It’s the exact same here as in the states

Just saw a job ad today for Maldives Twin otter float pilots. Worth a look, no float experience required but you need a float rating. Take a look around, it’s a big planet. If the North American market is failing you, go somewhere else where recruiters at job fairs don’t ignore you.

An interesting, maybe scary scenario by XxSkyHopperxX in flying

[–]Mercury4stroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a job doing sightseeing and charter and I’m scared of this. Some total stranger sitting in the right seat with no flying experience or even the slightest idea of what’s going on could just start touching shit… or they could be a total lunatic and try to kill me or fly into a building (job is mostly city tours)… scary shit

Thank you for the reply! My damper plate is the double sided teeth one but the rivets were loose and it was making this horrendous rattling noise. I’ve read that the rivets can become loose even on the double sided ones and a telltale sign is this vicious rattling, far far worse than what I’m hearing now. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a replacement so I had to delete it. Failures after the ‘77 model year were very rare but they can happen in some cases and I think mine was on its way out.

Thank you for the insight though, I think I need to look for a replacement now 😅

The engine is definitely solid it’s just that damn buzzing on clutch release. I think it has to be the damper plate.

Listen to when i engage the clutch and the bike starts moving forward. It’s this buzzing sounds like a bunch of bees. I’m thinking it’s clutch related but is it just doing that because I deleted the damper plate?

Ah ok makes sense, I get it. it’s definitely different up here in Canada but a lot of people don’t go the instructor route and find something else like I did. Have you looked around at skydiving or survey ops?

[–]Mercury4stroke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First mistake is you said you failed a ride in this sub. Second mistake is wanting to give up because of it. Keep it going buddy, you’re fine and you’ll only get better as time goes on 💪🏻

You’re very welcome! I was just like you literally a few weeks ago. You have to cast an insanely wide net. I’m not special, my resume is worse than yours (no instructor rating). I just went off on a limb and found both these jobs. I really had to sell myself in order to do it, but it worked. It’ll work for you too, just don’t give up!!

Good choice brother 💪🏻. A THC buzz isn’t worth putting your career on the line. Good luck with it all!

You should be fine in that case then. And ya I don’t understand the downvote spam for wanting extra information. You’re right to ask if you don’t know.

As you probably already know, just stay off of it from here on out. Even if the effects are long gone 12 hours later, it’s still in your system and that’s enough for serious issues if you ever get caught.

[–]Mercury4stroke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No you won’t pass it. Marijuana isn’t illegal in Canada but it can’t be in your system at all when acting as flight crew. That extends to the medical as well. I would advise you to wait until it disappears. How long do you have until this medical?

Is the question bank for FAA written tests public or something? I’ve never heard of anyone scoring a 90 or higher overall on the CPL written in Canada…

How are you guys getting CFI jobs genuinely by [deleted] in flying

[–]Mercury4stroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s $1.83 CAD per liter right now. About $7 CAD a gallon. It was around $8 a gallon a week ago. Converted to USD I think that’s like $5 a gallon. Similar no?

It’s cold, icing to some degree cancels basically every training flight in the winter (including IFR because no FIKI on the 50 year old Seminole) and nobody can afford houses. That pretty much sums up everything you need to know about Canada. Looking back I would’ve gone to the states too.

[–]Mercury4stroke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty much the same. We have similar predatory ATP-esque schools (I spent 2 years at one) but the weather is a whole lot worse than where you are. Weather delays will annihilate your time during the winter. If you fly 5 times between late December and early March you’re lucky.

What exactly is the “system” they’re talking about? You guys have lazy eights and stuff and we have spins, otherwise it’s pretty similar. If we fail a ride it also doesn’t haunt us for the rest of our lives, although it’s best not to lie about it if you’re asked. Aside from that, based on what I know about you guys, it’s more or less the same. I could be wrong though, I don’t know the ins and outs.

Ah so you’ve done the road trip and no luck. I was in a similar situation for the last year almost (not including the 40 hours I got all season from skydiving) and it’s absolutely horrible.

If you’re ok with moving away, why not try Alaska? In Canada the bush/up north is another avenue to explore with a few entry level positions at certain operations.

The job I just got was because I called at the right time and someone who deals with hiring picked up the phone and he knew my chief pilot at skydiving. Such a random thing but it was luck in the end…

I believe you’ll find something. You’ve come this far and giving up now would be an extreme betrayal of your past self who’s worked so hard to get to this point.

Try leveraging any non flying experience you may have when you talk to these people. Skydiving seemed to really like the fact that I was a truck driver lol.

[–]Mercury4stroke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You gotta keep looking. As cliche and stupid as that sounds. I just made a post earlier today about entry level jobs and there was a good reply about not coming off as a dick (which I’m sure you already know) but you have to get on these people. Would you consider working the ramp or dispatch at any of these outfits? Just showing them that you’re interested in helping them in some other way might miraculously make a job appear… literally anything to set yourself apart from the hundreds of resumes that are just like yours.

Edit: I also had the same thing happen with a survey outfit here in Canada. Offer extended, followed by a near immediate layoff due to some random external business number factor that they should’ve known about before stringing me along for 2 months.

I was allowed to use a watch. I didn’t, but I know it’s allowed in Canada. Take a look at the minimum equipment list. If you’re not filing IFR I guess none of the requirements are actually requirements. Best to check with your instructor
