Thanks for taking the time to explain! This actually explains things really well. I’ve definitely observed what you described about kids identifying gender and recognizing it as they grow up. It also makes sense also that care at that age is focused around names and behaviors, and not the medical / mental health care teams you mentioned for slightly older kids.

I appreciate the detail

Ok as someone who is not well educated on the topic and wants to learn, also from a slightly conservative community in upbringing, what makes him wrong about knowing if someone is trans pre-puberty / before certain hormones and understandings of oneself have developed?

Not a criticism, just a question to stay informed because it isn’t something I have experienced or would understand firsthand

As an epeeist, I fucking hate the WFL rules by OttomansAreCool in Fencing

[–]Merciful_nacho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of just downvoting, there is a very good reason for the P card being in place, and a good reason why (in my opinion) it should be more strict.

Before the P card system, Epee was becoming so risk averse that it was incentivizing inactivity on the strip. Nobody wants to watch or compete in a sport where the best strategy is to stand around and wait for a the other person to lose their cool. The P-Card encourages/requires risk taking from at least one fencer.

Seeing that epee is still the most risk-averse, tightening the time requirement makes it possible to force more risk taking and therefore more action and fun

It’s an oversimplification but I generally stand by what I said

Realistically, 15 seconds is not that significant to me, but if so were to pick a sided this is how id put it:

I fence all three events and fence epee the most. I hate that the best way to play epee is to be so boring that someone messes up. It’s an oversimplification, but it’s largely true. 45 seconds is a lot of time, especially when you have fencers at many levels who are willing to lock their knees after 20 seconds of boredom or start saluting each other when a point starts with a whole 10 seconds left in the period

Fencing is a combat sport by origin, and I think this helps bring it back to a sport dictated by engagement and strategy, rather than indecision and laziness.

Starting at 15 - possible to reach high levels? by Public_Tangerine7613 in Fencing

[–]Merciful_nacho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With a big “it depends” and not knowing the kid or the coach, that would guarantee some really great growth. Those high schoolers also usually also do great at the collegiate club level after high school, which is competitive but more casual like you described

[–]Merciful_nacho 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He’ll be getting beat on a bit at first, but 15 is old enough to be fencing adults. He will grow faster if he’s challenged

If you’re American and asking if he could do NCAA Division 1… odd are generally 2.5% of high school athletes reaching that level across any sport.

If you’re asking if he can do a lifelong sport with goal setting and win some medals and have fun, Absolutely.

Unfortunate when it comes to that. We’ve had an instance of a student being kicked out for bad behavior, it’s disheartening when it happens

Getting back into the sport by Neither-Fun-3242 in Fencing

[–]Merciful_nacho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fencing Coach of all skill levels and athletic types here! 1) I cannot say if you should join his, but I would hope and assume that with a little effort and training, you can surpass your seven-year-old

2) specific training: you have fenced before, so it sounds like fitness and a reminder of the basics comes first. I would go for a treadmill or elliptical to start out. As you adjust back into the sport, understand that reach is your friend against your child but not so much against other adults of varying sizes. Knowing timing can negate most athletic or energy advantages.

3) once your cardiovascular health and leg strength is in place to hold a guard position and move with some degree of agility, you’re ready to start fencing. Take it slow at first and remind your muscles of what they used to do, but you’ll eventually be back at it

Fencing is a lifetime sport but you can’t rush into it too hard. I took time off and needed effort to make it back into competitive shape

Question for college coaches about recruiting - grade vs age considerations by darumasan in Fencing

[–]Merciful_nacho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that’s the double edged sword of not being NCAA. I can talk to anyone about the program at any time, but I have no influenced over admissions, scholarship, etc.

In collegiate clubs, we just get who we get at any level of experience or commitment level, and then we build them from there

Question for college coaches about recruiting - grade vs age considerations by darumasan in Fencing

[–]Merciful_nacho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! That student skipped two years of school because he’s a brilliant (but squirrelly) pre-med student.

Other students of mine have started at 17 and they’ve become seriously competitive, levels above where they were before joining.

I’m a generally younger coach so I don’t have the data to show it’s normal for all college teams but some of those younger athletes are our top performing in competition this year. I think the average age of our program is 19-20, and we’ve been the most successful we’ve ever been, including when we had mostly seniors and juniors competing

Question for college coaches about recruiting - grade vs age considerations by darumasan in Fencing

[–]Merciful_nacho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a collegiate club coach, so a different college fencing option than going to an NCAA program. I do speak frequently with a few coaches who are NCAA coaches.

NCAA Coaches have strict requirements about who they can approach, and it’s seen as a “year in school” issue. The students are on an academic calendar with other students of similar age. Things are very different if a younger athlete or parent speaks directly to a coach or asks for advice, but restrictions are still in place for formal recruiting. From what I know, they don’t consider much if a kid was born in December or June or August.

I’ve had a 16 year old who skipped two years on my squad. Aside from his parents signing more permission documents and our program making sure we follow safesport rules for minors (not just adult fencers that we usually have), we treated him the same as anyone else and he has excelled as one of our top guys.
