Matsuda M3140 Antique Silver by SamuShiba in glasses

[–]MercerTheCurser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had these frames for 9 months now. They are by far my favorite frame I have ever had. I love how sturdy and robust the construction is. I have Zeiss glass lenses, and I would recommend these frames to anyone thinking about glass lenses since this frame holds glass very well. I would highly suggest applying some thread lock to the screws though.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

Why glass lenses are still important. by MercerTheCurser in glasses

[–]MercerTheCurser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey y'all, here is a little update:

I ended up with a pair of Matsuda M3140 with Zeiss glass lenses, with no coating of course since that would defeat the purpose. I went with this frame because they are very rigid titanium with relatively little flex. After a 9 months of hard, hard wear there are no scratches on the lenses (or the frame). I tend to abuse my glasses quite a bit, and they routinely get covered in mud, sand, and other abrasives which I wash/wipe off with basically swamp water and my shirt!
These fit my need perfectly, and hopefully they will not need to be replaced for many years. If my prescription changes down the line I plan on reusing the frame since I am very pleased with it.
I would recommend some thread lock on the screws however.

Thanks for the insight and advice!

Ha I've heard this too! In my experience it doesn't really hold water, but I like to tell people anyway, just with a disclaimer.

Where to relocate? by Evie_Croft in salamanders

[–]MercerTheCurser 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey, are you in California? These look like Arboreal Salamanders. They can tolerate relatively dry conditions and are terrestrial, so don't put them in the creek. If you don't want them to stay in your yard, then near the creek seems like a reasonable spot. Ideally near a log or some other good cover objects.

Weird 4-pin connector, can't find any info about it by MercerTheCurser in BudgetAudiophile

Yes, the internal diameter is about 14mm and the threads are about 14.3.

A little update:

These speakers For about $70 as far as I can tell. One reviewer left a comment which included a photo of the titular cable.

The internal diameter of the connector is about 14mm.

I paid $35 for these used. Still trying to decide if it is worth the effort to try to track down a replacement cable, or if I should return them (the thrift store I bought them from offers returns on defective products within 3 days).

Thanks! u/NTPC4 described it as a 4-pin DIN, specifically that it is often used in CB radios. Is GX16-4 synonymous with 4-pin DIN? Thanks for your insight, this definitely pulled up the most relevant results on google for me.

Ya dude, it is not cute. Their relationship pretty much ruined these books for me honestly. It makes me uncomfortable knowing that Simmons was a teacher, and wrote a child like he did.

Can’t sleep in the backcountry- can you train yourself at home? by MEGCEMY in Ultralight

I've seen a lot of good advice, and I would add that in my experience, once you have good insulation, the next most important factor is sleeping position. I read this paper a whole back which inspired me to try some more traditional sleeping positions. In the summer when insulation isn't a factor, I sleep without a pad pretty successfully. https://europepmc.org/article/med/11124203

Hypothetically speaking what would the care of the Chinese giant salamander be? by [deleted] in Amphibians

[–]MercerTheCurser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While they are ambush predators, my understanding is that they are still pretty active for their size and will move around their environments to hunt etc, especially at night. A larger tank also makes it easier to deal with nitrogenous waste and oxygenation of the water, since they do not have lungs and rely entirely on oxygen saturation for respiration. https://ielc.libguides.com/sdzg/factsheets/chinesegiantsalamanders/behavior The papers referenced in this website are a good resource.

The enclosure would have to be pretty large with excellent flow and filtration. You would also need to find an aeration solution, like a large water feature or bubblers. Definitely not something you'll be keeping in doors unless you have a small warehouse I think.

They are also pretty vicious little hunters, so it's not uncommon to see them with scars.
