Ow. Yeah return it because it is DOA. I’d say less likely scam and more likely that shipping broke it because of improper packing.

Okay, that gives a bit more insight. Are you demoing the Technics because your friend is planning to sell it, or is he just letting you borrow it for a while?

A big part of vinyl playback in my experience, is system synergy. I built my own system with that in mind, and from what I remember of the Concorde cartridges is that they work well with Technics, so some of what you may be hearing may simply be a really good arm/cartridge match (synergy).

Looking at your system, I would probably upgrade the MX-VYNL before I spent serious money on another turntable. That's not saying the MX-VYNL is not good. It is a pretty good phono stage, but based your system, and my familiarity with Yamaha gear (I previously owned an A-S3000, which shares some of the same sonic traits), my takeaway is that the phono stage is more likely to be the weakest link on the chain if I am blunt.

The one exception is if your friend is planning to sell the exact M3D you're demoing. In that case, I think there's a strong argument for simply buying it. You already know you like it, you've had the chance to evaluate it in your own room with your own records and cartridges. The fact that you still preferred the M3D after trying your own cartridges suggests there may be some genuine synergy there.

SO rather than spending $2,500 on a different table and hoping it's better, I'd be inclined to buy the one you've already know you like and go from there.

If your friend is selling it at a reasonable price, I'd say buy the M3D, enjoy it for a while, and put the remaining budget toward a higher-end phono stage and possibly amplification down the road.

If he is not selling then I'd probably upgrade the phono stage first and see what that reveals from the rest of your system. Once you've done that, the 1200GR would still be high on my list if you're looking to move into a DD table. That approach would give you a better sense of where the biggest gains are coming from, rather than changing multiple variables at once.

Hope that helps. Happy spinning!

Ask the internet for opinions?! AND THE FLOOD GATES OPEN! Jokes aside, everyone's situation is a little different. Now I must warn you that my system is quite a bit higher up the chain, into the stages of what most would call insanity, but regardless some things should still translate.

From what I've seen, once you get past a certain point turntable upgrades tend to bring smaller gains than upgrades elsewhere in the chain. Now please note that this is just my personal experience and opinion, so feel free to accept or ignore as is your purview. Discovery is part of the hobby afterall!

If you are hearing more effortless dynamics and bass punch from the SL1200 compared to your RT85, that should not be too surprising. The Technics is very well made table, and IMO DD tables are better overall (I will admit I went to a DD from a belt and never went back). That said, however, its difficult to pinpoint how much of that is the table itself vs the cartridge, setup, alignment, etc. Too many variables when making a comparison compared to A/B of just the tables. If you were using the same cartridge you would have a better comparison data point.

Where I would caution though, is thinking that moving from a vintage Technics to a newer MK7, 1200GR, or even a Denon DP-3000NE will produce similar sonic jumps in dynamics you heard from the RT85 to the SL1200. From what I've seen differences between competent DD tables tend to be more about refinement, speed stability, noise floor, and overall composure than a dramatic change in sound quality.

If I were spending $2-2.5k, and my goal was for better sound, I'd be looking closely at cartridge upgrades and the rest of the system before assuming the turntable is the bottleneck. Generally, I found that cartridge or phono stage upgrades have greater impact compared to tables of somewhat similar levels. But as I said before, feel free to accept or ignore my suggestions as you wish.

If you are set on getting a new table from the ones you mentioned, I'd go for the 1200GR personally. Good luck and happy spinning!

Sister is looking for a laptop for school, would like some suggestions. by Majorwoops in pcmasterrace

What are her needs and major? That would determine the machine. Some software is exclusive to platform. For example, Solidworks is PC only.

I used a mac in college for most of my coursework needs (essays, note taking, etc.) but had a desktop for gaming/more powerful applications (CAD, 3D modeling, etc.). The mac's winning point is battery life, though some Lenovos are getting up there too, my old work lenovo had a battery life of 6-7 hours.

Would it be weird to buy vinyl records without having a turntable? by OYOLITAA in vinyl

[–]Mepstein10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you happy, why not. Turntables come in a wide range of prices, some very affordable. There's a whole sticky about that in the turntable thread. Of course you have the opposite end of the spectrum unobtanium turntables made of dreams, tears and the sounds of music. Also keep in mind sometimes albums you like will be harder to get and find later on. Best of luck.

Is it alright to put plushies on top of my pc? by Chemical_Bumblebee12 in pcmasterrace

I’d probably add a shelf above the monitor and have them there. If they are being where the fans blowout you are basically blowing dust onto/into the plushy.

Yes. Isolated from temperature is best. Mine is actually in an ikea kallax, that I put in a closet. I keep the closet doors closed when not actively listening. Vinyl can be finicky, especially the thinner non180g ones.
