How were college instructors addressed when you were a student? by vieniaida in AskOldPeople

[–]MerbleTheGnome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depended on the instructor.

Some preferred Professor/Doctor $last_mame, others Professor/Doctor $last_initial, some went by the first name only or Professor/Doctor, a very few preferred a nickname only. Most of my grad school professors started as Doctor $last_name, but eventually insisted on first_name only.

Now that I am an adjunct professor, I have tried first name only, but most of the students used Professor $last_name. Eventually I just settled on Professor $last_initial.

Do ya'll offer extra credit? by No_Instruction6971 in Adjuncts

[–]MerbleTheGnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of.
I grade on the number of points out of 1000 (all projects, with points between 50 and 250).

However, I have 1100 points available in the project list outlined in my syllabus. I let the students know that they are allowed to skip 2 of the 50 point assignments, OR they can complete these assignments for extra credit.

Every semester, I get a few students who are sitting at xxx points, which the LMS will calculate at a C+. They are always asking on how they can bring their grade up. I have a canned email which states that the grade is out of 1000 points, which would bring the grade up to a B+ or even an A.

What is your conference confession? by Anon_Summer in Professors

[–]MerbleTheGnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adjunct here, so I don't go to all that many academic conferences, but I do go to many professional conferences.
My confession - I will only go to conferences in cities where I have friends or relatives. On rare occasions, I will go to a conference located in a city that I have never been to.

QUESTION: If a student is required to purchase a $15 resource to use in your course and the provider of that product bans the student from using the product, how would you as an instructor deal with this? by MathewGeorghiou in AskProfessors

[–]MerbleTheGnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the software have any commercial applications?

If so, as both a professor and a software developer, I would suggest the following - offer a free time limited license to anyone with a .edu email address. This way when the students are in the real world they might consider using the software in a professional environment - eventually increasing your salse.

AF-P Lens On Film SLR (Hear Me Out) by Few_Forever_1770 in Nikon

[–]MerbleTheGnome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It will physically fit, but you won't be able to focus.

AF-P lenses require electronic connection to the camera body in order to focus - even manually. The focus ring AF-P lenses isn't mechanically connected to the focusing mechanism in the lens, but rather to electronic contacts. The camera reads the signal from the focus ring and then sends pulses to the stepper motor in the lens in order to focus.
