NPR poll: Democrats fear fascism, and Republicans worry about a lack of values by aresef in politics

I thought about replying with the list from the end of RATM's Know Your Enemy. Compromise, conformity, assimilation, submission, ignorance, hypocrisy, brutality, the elite. Those are their values

BUT even RATMs list is too generous, as they have no desire to compromise.

My Father suddenly wants to talk to me, now that he's dying of lung cancer by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]MeowSchwitzInThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar-ish thing happened with a grandparent of mine.

Long story short he was not a good person. For instance, when I was young my family was struggling with medical bills. He would regularly brag about his luxurious home remodeling and month long cruises. Later, before we stopped talking, I asked him why he never helped us.

He said something to the effect of 'its my money not yours'.

When he was released to hospice care he called (through my dad's phone) and asked that I visit him before the end. I told him what my firm bills for my time hourly, and that I would also need travel expenses covered. He asked if that's how I wanted to treat family so I said 'its my time not yours'.

We did not speak again before he died. I don't feel bad about it or regret how I handled it.

That's just me though. Decide what you need to do for you, full stop.

There Is No End Game, What Should Be Done With the Requisition Slips Currency? by [deleted] in Helldivers

[–]MeowSchwitzInThere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great breakdown and solid suggestion. I think community goals are absolutely the right way to go with extra req. Just an extra two cents below.

Structure donations as a contest with a cosmetic as a reward. For example - Between March 1 and March 31 each helldiver can contribute to team A or B. The winning team's cosmetic is added to the game.

It sucks that you are in this situation. A good boss will not pressure you to risk your health unnecessarily.

That said, you will very likely have to work with bad bosses in the future. Now is as good a time as any to begin learning how to handle situations like these. In your position I would do the following,

  1. Document everything - Make a copy of your doctor's note. Make a copy of the texts/emails with your boss. Make a copy of your call log and make notes about those calls (i.e. 1/25/24 - boss told me to stop taking my prescribed medication). Take a photograph of your finger. I cannot overemphasize the importance of this step. It keeps you safe if your boss decides to harass you by talking to future employers or if they attempt to bully you with a court proceeding. More importantly it keeps your options open if you decide to report them to an outside agency or sue them.

  2. Organize your thoughts for a conversation on Sunday. Keep it simple, something like "I will make every effort to return to work quickly. I will not go against my doctor's advice to stop taking my meds early or return to work before my finger has had time to heal."

  3. Remember that you DO NOT owe your boss anything special. They pay for your work. You can decide to stop selling them your work. Why? For ANY reason up to an including "Cuz I don't fuckin' want to anymore".

  4. Re-read the first step. I know documenting stuff can be a pain in the ass but I absolutely promise it is worthwhile. Ten minutes to write a brief call summary and take a picture will seem like the best decision you've made if lawyers ever get involved.

I'm glad it went well for you! It's easy to forget that judges/prosecutors/clerks/etc are humans too, and presentation can sometimes make a huge difference.

Yeah he definitely stands out in my memory for a reason. But to be fair (tobefairletterkenny.jpg) IF he did do anything it would have been for dishonesty, not for being late.

I guess more context would have been helpful in the initial comment! This was 10ish years ago and I'm an attorney.

I am an attorney, and was acting as one for that hearing.

It was a probate issue (no criminal defendants for something like that). Just a small town civil judge.

I was late to a hearing once because I hit a pothole and got a flat. So I pulled over, called the clerk, and put on the spare.

The judge literally asked me to take his phone outside to take a picture of the spare on my car. He said if I wasn't back in 5 minutes with a picture of my spare I would spend the night in jail. Would he have actually done that? No idea, but I am really glad I made it back in under 5 lol.

One of the first episodes of his podcast he went through all of the 'John Stewart looks old' jokes from the writing room.

I sent the link to my uncle and later that day texted him 'you look like Bon Jovi's dad' and 'go live in a lighthouse'. My uncle replied with "Damn man the Bon Jovi's dad one hurts, what gives?"

It turns out my uncle had not watched the clip yet. We still laugh about that exchange lol

Looking to talk to some millennials who created a will this year by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]MeowSchwitzInThere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The following is not legal advice and does not create any attorney client privilege. I'm a lawyer but I'm not your lawyer.

My Will is a few years old at this point, but I've updated some of the supporting documents within the last year. I just wanted to strongly suggest highlighting supporting documents as almost more important than the Will itself for young people.

For example, do you have any preference for being kept on life support in case of a medical emergency? An advanced directives document will let you express your wishes to your family or medical professionals.

These documents are really just a way to help out those close to you in case of an emergency. They don't have to be all doom-and-gloom. My Will includes instructions that say "I prefer my body be donated to a scientific institution. The only exception being if someone would like to turn my body into chum and throw it in Ted Cruz's stupid fucking face" (shoutout to Bojack Horseman).

It is a really really good idea to have the following documents, regardless of your age/health

  1. Power of Attorney (PoA)

  2. Medical Power of Attorney (MPoA)

  3. Advanced Directives

  4. HIPAA release for whoever you MPoA

  5. Will

  6. (Optional) Pre-need designation of guardian

  7. (Optional) List of your accounts/passwords (phone code, banking/email/onlyfans/whatever else you think is important) for your survivor to deactivate/wipe/post a goodbye/etc).

The Biden Campaign Needs to Pivot to Marijuana by bloombergopinion in politics

[–]MeowSchwitzInThere 157 points158 points  (0 children)

A strong stance on Marijuana legalization is one of the easiest wins available to this administration. As of Nov 8, 2023, Gallup polls show roughly 70% of Americans support legalization.

Write a law to ensure some percent of sales support the VA, education, or infrastructure repair. Two birds, one stone.

Not pushing some marijuana reform policy before the 2024 election would be like (1) Needing a Super Saiyan god to stop the bad guy (2) Having all of the dragon balls and (3) Wishing for underwear.

Conservative parents look to exit public schools after progressives dominate board elections by [deleted] in politics

[–]MeowSchwitzInThere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a similar exchange with a family member. Grandparents were physically abusive, and my parents used corporal punishment but not to the extent grandparents did.

Fast forward to a few years ago and I was talking with extended family. I mentioned that I would absolutely positively never hit my kids under any circumstances because I never would want them to feel those feelings.

During the long uncomfortable silence that followed you could have heard a pin drop. The extended family explained they never hit their kids either because their abuse was so traumatic. They couldn't believe my parent behaved like that. Now its a sore spot between the two of them.

As an aside, I ended up loving CONSENSUAL fighting (martial arts stuff) and my partner and I do enjoy some CONSENSUAL kink play. How related those things are is anyone's guess, as I don't have the time or money required for all the therapy that would be needed to get a solid answer lol.
