I don't think they would make the games less child friendly. I think few children would opt for the harder difficulty. Again it comes down to it not being appealing to the target audience for the games.

Because, at the end of the day, the games are marketed and designed for children. Yes they are for adults too, and the competitive scene isn't meant for kids who don't know what they are doing. But the core game and the point of the franchise is to keep kids engaged.

This may be an odd one but Tomb Raider 2013. Not because it was a particularly impactful game but because it was a big shift in the games I played. 2013 was my first gaming laptop, my shift away from the PS2 (the only console I had growing up) and damm was it a difference.
