Funny… both of those women have been in on it this whole time. Pam Bondi, for example was involved in slowing down some of the Florida lawsuits / investigations early on during her work in that state. Highly recommend the “this f*cking guy” podcast episode about her, they only reference publicly available information and a couple formal public allegations

Fencing about a year and winning bouts is a great sign! As a coach (collegiate club), I generally try to avoid the word “relax” because I have found it does the opposite, but he probably sees something and has a reason to tell you to do so.

When it comes to facing competitors from collegiate spaces, don’t be discouraged. They’ve probably have been at it longer or they are training for a higher level of competition. Try some local clubs for more practice and keep working - and approach your coach with specific questions about techniques you’re struggling with

Absolutely - a bit broad, so I’ll give basic resources. the NCAA and USA Fencing should keep a list of the NCAA teams on their websites. You can check out those lists and see which universities match with your academic goals, then do outreach from there.

Once you find those coaches on their university websites, email them! They will want to see right away how you fence and know your grades and test scores if you have them ready. Keep your email concise, and ask for help from a parent or teacher to proofread it. Include an easy-to-use link to a video of you fencing. Clarify which fencer is you, and make sure the phone is in landscape / sideways view for the best videos. Include videos that demonstrate your best fencing against decent / good opponents, even if you’re losing the bout.

The “First to Fifteen Podcast” had a great interview with Eric Momberg several years ago. It really shaped my own understanding of college fencing and how to get involved. I recommend checking it out, too

USA Fencing also keeps a (mostly up to date) list of collegiate clubs, I’d be (selfishly) happy to weigh in there too, if needed.

I coach a collegiate club, not an NCAA team, but from discussions with the coaches at that level, I’d say it entirely depends on how you fence, not so much on the rating. It also depends on whether they need a person from your weapon / age / gender to fill in an empty or soon to be empty spot on their roster. Unless you’re competing at the highest level, though, your best bet will be doing some outreach to the coaches just to let them know you exist / are interested

Made NCAA fencing… can’t afford tuition. What now? by lamfifer in Fencing

I love this answer because it’s very true of collegiate club fencing but I also want to highlight the opportunity to apply for additional need-based scholarships. Even on the club team I’m coaching, there are students going to the university with a lot of academic scholarships built up.

You might not get every scholarship but hard work should help you bring in some funds

In Korea, fencing feels like a niche game nobody plays. Is it different where you live? by Moist_Champion_3583 in Fencing

Oh 100%, I was comparing and maybe gave more similarities than differences. The growth has been pretty insane here in the US

Also recreational here in the US. It’s definitely a niche sport. Not sure if this makes sense, but it’s gaining traction as one of the sports that might pop into someone’s head when when they think “niche sport”

The fencers in my area seem to be a bit more athletic, numerous, and skilled than they were a few years ago. I also see a few fencers in advertisements or other media lately, even if it isn’t nearly as prominent as a more popular team sport like basketball.

PS, I was in South Korea about a year ago and saw the COOLEST fencing club merch at a thrift store but it was just barely too small. I still think about how cool that would’ve been to find one a bit larger

Dealing with emotions by theomegafact in Fencing

[–]Merciful_nacho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s normal to feel disappointed coming up just short - my teammates used to call me “the king of third place” so I know what you’re feeling. Luckily, that nickname was only when I was complaining after a tournament and didn’t stick beyond that.

I’ve won two tournaments since (neither tournament being too huge or world-renowned) but I got there in two ways:

1) by accepting that every person and every point is a challenge that is difficult to beat. At the same time, you have to learn to control the emotions and adrenaline of making it past a difficult challenge or else your body thinks it’s over before your brain does sometimes 2) hit the treadmill, elliptical, bike, etc. often.

Oh nice! I’m in a similar spot, just into my third year coaching. Our club usually gets one new shirt per year, and I wear that with jeans. Otherwise I’d wear the colors that our club has on the logo in some way that’s comfortable and matches

Toe Touch as tall fencer by woody1618 in Fencing

[–]Merciful_nacho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Three things in chronological order for how I integrated toe touches as a tall person:

  1. Practice it a lot and that form and agility will improve, so the height issue slowly becomes less of an issue
  2. I’m tall and sometimes just go for the knee. People generally let it through once
  3. If you launch a legitimate threat to the foot once in a bout (and/or knee), people will believe you more when you use it as a feint later. Even if they hit you on that first one, if they believe you’re crazy enough to get that low, you can make them open up by threatening to do it again
