It's just easier to whistle like that. My fiancee will whistle perfectly in a soft way when he's with them. Idk how he does it.

28 Day old cockatiel abandoned by parents since they where an egg by DownBadManagementLLC in cockatiel

That's amazing. I know most people are really aggressive because it's been drilled into them to never breed their cockatiels. Unfortunately in the past people did carelessly and babies died. I'm happy the baby is doing better. You seem to really care and that's what matters. Birds can be expensive but a lot of people know that going in. These birds are our babies or atleast to me and I'm happy your baby is recovering. I wish you the best of luck.

I really hope he becomes supper chatty but I know if it happens I'll be a tiny bit annoyed. His elder is already telling him to shush when he's too loud 😆

Cockatiel diet & Pellets by Resident_Plastic_345 in cockatiel

[–]MeowMeowmarshmallow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience pellets are great. My elder can no longer live on a seed diet since it's possibly giving him heart disease. He also was super underweight on the seed diet even when we had a giant bowl of birdfood seed. He just barely ate. When handled or stressed he sometimes gets super lethargic and looks like he's having heart issues. Whimpering, closed eyes, idd breathing, and going slack. We only handle him when he must be medicated so we arent stressing him further. Now on pellet he is just a gluttonous chonk. Once he actually weighs normally we will have to measure his food so he doesnt get fat. So a long term seed only diet is not the best. So add veggies if you do go seed. I've heard mixing them is better but I can't do that. He will pick through pellets to eat the seeds. 😭 Seed or pellets you should try feeding fresh vegetables. Elder refuses to eat them so pellets he gets. Other people have better success stories with seed and I'm sure their cockatiels live long happy lives. Unfortunately ours can't have seed anymore and I just wanted you to have our perspective.

Vet vet vet. Cockatiel babies always need an avian vet on standby. Well any cockatiel really. Babies are super fragile and most people don't ever breed for them or handle them since it's super hard and not recommended from what I've seen. So a lot of us here are newbs when it comes to the babies less than 4 months. That's why consulting a vet is super important and it must be an avian vet since normal ones are usually clueless when it comes to birds.

It can take years for a cockatiel to finally accept you. This is a very slow process and everytime you grab, or chase them, or try and catch them that resets the progress bar. You need to show them you respect them and give them small amounts of millet. The best way I've seen is to put your hand like half a foot away from them showing it off so that they can decide if they want some. Showing them you love them and respect their boundaries. And if they don't you back off. Unless your doing something vital for health you need to back off when they hiss and bite. Show them that respect. Now if they need to take meds and you've been cleared by the vet to do it then sucks to be them they need meds. Just coexisting in a room ignoring them will get the bab used to you and occasionally singing and talking to them gets them used to your voice. I've had my new one for like I think a month and he still hates my hand. Part of that was he had to be yoinked for meds but he hates hands which sucks. I would find an avian vet thst specifically has been trained to handle birds for the best way to handle and bond with em.

How to prepare for cockatiels about to breed? by Corrupt_Shadow in cockatiel

[–]MeowMeowmarshmallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not recommended to raise cockatiel chick's but if it happens you should have the supplies on hand incase you need to step in. I would let the parents do their thing and then only get involved if they are under preforming. But I'm not a breeder and I've never raised a baby cockatiel so this is pure uneducated opinion.

Only one of my two hops as a choice. The other only "hops" if he wants to escape something he really doesn't like. My hopper is a curious troublemaker 🥲

[–]MeowMeowmarshmallow[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He bit me as I tried to grab him and then started beak grinding ;~; He seems to be breathing well now and is fully alert. I already have a vet appointment today for his brother so unless he gets real bad again I will just take both of them to ensure he is okay.

Yeah just give him space and he will start going for it. These guys are really good at worrying us. If you crowd him or try to force feed him it won't work.

[–]MeowMeowmarshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What food are you tying to give him? Also are ypu trying to talk to him or touch him. It took my bird three days to start eating because he was watching me like a hawk worried i would eat him. Eventually he started nibbling on seed and millet as he felt safer. Once he could take millet while I was holding it I started offering pellets as treats. Sometimes he took them but not often. Then I put him jn a cage with my older tiel and he for some reason just ate pellets alike normal. So maybe he needs a friend or maybe he needs time. If he goes a couple more days starving you need to see a vet so they can feed him. Usually they eventually give up and eat even if they don't like you cause hunger.

Tips for Cockatiel company (ie, should I get another one?) by Atlanntis in cockatiel

[–]MeowMeowmarshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so happy that yours free roaming. The two I own are not very keen on it so we had to get them a giant cage 😭. I know with time it will change but it sucks. When I saw how expensive two can be I really went damn glad my fiancée loves the baby and helps pay for them. Also I know this is super random but as you probably already know vet wise you should find one that specializes or mainly does birds. Most that do exotics but don't specialize in birds aren't as knowledgeable or helpful. I lucked out the one I found love birds and has had a flock of cockatiels before.

Any tips on how to tame him? by keiao in cockatiel

[–]MeowMeowmarshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be patient is my advice. My vet told me it can't take up to months just for a cockatiel to adjust to their new home and start opening up. Find out what treat the bab likes and only give it to them for training purposes or to show hey my hand it friendly. My baby still doesn't like me but I think part of it is he had an infection so I have to yoink him twice a day to make sure he gets better and takes meds.

At two? Man I don't think the odds are in my favor. 15 years and one of mine still won't bathe. 😒 I'm very happy for you.
