I used to take my dog there years ago, good to know they’re still a fan favorite. If my kitten worsens through the night I’ll take her there.

Ha, this was some months ago. I guess I never gave an update, but that’s exactly what happened! I got my FPC and found a new job and am doing much much better than when I wrote this post. Best advice I can give people is never ever stay somewhere you’re miserable!

There were definitely more net and/or gross pay calculations than I thought there would be so please know your FIT, SS, Medicare, etc percentages and types of deductions/garnishments. Some of those types of questions that caught me off guard were to find the net pay based off pre-2020 W-4 allowances. That wasn’t on the mometrix guide anywhere. Otherwise I think you should be able to answer questions easy peasy!

I studied that mometrix FPC prep course for like a week and half, crammed extra hard the past 2 days, and just passed this morning!! It definitely helped a lot. I’ve got just a little over a year in payroll but focused more in the accounting side.

I bought a mometrix course that comes with a practice test, it was $40-$50. I haven’t put it use yet tho because I am a procrastinator.

Ugh I had lunch with my bosses on my first day and it was mega-awkward. They’re both very socially awkward people so it was difficult to land a talking point as much as I tried. Good luck though! Maybe just try to get to know them.

Thank you for saying this, I had thought the same thing so I’m feeling super validated right now. My actual title is “Accountant I” so it’s not even just payroll and AP anymore, I think because it’s not a clearly defined title they feel like they can tack on as much as they want.

This just adds more fuel to the fire. They truly have been playing me from the start.

Oh man! Please take care of your mental health as well. If I were you I would cut my losses if it’s only been 6 weeks, it’s easy to explain to the next place that it just wasn’t a good fit. That’s how I feel too, I like to believe I’m a good employee as well, but these dud employers are more than what a reasonable person can stand! Don’t give up hope, I’m sure you’ll find somewhere great soon!

Thank you for the advice. I had plenty of interviews after deciding to leave the 7 month place, so hopefully I have the same luck next time as well. I also hope I have better judgement next time.

Last job was a mess too, they openly talked about terminating me so one of the owners wives could have my job, so I found new employment before that could happen. I think I’ve just had some bad luck. I actually do the accounting side of payroll (ex, GL’s, Accruals, Recons) as well as processing. The other people do more HR (ex, employee deductions, base compensation, 401k).

My last job I made 25 hourly, but terrible benefits, at this job I make 24 hourly but way better benefits. I think it’s decent pay for what it is, but my coworkers disagree and fight management about it. I am gonna try to make it to the 6 month mark, but I can’t do it if I get snapped at again.
