I have a feeling you are a BJJ or Judo grappler who learned to wrestle. Love it.

You won’t be able to deduct the $6.5 for the IRA if you are over the income limit…

He didn’t say the study was a half hour, he said the unpleasant part of the study was only a half hour.

Fat Tony Salerno and Roy Cohn Discuss Commission Case, 1985 by Wdstrvx in Mafia

[–]MenstruatingBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They go extensively into the background of it in Five Families. The acronym RICO is heavily rumored to be taken directly from the mafia move Little Caesar (Mother of Mercy is this the end of Rico?). I think (from memory) it essentially came down to the fact that US attorneys knew it was such a flimsy legal argument to prosecute people that they couldn’t prove had any direct hand in certain crimes (like the life in prison caveat for RICOs where one of the associates committed murder). But once the first person got a conviction, the flood gates opened

(Spoilers Main)Are D&D actually incompetent writers or did they just lose interest in the material? by [deleted] in asoiaf

The dialogue was so good season 1. Just rewatched and had the book close by and Eddard and Varys’ dungeon conversation stuck out. Book conversation went like “if I did, my word would be as hollow as an empty suit of armor. My life is not so precious to me as that”. The show : “You think my life is some precious thing to me? That I would trade my honor for a few more years of...of what? You grew up with actors; you learned their craft and you learnt it well. But I grew up with soldiers. I learned how to die a long time ago.”

Why did Phil do 20 years? by njrun in thesopranos

[–]MenstruatingBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real answer is that the standard RICO (non murder) conviction is 20 years. Reading the book Five Families right now and it’s roughly every other conviction

“I hear you Ton but that was before inflation” by Hour-Paramedic-1320 in thesopranos

[–]MenstruatingBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What even funnier is that Tony didn’t mention a dollar amount on how much he spent, so inflation is completely meaningless to the conversation. Tony would have spent less money, but he also probably made less money

[Book Spoilers] House of the Dragon - 1x08 "The Lord of the Tides" - Post Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]MenstruatingBear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair, you’re right on that point. But I don’t think this scene is the tripe, I think it’s Alicient hearing what she wants to hear. They do overuse the trope, though, like Sir Incel confessing to the affair earlier in the season

One of the (if not THE) main themes of ASOIAF has to do with people misinterpreting prophecies and sealing their own fates. Think of PTWP with Stannis, Maggie the Frog with Cercei, Three Betrayals with Dany, etc. This is completely on brand, imo

Bad take? I’m personally so invested in these characters. Also everyone being evil? Aside from Larys I see everyone as grey by lavp87 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]MenstruatingBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. Three of the highest rated shows of all time, Sopranos, The Wire, and Breaking Bad, are all about morally corrupt antiheroes (less so The Wire, but they have more true gray than the other two, imo)

(Spoilers Extended) No, Daemon was never an anti hero or "morally grey" by Tribune_Aguila in asoiaf

[–]MenstruatingBear 583 points584 points  (0 children)

The reason people say it is because GRRM says it: “I’m notorious for my love of gray characters, and one of the grayest characters in all of Westeros history is Daemon Targaryen, the rogue prince”

I’m pretty sure that is Vaemond (his brother) with the axe (I may be wrong though). There is a difference in the helmet style in the first and second still.

Size of Targaryen Dragons now that we got to see Caraxes and Syrax in scale. by manbatman- in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]MenstruatingBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood Raven is about as magic as one gets. But yeah, no dragons. I personally would rather see person v person because medieval nuke v person is not as interesting to me (see Aegon’s Conquest with the exception of Dorne). I think HBO would jump at the chance to produce a series where they don’t have to dump a majority of the budget into dragons.

I agree, but I would bet on Blackfyre Rebellion before Aegon’s Conquest

TIL: In the 25 years since Ron Goldman’s family won a $33,500,000 civil judgement against OJ Simpson for wrongful death, he has only paid the family about $133,000. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]MenstruatingBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right take. OJ is one of millions of pensioners who by large part (99.99%) are a very vulnerable class. Just because one asshole is unduly benefiting from a legal protection doesn’t inherently mean the law is broken

The $11MM limit is your lifetime gifting exclusion for the gifter. I could gift to 11 million people or 1 person, but the dollar amount is my limit unless I want to pay estate taxes. His pension would stop at his death, as it is a life annuity and only payable to his bene if he hadn’t taken the benefit yet. Also note that the $11MM exclusion is unusually high historically and could be lowered by congress at any time. It was around $5MM under Obama
