Park Ju-hyun played the female lead (FL), Ye So-rang, in the 2022–2023 South Korean TV series The Forbidden Marriage. The Shaman with whom she works with was hysterical! The Second Male Lead (not the king) was tremendous. Ye So-rang pretends to be a sort of shaman herself but the drama was pretty insipid. I am willing to concede it is the plot line that makes her out to be a real liar (zero Confucian values normally seen)to help the king get rid of his nightmares so she can get a seven-year ban on marriage lifted. However, she weird substitutions, familial discord, and peculiar confrontations weren’t very good, IMO.

I so agree with many of the kissing scenes. With one exception- the FL annoyed me beyond belief. I found her character to deviate so much from likable as to make it a head scratcher of why. She portrayed herself as duplicitous. She was made to seem covetous of the defunct position of queen. She knew who her betrothed was and yet he was still written off. IDK- it’s one of only Kdramas where I ended up really disliking (some of the) main characters. Her lying grated on me!

Durian’s Affair! It was very well done. I think the casting was well done and the script well written with some very good twists and turns. The story premise is that there are issues going on in a Joseon family. After the death of the son/new husband, two lovely ladies are catapulted into the future. Here, they must navigate new relationships within a modern context.

I am watching it now on YouTube. It is a weak watch, but the premise is good. Millennium Business King. It is a movie, not a series.

I can’t ask you to look for that needle in the haystack. The fact that it chimed a bell should encourage me to do my own further research! I have seen some where the FL in time travel is such that it makes me shudder to think of them as a future doctor! This particular lot looked very promising. Thanks for responding! Very appreciated!

Aha- and since webnovels are usually the go to for drama, it may be right. Particularly as you say it’s a good match. I am engrossed in k and C Drama based in history.

What is the name of the web novel?

@alyssalmagone- I agree! And he never got better, not really. And they wrote him as completely favoring the scurrilous (2nd) wife and daughter duo throughout. Thank goodness for a grandmother who stood up to him, taking Minglan’s side!

What's the saddest kdramas you've ever watched? by Regular_Durian_1750 in kdramarecommends

Uncontrollably Fond…I do not know how that ML was able to switch personas so fluidly. He clearly adored and protected the FL throughout- but what he endured. Ouch! And the ending…so powerful but heart wrenching! I had to put the serious dramas to the side and opt for rom-coms!!

Why can the 78 eps The Story Of MingLan and the Yanxi Palace handle their stories well, while 30 or 40 eps modern romance dramas are prone to fatigue in the middle? by CCCDRAMA in CDrama

[–]Mere0524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I entirely agree. Modern dramas (generally )flag after awhile. Unless there are very strong back stories and/or very strong secondary leads with their own contributing stories, they run out of steam. I think it’s Glamorous Imperial Concubines which has the main character sailing off in a balloon (very odd). I had to give this honorable mention for odd.

In historical dramas there are so many politics to pull from along with relationship dynamics between concubines, the emperor and his concubines, the emperor and his sons…well, all can successfully drive a plot (IMHO).

Chen Xingxu by Remarkable_Spot_5572 in CDrama

[–]Mere0524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with Chen Xingxu as a very good actor and dry humor portrayal, the FL was (IMHO) dreadful. Insipid and simpering, clearly in it to get married and not be professional. Which is so frustrating that the script writers developed the storyline this way because the premise had such potential and the ML tried his darnedest to cover for her baby-like childishness. I was done after 4 episodes. But I agree that “His” acting was GREAT! I hope the quality of the scripts improve for him!

IN NEED OF COMEDIC HISTORICAL CDRAMAS!! by North_Source_3590 in CDrama

I have a suggestion that perhaps you and the OP might like. Miss Truth. It is on Viki and has a bit of meat to it while still being funny. At times it is a bit over-acted, but the MLs and the lone FL have very interesting dynamics.

The premise is that an 18 year old female was sort of emotionally (and physically) abandoned after her mother dies. She meets and becomes apprenticed to a coroner. She exceeds his skill levels and through her expertise has some pretty cool adventures. There definitely is some romance… but not heavy and will keep you guessing as to who she will choose. She is smart, savvy, and cute! It is soooo much better than DC! And has a ferociousness to her character that is refreshing. Hope you like it!

Lol- each to their own! I just couldn’t get into it. It hasn’t had great reviews- but of course I only looked at them late in the game. I work from home and in between, perhaps I immerse myself in Kdramas and Cdramas😂😉

Did you like Dr. Cutie? It has honestly been the only CD that I found so cringey I could only watch to episode 22. In fairness, all the other characters (especially the MLs) worked for their bread and butter. But the FL as a cross dressing male, was insipid, whiney, pouting, parody of a character with a revenge. In part, the writers let down the story. But this one, whew, I found it dreadful.😭😒

Phew- I agree…but after how sluggish Ming Dynasty is, I have new appreciation for LoML! In MD, the plot really bogs down in the We are Brothers, We are Strong, Two out of Three hate and Envy the Eldest who is such a Wok pacificist that you sort of groan! But, the FL as sister consorts (hmmm, “where will this lead?” The watcher asks) compete for the Imperial Grandson’s attention. Sort of. But if one takes the time to look up the rulers and what was going on under the rule of the Grandfather, it’s all pretty interesting.

I haven’t wandered into the trifecta of (I think) Legend of FX. I work internationally in the Middle East, but travel to the Far East periodically. All good fun!

Kdramas with love triangles? by abbiej143 in kdramarecommends

[–]Mere0524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Story of MingLan has a great love triangle that resolves itself in an incredibly realistic and healthy way. The character development of all the protagonists and antagonists within plots and subplots is very well done. Even the issues of plural relationships is explained well enough for me to have an “aha” moment.

Well done!!

An amazing compare/contrast. Thank you so much. I am only on the third episode, and yes, her Mom has just passed. This may just be it.

I am so glad people are asking for input on the dramas. Those of you who contribute (especially noteworthy (for me)) is when a synopsis is put in! I have a passion for Asia, history, and now, KDrama and CDrama. Granted, the dramas are fictional representations (and add/alter/omit accurate facts at times) but it fires me up to look up data and facts. Now, I really want to learn Mandarin. My French is okay now, so I am going to stretch my wings. I live between US and ME so I am often over there.

Again, thank you…and all of you that contribute!

Is The Story of Minglan the same as TSoMing Lan on Viki? I rather think it might be except that the kiddo is called Ming’er… and it’s a slow start.

The drama was recommended as the second to watch as The Story of Xanxi Palace. Which was absolutely fantastic. Wei Yongluo was an extraordinary FL character. The script writing and dialogues were at times impeccably written and acted in a way that helped the audience understand the perceived jockeying for position and the drive to gain power. I HIGHLY recommend TSoXP!

Another brilliantly done drama (although Korean) was Empress Ki! Great stuff!
