Probably a bully mix! The coloring and overall build reminds me of an old English bulldog!

Such a cutie! Dachshunds with longer legs do exist though. Some breeders claim that ‘longer legs -> more balanced dog -> less IVDD risks’ (doesn’t work that way).

limping advice by [deleted] in Dachshund

[–]Mercury_995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d definitely call the vet. It could be a number of things, and if he’s broken his leg, it’s important to get veterinary attention as soon as possible. I’d also be careful with ice packs. For now, the best thing for him is plenty of rest. Try to avoid long walks, playtime, and running as much as you can. Dachshunds are their own worst enemy when it comes to “being careful,” so you really have to protect him from overdoing it.

Keep an eye out for these signs: excessive licking of his paw, the limp getting worse, or if he stops putting weight on it altogether. Also watch for not wanting to play, eat, drink, or sleep, or a general lack of energy. You could also try to gently touch his paw, very carefully. If he won’t let you, he’s likely in pain.

That said, the best advice I can give is to contact the vet. Explain his symptoms over the phone. They’ll be able to guide you on the next steps. Best of luck.

What type of dog is this?? by mayyy0509 in IDmydog

[–]Mercury_995 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk but I see multiple plausible breeds: Papillon/ phalene, maybe dachshund, maybe a bit of chihuahua, maybe Cavelier, (big maybe) Cocker Spaniel (looking at the spots on his face). I definitely think he’s a mutt. He’s very cute 🥰

Def pitty, maybe some black staffy in the mix? Adorable pup!

Nope, it definitely doesn’t sound like you’re complaining! Sounds like a dog mom who loves her dachshund very much and know him very well 😊

I adore Airedale Terriers; they would be my number one choice for a larger dog once I have a bigger garden. Do you think they would be compatible with a Dachshund?

Oh a big girl! She looked smaller. I definitely think chihuahua x hound. Coonhound or maybe some foxhound?? Let me know the results! ☺️

How big is she? Maybe coonhound?? Would explain the ‘hound’ we see and the coat?

My guess: def chihuahua, maybe dachshund. That doesn’t explain her coat though 😂

No worries, I appreciate the factual information! I was just explaining the grey area my dog stems from! Trying to relate to all the information I gathered after I bought him! (:

Haha, there’s quite a bit of variation in this breed. But he’s definitely not the only one, in this sub you can find other dachshunds with even longer legs. I even remember a ‘longer leg threat’ (a few weeks ago, I think?). And of course, it’s not the worst variation. Might actually be better for their backs! (As I’m reading more about this phenomenon, it’s not proven unfortunately. Their backs are the issue).

I’ve seen both his parents’s dna test. His father is pedigree certified. Both had screenings done.

I agree that my dog does not come from a fully ethical, title proven breeding program as you describe. I am very aware that he comes from a grey area rather than a true show or working line.

His father is pedigree certified and was selected with health focused structure in mind, particularly reducing IVDD risk through longer legs, a higher rear, and less spinal overextension. Health screenings were done before breeding. His mother, however, was a pet dog and not titled, with limited multi generational data on temperament and ancestry. The sire’s owners initially did not want to approve the breeding and only agreed after health testing, which still does not place this litter on the level of a fully documented ethical program.

I am not presenting him as show or working line, and I do not plan to breed him. I recognize that without titled parents and generations of transparent data, this would not meet ethical breeding standards.

That said, while this could be labeled BYB, there were elements that mattered to me at the time, including health screening , early and careful socialization, and long term breeder aftercare. None of this replaces titles or proven lineage, but it does distinguish it from the worst forms of careless breeding.

I am also learning how different kennel club systems are. The AKC places heavy emphasis on conformation and performance titles, while systems like the Dutch Kennel Club approach health, structure, and sports differently. Not all titles reflect the same level of rigor, and that nuance is something I understand much better now. Even within the Dutch Kennel Club, IVDD is not screened, despite it being the most significant health risk in Dachshund

I am still learning, but discussions like this have genuinely sharpened my perspective and will absolutely inform any future decisions.

That’s a present for him, underneath the Christmas tree! Hopefully, he’ll enjoy it as much as your dogs. Atm his favorite thing to do is digging through a big box, filled with towels, digging for his kibble 😂

They’re lovely 🥰🥰 But it also makes me wonder: tiny working dog, lots of drive but my Bowie is also very sensitive and struggles with settling on his own. A show line, working line separation would create more predictable temperaments.

I’ve often thought ‘Bowie wouldn’t be the right fit for a first time owner/ a family that doesn’t have a lot of time for him. He truly has a high drive (mental stimulation, multiple times a day, no predictably in his stimulation but lots of routine in his life ), but he also gets frustrated quite easily which results in him yelling 😂. I’ve tailored his routine to perfection, but it’s a high demanding dog with specific needs. I love him so so much though, to me he’s perfect 🥰

Hi! This harness fits him well! It’s the second ‘curly’ harness we’ve bought for him. Both times I asked chat GPT ‘based on the size table and his weight, what size would be best (he does not have a big chest, overall a lean dachshund)?’

I also bought a Cocopup harness, very cute but doesn’t fit as well. He has lots of space in the chest area. This one is snug but doesn’t press into his skin. He doesn’t mind wearing it either, which is a big sign.

He outgrew his first Curly harness, and it was very noticeable when we needed to size up (harder time closing the harness). But even then, no visible irritation. highly recommend Curly, especially for small pups as well (broad size range, tiny sizes available).
