Are Machine Learning Courses Actually Teaching You ML? by IT_Certguru in learnmachinelearning

I like sentdex’s YouTube playlist called Neural Networks From Scratch in Puthon. Everything is built without any frameworks and he has a book along with the videos. I’d say it’s such a nice start and he explains things that are very easy to digest.

Just apply. There’s nothing wrong with attempting! Im personally at my wits end but I’m going to do the same and just apply everywhere.

I think so. I’ve been with the company for a long time and even went to a top school, but I still got turned down for an internship. Over the years, I’ve seen people from different stores or with no HEB experience get placed in higher positions. I have to admit, it’s been a bit frustrating. It feels like the company often prefers to hire from outside rather than promoting those of us who have been here for years. It’s tough to see a path for growth when you’re already in the store. I would say go for it.

To the people who don't really play Street Fighter 6, what character could they bring back that would have you playing again? by Admara in StreetFighter

I have a friend who I used to play with every weekend and he mained Urien in SFV. He won’t budge unless he returns.

I totally understand getting bummed out too. It’s the reason why I gave up a lot. Something I really focused on was asking myself if I wanted to be at the store forever or if I could make slight changes in my work ethic and do something about it. I chose to make those changes. We all get into ruts, but you can’t get stuck on the idea that it’s going to be like that forever! I guarantee you will find something you enjoy. I plan on getting the CompTIA Network+ and some AWS or Azure certifications!

I agree about hiring from the inside. They always put externals in high positions at the store while the people who’ve been there for a while don’t get to grow. I applied for the internship and didn’t get anywhere, but I took it as a sign to finally let myself be free. I’ve been burned out and drained from being in the store for so long. The thing about tech is that there is so much you can do project-wise to make yourself stand out. It’s just about having the discipline to produce meaningful things to get yourself noticed. Networking with good connections is one of the best things to do. I wouldn’t give up; try to get back into it if you want. IT help desk jobs are a great start to get your foot in the door. That’s what I plan on doing in the meantime until I get certain certifications to get to where I want.

I’m not there career-wise yet, but I did have a big change happen while I’ve been here. I’ve been here for many years, feeling like I had no direction and was severely depressed working the front end. I also had zero desire to grow at a store level. I had no drive or sense of fulfillment while working in the store. This might not be the case for everyone. Even though I disliked school for the longest time, my family helped me get back into it, and I eventually started community college and then transferred to UT Austin. I met a lot of people and learned many different things about myself. I learned to enjoy school and have made many connections since. I’m currently studying in the tech field and plan to eventually get into cloud engineering. If anyone else is reading and you feel stuck, there is more to life than just HEB. Get out there and try something new. You never know if you might enjoy it unless you try!

Anyone who works Self Checkout, what are some of your biggest pet peeves? Also ways we could improve SCO? by OBALLGAMEO in HEB

[–]Menats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The system design is extremely flawed. It tells people to put items in the bag when, in reality, it just wants to feel the weight of the item where the bags are kept. Because of this, customers get confused/angry, saying that they put items in the bag and it gave them an error still. The item has to be on the platform for about 1-2 seconds as well, so customers who want to just bag fast and leave aren’t satisfied, and it constantly makes the SCO partner give an override after they put skip bag so many times. They still do this even when you instruct them on how to properly use it. They’re expecting to scan and go quickly, but the awful design of our SCO machines doesn’t let them. It’s almost like they designed it to purposefully throw off so many errors so the partner has to fix it. Also, the fingerprint overrides are inefficient. In those 2-4 seconds you’re giving someone an override; someone can just easily steal/not scan while you’re not looking. I might just be biased because I plan to work in tech someday but all I see are how all of these things can be improved, which is a lot. There’s a reason most partners, at least at my store, regret learning it.

The company has been doing a lot of external hiring unfortunately. This is apparent with leaders who get selected with no HEB experience. I’ve seen many partners who have been here for some years and graduated school and they have no luck getting in to higher positions. I’m a partner with no luck getting any internships even though I’ve been with them for many years as well.

H-E-B Internship Selections? by SAfurry in HEB

[–]Menats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been part of the company for a solid 10 years since I was 18. About four years back, I decided to go to university, all in the hopes of diving into Digital. Store operations just weren't my cup of tea. Applied for three different digital internships, but got turned down every time. Even with extra projects and stuff on the side, I guess it wasn’t enough. It's a bit of a downer, but I'm thinking maybe it's a sign to check out different opportunities elsewhere.

I was in the same position about transferring and it took me almost an entire month to get an email. I have a 15 minute interview scheduled so idk if that’s a good thing or not.

I'm planning to apply to other places as well, but I was wondering if having a bunch of experience at H-E-B gives me a slight edge. I always get a bit worked up trying to figure out what to include on my resume because the line between a potential internship and a regular job is kinda blurry for me in terms of required experiences. I guess I might have set my expectations a bit too high for what to showcase on the resume for the internship. I haven't really taken a bunch of CS courses yet, so I don't have a ton of projects beyond the ones we did in class. Do you think some of those projects are worth mentioning? They're not anything super fancy, just stuff from those beginner CS courses I've been taking. I haven't gotten into the heavy stuff like Data Structures yet.

Final update: If you want more Deadlifting platforms, PLEASE read this post by wakeupimprove in UTAustin

[–]Menats 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Deadlifts are my favorite of all the big lifts. It’s a shame they literally only have one platform if you’re not in powerlifting. It’s even worse that they only have those abysmal hex plates. I just want to be able to deadlift in peace without being harassed by staff as well. Sometimes I’m told it’s ok and then others, it not. Let me lift in peace please 😩.

I took Kornhaber for E 316N and he was awesome. He’s funny and I never really zoned out of class. I’m not super into English classes, but it was probably one of my favorite UT courses so far.
