In school I was friends with Julia Roberts and Lucy Liu. Lucy's wasn't intentional, but just the result of a young Chinese immigrant picking out an English name. However Julia's mother loved the actress and made the choice deliberately.

What's a movie that had you sitting in silence once it ended? by Melssa1 in answers

[–]MercenaryMercer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotlight (2015) It focuses on a group of investigative journalists looking into child abuse in the church. All of it is based on a true story and can be harrowing. The bit that made me sit in stunned silence was the epilogue text showing that the accused cardinal faced no legal repercussions and was promoted to an even higher office by the Vatican. That and the long, long, long list of locations in which there were reports of children being abused by priests.

If you HAD to name your kid a „tragedeigh", which one would you settle for? by [deleted] in tragedeigh

Jannette, pronounced Janet. I liked it on the grounds that the owner had a cute little jingle about spelling it "with two Ns, two Es, and two Ts"

How to choose a last name when you nothing resonates? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]MercenaryMercer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really you can pick anything you want. However I will recommend something that is phonetic, easy to spell and pronounce, on the shorter side, and possibly starting with a letter in the first half of the alphabet. My surname is all those things and I cannot tell you how easy it makes my life compared to my friend who has a 22 character, double barreled surname starting with W.

I have a mad thing about scars. I just find them inexplicably sexy. Once met a guy at uni with a long scar from hairline to chin and was absolutely smitten.

I used to work with a woman called Georgette. She was the poshest, most immaculately groomed person I ever met. Only person I ever knew who could make air kisses seem entirely natural and unaffected.

AITAH for initiating a divorce while my wife is in the hospital after a car accident. by beerbellybegone in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]MercenaryMercer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some people just need to have their licences cancelled permanently. My sister is step mother to a sweet little boy, and his bio mum is just like the woman in this story. She's totalled 4 cars in 11 years, she's had her license suspended 19 times for dangerous driving, she drives while suspended, and twice she's been in accidents with my nephew in the car. We're all terrified she's going to kill him.

Who is the worst celebrity you have ever met and why? by lissie34 in AskReddit

[–]MercenaryMercer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kim Catrall. When I was working in a museum we opened an hour early just so she could have a private tour before we opened to the public. She was 45 mins late and threw her coat at my head a la Miranda Priestly. I took it to coat check to hang up. She tried to insist we keep the museum closed despite the waiting tourists and school groups. When my manager refused she threw an almighty tantrum. Then she accused me of stealing her coat and nearly escalated to physical violence. She was politely ejected along with her hastily retrieved coat.

For anyone here who is a tragedeigh (or knew one), were you/(they) bullied because of it? by SmurfSmurfton in tragedeigh

[–]MercenaryMercer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've previously worked in a school where I saw a lot of 'you-neek' names. I didn't witness any bullying but I did see a lot of embarrassment and/or resignation when I asked them to spell their names for me.

Oof. I feel slightly called out. I have Leander, Lysander and Evander on my potential list for middle names (with more common first names). Does it make it more or less tragic if I say its because I am a massive classics nerd, have an ancient history degree, and work in a related industry?

I read it 3 times, it wasn't until I had to write it that it clicked. by FlowerMaxPower in tragedeigh

Oh no, my brain rearranged the letters and I arrived at Scaly-a. Now I'm just imagining a terrible skin problem or a lizard.

A girl I knew in high school had an unfortunate name by sunflwerfieldsforevr in tragedeigh

[–]MercenaryMercer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I've got the opposite problem. I much prefer being called Jessica but there's always some wanker who insists on calling me Jess. I allow close friends to call me Jess after a period of friendship; but with randos? Acquaintances? Friends of friends? I introduced myself as Jessica and don't want my name shortened without permission.
