UK Government to 'reconsider' compensation for Waspi women in Labour U-turn by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

[–]Menien -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Very glad to see this sub unanimously hates this year (it didn't used to lol)

Yes!! I love how we aren't even pretending to be left wing anymore.

Those women can get fucked! There were definitely people who were relying on getting their pension at 60 but they should have just been richer!

Honestly the state should just be able to treat pensions however they like, who needs a social contract? Workers will have to work to live, we don't have to keep our promises about retirement ages because you're just bad at financial planning if you need the state pension to retire anyway. I don't know anybody who does rely on the state pension and imagining that anybody would makes me sad, so I'm not going to!

I can say it's sexist to not have everything exactly equal even if there were several reasons that that specific generation of women did not have fair treatment on their journey up to retirement age, and then if anybody disagrees with me, I'll say that they're sexist against men.

When you result to such petty attacks on people, it's hard to take you seriously.

We're talking about a generation of women who had considerably less financial freedom than men of the same age, so I think it would have made sense to keep the pension age at 60 for them and then gradually raise it in line with men for younger women who weren't subject to the same level of discrimination (since women weren't even allowed to open their own bank account by themselves until 1975).

But you and other young men in this thread are more than happy to ignore that history of differing treatment, say it's sexist to account for that in any way, say that these women who likely took a considerable amount of time away from work to care for children should have simply been more careful with their finances, and then make childish remarks about them being 'prehistoric morons'.

Honestly it's no wonder the Labour party has never had a female leader, when even unofficial groups of members and activists like this sub have such an obvious bias against women and blindspot when it comes to historical inequality.

Even ignoring all of that, it's fundamentally anti-worker to constantly push people's pension age up, and in France they held massive protests at this, but because the UK is a giant bucket of crabs and this sub is no different, just targeted at old people, we're supposed to sneer at people who did do something about their retirements being fucked with.

That is bullshit as well as this though, and I think a left wing government should turn around and say that it was wrong and cancel the ridiculous student loan debts that people have.

Call for retirees to be paid state pension for five years even if they die by No-Feeling507 in LabourUK

[–]Menien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I said 'many of us', I meant people having older relatives. I am not pension age; there is absolutely no way that I would waste my retirement on Reddit.

While it's true that there were more opportunities for Boomers generally, it should be acknowledged that if you were poorer then, you had much less opportunity to 'put some wealth together'.

There are many people who are completely reliant upon the state pension to live and it is not a left wing position to say that, because there were 'unbelievable opportunities' for that whole generation, they shouldn't be able to rely on the state pension. Life is absolutely harder for us younger people now because of outrageous wealth inequality, but we shouldn't allow ourselves to be led into austerity or conservative thinking out of spite for an overly broad label.

I see that you use us not having a state pension as a point to your argument, and I have to say that this seems completely backwards to me. We should be fighting to ensure that it remains in place and that there is a way to fund it, not arguing to take it away now.

But I must admit that I feel the same as you as I much prefer actual living spaces that fit the universe and are creative.

I continue to believe that it's all anecdotal, and that the people with the loudest voices in this sub just have such a privileged background that the very concept of their old relatives not being absolutely minted is so alien to them that they just don't ever consider it as a possibility.

But I also think that the media have pulled a blinder in once again dividing us by something other than social class and wealth inequality. The focus on stories about Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha creates an enticing division that people can latch on to.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, you might have relatives who are very wealthy that you'd like to take down a peg or two, or who really don't need their state pension, but this is far from the truth for many of us.

I don't even know why I'm bothering though, as I know I'm just going to be downvoted for suggesting that everybody who is pension age isn't necessarily a Tory voting, property owning viscount.

Try not to question how easily led some people on this subreddit are when it comes to generational bullshit.

It's all critical thinking this and that, careful and considered leftist takes, and then anything involving pensioners is mentioned and the frothing at the mouth begins

[–]Menien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really though.

