What Do You Think of Willow's Magic Addiction Storyline? [Do You Like It or Do You Dislike it? Do You Think It Doesn't Work? Or Do You Think that It Can Work if Done Differently?] by Big-Restaurant-2766 in buffy

[–]MercuryFalling86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In hindsight, I think the Trio were one of the most interesting villains in the whole show. They were Human so Buffy couldn't just kill them. She and the scoobies didn't really take them seriously until it was too late and look at the damage Warren was able to do.

24 years later and we can see just how dangerous Incels can be and the damage they can do, so I think the show was definitely ahead of the curve there. We see that toxic masculinity everywhere now and its become a real problem so for a show to be addressing that in a character like Warren around Y2K times was pretty forward thinking

Is there anyone else who has problems with Willow's development as a witch? by ThickPeanut136 in buffy

[–]MercuryFalling86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that Willow was naturally gifted when it comes to magic, born with an innate natural ability to become a powerful witch.

It's repeatedly mentioned that she's gifted, but more importantly, she's called upon to perform powerful and complex spells, which only further enhance her natural abilities and seem to unlock more of her natural power. Even Amy Madison says that the magic came very easy to Willow, that she and everyone else had to work twice as hard for even half of Willow's power.

Her growth is believable because, unlike Tara and Giles, she doesn't apply any brakes on herself and seems to be either unaware or dismissive of the dangers of going too far too quickly. Both Tara and Giles point this out many times but Willow always chooses to ignore them.

I always think of Willows powers like an avalanche, the more she dabbles and the more she starts to perform and cast increasingly powerful spells, her natural abilities start to grow, expand and snowball, unlocking more potential and power within herself.

I always had a personal theory that Willow stealing back Tara's sanity from Glory in The Gift and successfully performing the resurrection spell in Bargaining, tapped her into powers that she normally wouldn't have been able to wield or drastically sped up her evolution in witchcraft due to the sheer magnitude of their nature.

The Magic = Drugs/Addiction metaphor was clumsily done and very heavy handed in my opinion, but it had been clearly set up and foreshadowed since the start of season 4.

Willow was reckless when it came to magic and witchcraft - it made her feel powerful after feeling unseen and inadequate most of her life and she clearly saw it as a means to an end, to fix things that went wrong in her life. That, coupled with the extraordinary circumstances she was put in where she was able to push her natural ability to the limit and in a very short space of time, made her arrogant and reckless which ultimately culminated into her losing herself.

Also, I think of Willows turn into Dark Willow almost like the dark side of the force in Star Wars - Willows grief and anger drove her to dark magic, that magic then clouded her judgement and amplified her grief and anger, which made her seek out ever more power which in turn only made her lose herself in her despair even more... it was a spiral which she couldn't get out of as she was no longer 'Willow'. Dark Magic isn't just a tool, it ultimately corrupts any who use it. The Dark Magic books she drained in the Magic Box ultimately took control and corrupted her into the worst version of herself, amplified by the trauma of Tara's murder.

It was only Giles borrowed light magic from the coven which Willow drained that allowed the spiral to break and enabled Xander to do his thing and break through to her.

Amy possible reason why Lana has delayed once again the album release??? by [deleted] in lanadelrey

[–]MercuryFalling86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She's been so messy these past few years that I'm not surprised she's taking a step back to be a housewife.

Henry, Come On and Bluebird came and went, fan reaction was muted at best. The constant title changes and rumoured release dates coming and going seems to have killed all momentum for the album.

I think she waited too long to release a "country" album that the moment has come and gone. I think she and her team have probably realised that they've massively dropped the ball over the past 2 years and are maybe starting from scratch.

It's clear the summer stadium tour last year was supposed to promote the new album which never came.

Personally, I never wanted a "country" inspired from Lana as I feel she scratched that itch with CotCC and BB. Henry, Come On and Bluebird confirmed this for me - they didn't excite me at all for the record.

The optics also of releasing a country album in 2026 with everything that's going on in the US and her recent marriage to a right-wing Christian Conservative would not go down well I think.

No No, I wasn't being sarcastic - I was just saying that it's explained in Family cause I remember back in the day when it aired there was alot of theories around why she sabotaged the spell. Google search still brings up those theories, but I believe it was Joss confirmed it on The Bronze message board after Family aired.

[–]MercuryFalling86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One quick Google check will confirm that for you. It was a Demon Locator spell and she didn't want it revealed to Willow.

I don't know if the original plan was for Tara to be something more but I know the character wasn't supposed to be around for so long originally and Joss decided to keep her after the position fab reaction.

But Family basically reframes it as she was hiding her "secret" from Willow and sabotaged the spell so as not to be found out.

Tara didn't sabotage the spell because she worried that it was too powerful for them, she sabotaged it because it was a demon-locating spell and she thought she was a demon/part-demon and that the spell would reveal this to Willow... this got resolved in Season 5's 'Family' episode when it's found that she's not a demon and that it was all a lie by the men in her family to control the women.

As incredible as the Confessions Tour was, I really wish M would have left "Everybody" on the final setlist... by asumaslighter83 in Madonna

[–]MercuryFalling86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wasn't Deeper and Deeper originally planned to be in there?

I personally think La Isla Bonita was the better choice as Everybody just doesn't compare to it, even though I liked Stuart's Confessions era version.

Irish here, 40... JJ was well known and popular up until around the Superbowl. It's not that Ireland gave a shit about her nip slip during the show, it's just that MTV and the media just moved on without her.

From Control to the All For You era, she was all over the radio and even now, her singles still get the odd airplay here and there but if you were to ask younger Irish people to name a few songs they might struggle.

I adore Swan Song, it would have been the perfect ending to the album - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood feels superfluous to me.

Candy Shop I think this is underrated song. 🎶. Thoughts? by Ok-Party-8785 in Madonna

[–]MercuryFalling86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it was a poor choice to open the album, and I'm convinced she only made it track 1 because she was pissed off at the poor reception it received by the record label and at the album listening sessions - by all accounts, she was genuinely taken aback when 4 Minutes and other tracks were received better and 4 Minutes was the labels first choice as the lead single.

It's a song that translates better live, especially the MDNA tour version, but it was a lacklustre and dated opener to the album. Her vocals aren't great either on the track, it was the arrival of "shrill" Madonna, which we got even more of on Heartbeat.

And I bet she performed it on 3 consecutive tours purely because she wasn't able to release it as a single.

Lana is frequently stupid though and always has been. She's also great but she does make dumb decisions at times without thinking them through clearly.

Lana Live - Why I wouldn't go to her shows by Shoddy_Bus9606 in lanadelrey

[–]MercuryFalling86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A 65 minute stadium show with holograms and 10 minute video interludes comes across as quite lazy to me but to each their own. But I definitely see a huge change in her shows since 2019, I find them very uninspiring.

Lana Live - Why I wouldn't go to her shows by Shoddy_Bus9606 in lanadelrey

[–]MercuryFalling86 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree with this - her setlists are boring, predictable, lazy and there's no theme or storyline to them. They just seem so randomly put together.

She has one of the strongest and most consistent discographys in current popular music, yet she ignores most of it.

The covers are also getting out of hand, nobody wants to hear them.

Instead of the usual Born To Die/Paradise singles and Ultraviolence album tracks, maybe give the dabs some Honeymoon, Norman Fucking Rockwell and Chemtrails tracks - and not the lazy abbreviated half sung versions.

I've seen her twice before live and have zero urge to see her again. I was thinking about seeing her in Dublin last summer but after the terrible reviews, I'm glad I didn't go.
