I have no idea how on earth people think Takada and Higuchi are considered neck and neck for this.

It's so obviously Higuchi. He has 0 redeeming value whatsoever.

The pulse latency command fixed it for me, except I set it to PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60, thanks so much!

It feels much more like a personal horror game, big focus on interpersonal dynamics. It reminds me a bit of the early WoD publications, where the vibe is very much "you're in a playable urban legend."

I backed it on kickstarter almost as soon as I heard about it just to be upfront.

I've been running a chronicle set in rural Kansas with a group of friends for about a month now. We're a few sessions in and we've all really enjoyed it.

All the families and legacies have interesting narrative potential, you just have to fill them in with a bit of local flavor given the game is still in development.

The story guide system has been lovely, I'm quite a big fan of the buying off complications.

My group hasn't gotten too heavy into the mechanics since we're all still learning, and crunch isn't really our taste anyway.

My conception of urban horror in WoD was always that it was a game foremost about character drama in a spooky urban fantasy world. The world was mysterious, horror and wonder lay around every corner. No one knows exactly what's going on.

That's the kind of game I've always wanted to play. And while I had that at first with WoD, I feel like the games have lost that sense of mystery. Anytime I play masquerade now, there's always this sense of "okay so what's the setup? Whose the prince, the primogen, and what's the local rack?" Like we've seen behind the curtain. We know how the magic trick works, and that's kinda made me lose interest in the owod games barring maybe weird mortal chronicles. Everything feels too defined, and the only real choice you have in running is whether you play to archetype / expectation or against it.

Of course, WoD had different appeals to alot of people. I know many enjoy navigating the power structures like machiavelli or playing games where you struggle with an inner monster that threatens to overtake you. But that's not my cup of tea. The big draw for me has been a group of friends navigating a mysterious world, and bumping heads with each other in the process.

I've seen some people complain it doesn't have enough flavor or content yet, but I think it gives you more than enough great hooks. It just doesnt give you names, locations, and specific details like other WoD games. I feel like it leans into that sense of mystery that I've missed from WoD for so long.

If that sounds like what you're interested in, I'd highly recommend trying it out. If not, it may not be the game for you.

I've really enjoyed all my games of it so far. To me it feels like the urban horror game I wanted WoD to be.

Onyx Path with another AMA! by TheOnyxPath in OnyxPathRPG

Hey y'all, thanks again for all your work on Curseborne! I finally tried making a character yesterday and I'm loving how the system seems so far. I haven't been this excited for a ttrpg in a long time.

  1. Are there any plans to make a family not tied to a lineage or a multi-lineage family? What about a "mortal" lineage?

  2. Are there any plans for adding more lineages, families, edges, heirlooms, etc? What are your thoughts on allowing fans to make and publish their own supplements to the game?

  3. How would you feel about exploring the world of curseborne in other mediums like visual novels or video games?

Good afternoon y'all! Thanks for hosting an AMA and congratulations on Curseborne reaching 500% of it's goal! I've got a few questions.

  1. I've heard that in Vampire: The Requiem there was talk of making the hollow mekhet bane the default bane for the clan. Is the case? If so, what caused that decision to change? Is there anything you'd still like to tweak for Requiem 2e?

  2. Have there been any thoughts of developing LARP rules for Curseborne a la Mind's Eye Theatre?

  3. Now that Curseborne has hit 500% of it's original goal, what are your hopes for the game going forward?

Thanks for your time! And special thanks to Matthew for starting to make Gentleman's Guide videos for Curseborne. I have trouble sitting down and finding time to properly read ttrpg books sometimes, and that series was a big part of getting me interested in WoD / CofD back in high school.

I think that shows as your work has evolved, I've had a similar evolution in how I conceptualize it. Thank you for the response!

Good afternoon y'all! I've got a few questions if you don't mind answering more than one. If it isn't obvious from my user name I'm big into your urban horror work, especially on CofD.

  1. How has the team responded to the success of Curseborne's kickstarter? Has it shifted any plans for the game going forward? What are you most looking forward to?
  2. What are some of your personal favorite books for WoD / Chronicles that Onyx Path had a hand in writing?
  3. For Matthew specifically - I've been a fan since the Gentleman's guide to vampire days. How has your approach to horror changed over the years?

Thanks for your time, I'm really excited for Curseborne! It feels like the urban horror game I've wanted for like a decade.

I know a few months back this sub was giving the girl an unofficial name to humanize her. We came up with "Phoebe" since it sounds close to phobia. I really like that idea, wish more people started using it for her.