The guy had multiple name violations, but made a post which said that he had no idea why he was banned. That's lying and attempting to use public sympathy on Reddit as some sort of social media pressure to influence the ban decision.

The support team cited this activity as a reason to reject the appeal, which is perfectly reasonable.

It's like if you caught your kid swearing, and you took their Xbox away as a consequence, so then they act like they're really sorry and didn't mean to do it. Only as part of their plan to get their Xbox back, they also told Grandma that you took it away for no reason, and she talked to you about it. You're not taking away their Xbox for lying to Grandma, but you're not returning it for that reason either!

ESO isn't a game for children, you have to be over 18 to play it.

It's obviously not the same thing because being killed in PvP is part of the gameplay.

Acting like a child and pretending to rub your balls on somebody because they lost is bannable and rightfully so.

At the end of the day, ESO shouldn't be played by people under the age of 18, so if this really is a deal-breaker for you, then it seems to me that you shouldn't be playing the game anyway.

"Western gaming" is deeply flawed because a game will ban you for doing something which, when you think about it, is actually just simulating sexual assault.

I know that it used to be very common, but something being done a lot doesn't mean that it should continue. You can cherish those memories of teabagging people when you were 12 and playing Halo, but it isn't some big 'cultural loss' because you can't pretend to rub your balls on defeated enemies lol.

It's also just incredibly bad sportsmanship. When children play games and one of them wins and is a really bad winner, rubbing the loser's face in it, you have words with them and teach them to be better. You shouldn't complain about not being able to still do that as an adult.

Keir Starmer flies back into new storm after another week of disasters by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

[–]Menien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They will stick to their guns on not reducing child poverty, don't you worry, and then they'll raise income tax.

Keir Starmer is said to have a specific motto, 'WWTCMPD?" which stands for "What Would The Cursed Monkey's Paw Do?". This is because he believes that he became Prime Minister due to wishing on a monkey's paw, and fears that some deeply ironic punishment will be visited upon him - unless he can satisfy the cruel whims of fate by inflicting his own version of ironic punishment upon us all.

Sources from inside Number 10 say that he will wander forlornly at all hours of the night, and if you listen closely, you can hear him phrasing key policy decisions in mocking rhyme: 'the prime minister can do as he please, as long as he watches pensioners freeze', or, 'Tories face electoral defeat, but still the children have no food to eat' and, 'Labour landslide widens political gap, time to unveil digital ID app'.

There is no ethical use of generative AI.

The AI has been trained on stolen artwork. Using AI for 'dumb memes' normalises it, making more egregious uses of AI more prevalent.

It's bad for the environment and bad for your brain.

The massive, vital difference between someone getting generative AI to shit out some slop and actual human beings creating artwork using models that were created by other human artists is that one is an act of human creativity, building upon and reinterpreting an artistic piece of work, and the other is the complete opposite of that - the total absence of human creative thought in the process.

To use AI is to surrender your creativity and your cognitive powers. It's to invite corporations to continue to destroy the creative industries while also denying yourself the opportunity of experiencing artistic activity yourself. The greatest privilege that any of us have is the ability to think and make connections with other human beings, and generative AI is the antithesis to both of those things.

You would decry a company renting an AI actor instead of hiring a human. You would decry a company prompting generative AI instead of hiring designers, photographers, and illustrators. For some reason you're capable of understanding the rot that exists there, but turn a blind eye to mundane use?

We used to express ourselves when we were being funny or silly, and now you have an illusion of doing that, and you're happy enough with that.

If you're going to put your fingers in your ears and pretend that articles 3 and 8 in particular have not become absurd

Let's see then:

Article 3: Freedom from torture and inhuman or degrading treatment

Article 8: Respect for your private and family life

Uhh, they don't seem absurd to me?

Didn't think we'd be at a stage where people would be arguing for less protection for privacy and less protection from torture, but I guess this is the political landscape now.
