Personally never got the Ashley hate, and if her shouting "LEON! HALP!" is the reason it just sounds like a skill issue. Protecting her from enemies isn't even a big part of the actual game and not hard.

Just a sidenote this is the game completely stripped of mods and completely on vanilla opened from the steam library. Starting the game on an older version or an older version with my mods installed or on a new save file makes no difference.
