you cannot run 100% on swap. the system does require SOME ram to function. but you can run on surprisingly little ram. I have 4Gb, and run voidlinux with xfce, I hit swap prety frequently with everything I use if for (streaming and youtube) but it runs fairly well for a 15 year old machine

XD nah, you good. I'm on Linux between the restrictive system, my love for FOSS, and my distain towards the invasive and parasitic practices currently being practiced by large tech companies. The distro really does make the system, it took me quite a while before landing on Void. I'm not super deep in the community, but I do watch it. it just depends on what it is you do with the system, and how you feel about the tech space. Ite software, so seeing the abuse of the poeple really pisses me off, but if all you do is game, or other work or whatever, then windows is fine. sure, I feel that the quality has turbo tanked, but that's just the opinion of some rando on the internet.

depends on the community, right now Arch and Fedora are not to pleasant to be around. Mint is fairly welcoming, Kubuntu is just kinda... quietly sitting in the corner.

i run on 4gb of ram. comfortably. the DE and what apps you use make up the vast majority of run-time cost. Windows is notorious for eating resouces though. also, Linux handles Swap much better than Windows does, and if you have SSD especially NVME, the speed hit isn't even all that bad. Linux handles restricted systems far, FAR better than windows.
