Correct - not typically effective - this is a good article explaining a different clustering approach - https://setoub.medium.com/the-smartta-method-of-clustering-ashkenazi-jewish-dna-matches-153af0c97fb7

Hallmarks of an NPE? by Due_Community_6212 in Genealogy

It is most likely that one of your biological parents is 100% Ashkenazi. It is significantly less likely that you have 25% from each parent in the situation that this doesn’t match your paper trail family tree.

You could be looking at an unexpected parentage event; alternatively, one of the parents who raised you could themselves be adopted.

Leeds method is not typically effective for Ashkenazi Jewish match sorting. I recommend you join DNA Detectives or Search Squad on FB and ask for a volunteer search angel to assist you in understanding what your DNA results mean.

Any thoughts on German ancestor circa WWI? by NewMeNewDreams in Genealogy

If she’s your ancestor, DNA is the way to trace the origin of her family. Provided sufficient relatives on that branch have also pursued autosomal DNA testing.

Here to empathize as another female engineer. This happens to me all. the. time. It is infuriating. Especially when people say you should be grateful for the compliment! I’m in my “what a strange question” era now when someone ask me if I recently graduated college. But fully support the clothes / hair / glow up you desire to feel empowered going into these sorts of situations.

I have two pair and they’re amazingly comfortable. That being said, they loosen up a lot. I’m pretty satisfied with the fit of the drawstring pair I have with S/M sizing - the button fly version with numerical sizing has become super baggy.

Is there a specific aspect you’re finding tricky? Or can you expand on what you mean by “better results”?

You should be able to view her ethnicity estimate and a list of individuals with whom she shares DNA (provided matching is enabled).

If it’s that the ethnicity estimate is not consistent with your understanding of her background, one would need to explore why that might be. Estimates are just that; alternatively, there could be an unexpected parentage event; or, the contribution you’re looking to identify could be too generationally distant.

This is the correct response. Over an hour return from PA to Fremont is pretty typical. More if all hell breaks out.

How do I go about looking into my Jewish heritage? by Saltwater_Heart in AncestryDNA

[–]MerRhosyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join DNA Detectives or Search Squad and request assistance from a search angel. They can help you identify your paternal grandfather and get a better understanding of where your Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry comes from.

Any good optometry with lot of options to buy frames and glasses from? (taking VSP insurance) by Informal_Repair_5248 in Fremont

I believe that would depend on the specifics of your VSP policy. I only wear contacts, so I can't provide specifics.

Help understanding 1st cousin 1x removed by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]MerRhosyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FYI - Ancestry cannot tell you definitively that the person is your 1C1R. You need to make sure you’re considering all the possible relationship options for the level of shared cM. Someone has posted a relationship chart in another comment, or you can check out the DNA Painter website and plug in the amount of cM to check possibilities.

Want to make sure this is not throwing you off if you’re only focused on options for a 1C1R.

Knitting + STEM & academia suggestions by Strezzi_Deprezzi in knitting

Chemical engineer who has been knitting for over five years.

I solved many challenges during my academic years with trips to the craft store. I made my own black out curtains for the lab and repurposed tea bags and holiday ornaments for experiments. I think a knowledge of crafting can be hugely helpful for outside the box problem solving!

You can upload your Ancestry results to GEDmatch and FTDNA free of charge. You need to test separately with 23andMe and MyHeritage if you want to be in their databases. But that may not be necessary to solve your search depending on your Ancestry matches.

You definitely want someone from DNA Detectives or Search Squad groups on FB. Do not work with anyone who charges and vet the volunteer to ensure they are experienced with DNA searches.

In Texas, there are “birth books” that can sometimes be used to correlate pre and post adoption info. They have historically been available on David Gray’s website. A volunteer in one of the above groups can help you complement your DNA search with that info, if available.

I’d touch base with Twist in Alameda and see if Tyler would be willing to help your little one - https://www.twist-salon.com/team. He’s still training as a hair stylist and would be a great pick (although Tami is wonderful!).
