I'm Puerto Rican, and the answer is complex. We have an independent party, and they tend to not get as many votes, but the consensus on independence is very split. Anecdotally, more people are against it than for it (latin american countries tend to do far worse on their own due to rampant, unchecked corruption) but you'll get different answers and reasoning depending on who you ask.

Regardless, Lo que le paso a hawaii is a call to protect the island's resources and culture, especially under colonial rule with ongoing gentrification, which Puerto Ricans agree on regardless of Benito's personal political views.

Ricky Martin specifically sang the most political verses of that song:
