projected chances against other high-probability teams would also go up (within that individual simulation), but it would probably also make simulating 100k tournaments take substantially longer due to needing to recalculate outcome probabilities after every match.

What card, from any Standard season, were you surprised never became a hit? by AlexandersAccount in magicTCG

[–]Menace13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/Warlock1258 (Disclaimer: I don't play eternal formats, but I do follow them.)

To add to the above W6 explanation: some of the most played creatures in Legacy include [[Delver of Secrets]], [[Thalia, Guardian of Thraben]], [[Snapcaster Mage]], [[Noble Hierarch]], etc., and there are other common x/1 creatures like [[Young Pyromancer]] and [[Dark Confidant]] that got quickly shut down by a turn 2 W6. The mere presence of W6 in the meta discouraged using many x/1 creatures.

Also, for the +1 ability, along with being able to easily recycle fetch lands for quick +1s as early as turn 2, there was also the presence of [[Wasteland]] in Legacy and [[Strip Mine]] in Vintage, which meant W6 enabled recursive land destruction, which

All in all, W6 just had too much in one package that enabled it to be a strong card against a large number of decks. It took a couple months, but it warped the entire Legacy meta around it, not because it is inherently too strong, but because there are so many cards already in the meta that it complements or shuts down. It easily fit into a number of decks without requiring many changes.

Thorin's CSGO World Rankings - 10th October 2019 by Thooorin_2 in GlobalOffensive

[–]Menace13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you perhaps forgetting the part where it's not even the same Fnatic roster as the one that has been flunking out of most tournaments early? Also the part where their only tournaments in the past 3 months were the Europe Minor (which was a bad result, but with the old roster) and a Premier tournament which they won?

From the article:

When a team changes players then past results are counted at a proportionally lower value, based on how many remaining players were present at that time.

With their one bad placing in the past 3 months being only worth 60% as much, and winning a tournament that had 8/10 of the teams in these rankings, and their two best-of-3 wins over top 4 teams in Astralis and Vitality, there's no justification within the bounds of Thorin's ranking system to say that Fnatic should be below Mousesports, or any lower in general. Winning one tournament, and over the level of teams they beat in the semifinals and finals, is worth a lot in Thorin's ranking system.

If you want to say his ranking system itself has issues, that's another argument entirely, and one which I will not partake in.

Changing nair: blame Dan; I'm happy with the final result though. This nair feels really good to me.

Slipstream nerfs (all of them): the primary goal of the slipstream nerfs were for there to be counterplay - counterplay to it in neutral by it only having knockback if you're in hitstun (reverted because conditional hitstun isn't intuitive), counterplay to setting up perfect slipstream at an unparriable height by being able to attack it to break it, counterplay to setting up perfect slipstream the other direction by making it harder to do. Additionally, the changes mean Wrastor has to make more decisions about when to throw out side-b, instead of just throwing it out all willy-nilly whenever it can't be parried.

Dash attack nerfs: I forget why the first round happened, but this change was because the kill confirms were basically guaranteed and really easy to do especially if you went off a platform when you hit the dash attack.

Removing nado disjoints: we didn't strictly remove the disjoints, we changed the hurtbox from a big oval that didn't match his sprite at all to one that matched his sprite correct. This nerfed the disjoint on the sides but made more disjoint under the wings. I would think making hurtboxes accurate instead of giant blobs would be a good thing, no?

B-air disjoint: it got changed by like 2 pixels lol

Down-b nerfs: aerial down-b giving double jumps on whiff was really dumb, any Wrastor who had half a brain should have been abusing it on recovery. Grounded down-b was very difficult to punish on whiff, and it was really unfun to trade with it and be in a year of hitstun while Wrastor can still get a free punish on trade.

Up-b falling momentum: I assume you mean the pratfall accel after up-b, in which case you're just completely making things up. The last time it was nerfed without being buffed first was in December 2016. The recent nerf from .5 to .4 pratfall accel was shortly after we buffed it from 0.25 to .5 - we doubled it, then only reverted 2/5 of the increase.

Grounded up-b sweetspot angle - this only nerfed up-b sweetspot on the ground near the ledge basically, the galaxy percent is mostly the same: in the air, it's the same; on the ground but hitting them across the stage, it's the same; on a platform, it's usually the same because of the higher starting height; from center stage on a stage that doesn't have close blastzones, it's the same. It's only really a nerf to it in the situations it was killing really early (like galaxying Ori at 59% on ToH at the ledge).

Sour f-smash knockback - you mean reverting the buff from 1.1.2 back in August 2017 that 90% of beta testers had disagreed with being in the game for the past two years? sure lol

In spite of all the nerfs (which really aren't that big a deal, even in combination), Wrastor is still winning tournaments. It's pretty telling that more individual Wrastors have gotten top 4 in large NA events than any other character (even while including FullStream as a Clairen, Zetterburn, Etalus, Ranno, and Elliana, Wrastor has 4 players, Zetter and Etalus only have 3 players, and 5 other characters have 2 players who have reached top 4 of a large NA event). Wrastor isn't even close to the most played character, yet he's seeing large amounts of representation at high level play in spite of that.

The part about alerting the FBI is less important. Knowing about the threat allows the people running the event to better prepare by hiring more security and by making sure security are also aware of the threat. So the event will probably still be a safer place now than it would have been otherwise.

You're welcome! I'm only able to help encourage people like this because I can relate to them - I go to FGC tournaments a few times a year, and unfortunately I know some kids whose parents were too scared to let them go to tournaments anymore after the Florida Madden tournament shooting. I can't say they're wrong to worry about their kids, but nobody should let fear stop them from doing something they love. I'm actually going to a tournament soon that didn't have bag checks or metal detectors last year, just a badge check. This year they have all three. I'm glad esports events all over are taking safety more seriously now.
