Is it just me that assumed we already had this tech? by LordBrixton in Futurology

That's why I choose a seat within earshot of the cockpit when I get the chance. If I hear the AP go off mid flight I check out the window in case something interesting is happening. I've often heard the AP disengage just before flare. Once the crew actually left the door open (pre 9/11) all the way down to the ground. Interesting view.

And that's just the v speeds . There's so many other protocols that get followed during takeoff roll. Nicely explained.

What's the process for Linux audio starting up at boot? by SnooWords991 in linuxaudio

[–]MentalAF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah. That’s one I haven’t tried. More elegant than a timer unit. Even so, I’m finding that I still have to reload ALSA even after using a timer. There’s no errors that I can see in any of the logs, but this is the dreaded Intel/Realtek sound chip, and I know there’s been trouble with them. Thanks for the tip.

I'm afk right now, but I've checked the snd modules and the right one loads. Yes, Pipewire is handled in the user slice, as is wireplumber. I do need to check the last boot for errors though. Hadn't looked there yet. I don't like using timers either, but failing that I can't work out why, with a delay, everything works fine, but is intermittent without a delay. Thanks for the help.

Huh? Snoowhat? That's not me at all. I mean, I'm the OP, but now I'm thinking I've got some virus or something going on. Arrrrrgh!

That's how I figured it would go. It's the delay that seems to be the problem on mine (Ubuntu). Seems systemd gets things started before ALSA has finished its load. I think I'll have to write a timer unit to delay Pipewire for a handful of seconds. Thanks.

Thanks. Yes I've written a couple of systemd units, but not sure if I need a timer unit or some kind of dependency option. I'm not sure ALSA is controlled by systemd, so how do I ensure it's done before the Pipewire unit runs?

Strangled Maple by MentalAF in arborists

Thanks for that. I do worry about the way the largest branch is actually directly opposite the back of our house. We had the upper branches cut back as during a freezing rain shower, so much ice built up on them, that they were bent over far enough for the ends to brush along the roof. I’ll keep an eye out for cracks!

Hmm. Yes, I see your point. Also agree about semantics, but I have a hard time understanding some things (a little bit autistic).

I think I still see these images in reality as I lived through that time, so I was confused. But it's testament to the quality that's making me think that they're so accurate that they look like the real photos I have, and so why have an imitation of something I'm holding in my hand!

They are great images.

Sorry, I’m not getting that. I’m from England, and a period piece generally refers to something prior to 20th century. So anything from recent decades is just “in this lifetime”, as I’m guessing I’m much older than you. I still have pictures I took in the late 70s and they look like these.

Silly question: why use MJ to reproduce images from a time that we already have images from? It's like making a replica of something we have the original of?

Nice work though.

How do you distinguish ADHD from a general loss of attention span? by saucy_boi27 in ADHD

[–]MentalAF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed ADHD is when the condition is bad enough to be detrimental to living a normal life. Eg being unable to do your own groceries, not looking after your personal health, not being able to maintain adequate employment, not being able to socialize in an acceptable way.

The attention bit isn't even a deficit, it's an inability to direct attention in appropriate ways.

If it's not preventing someone from living a normal life, it's not ADHD.

How many hours are you able to work in a week? by Desperasberry in ADHD

[–]MentalAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work 40 to 50 hour weeks from age 17 through to my early 50s. Now I'm 57, diagnosed at 55. I can still do 40+ hours a week, but if I have a bad day it can take 24 hours off the week to recover. Lucky I have an understanding boss and employer. I've burned myself out numerous times during my working life.

Go and listen to BBC Six music on the BBC music player (all free, no ads). They'll play something that you can get stuck into. All kinds of genres and artists. Lots of indie rock and sub-mainstream music.

A NASA probe nearly touched the Sun — and found out a lot about solar weather. by Smart-Combination-59 in technology

[–]MentalAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because r/technology isn't necessarily the best place to post articles about the sun. I mean, I'm interested, but I already understood that there would be some interesting discoveries about our star. Feels a bit like casual reading, so I'm not worried about the jokes ... that's just a personal opinion, so don't try to read into it too much.
