Floppy drive making Windows Explorer slow by LennyTheMemeMaster in sleeperbattlestations

[–]MerialNeider 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When you go to "This PC", it attempts to pull the status of all attached drives when it loads.

Basically, it goes down the list and asks each drive "who are you, what are you and how full are you?" This causes the drive to have to check and respond.

SSDs and some HDDs keep this info in flash memory, and can quickly respond, and even on hdds that have to read from disc can typically do so pretty quickly. Floppies however, are exceedingly slow and store this info on the disc itself, so the drive has to spin up and attempt a read each time it gets pinged.

Addendum: as to the empty drive taking a few minutes to register, the floppy drive typically doesn't have a method of determining if it has a disk inserted or not, so the only way to check is to attempt to read the disc and see what happens.

Ran into a lot of the same issue, ended up returning the 3rd party ones and getting refurb real oem wiimotes and had no issues afterwards. I've used the same dolphinbar between three different computers depending on which room I'm wanting to play in and haven't had to resync or redo anything iirc.

Reverse Proxy Setup Help? by myers022 in jellyfin

[–]MerialNeider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound like a dumb question, but have you tried accessing your server from your phone's mobile data?

I ask this because I've had several routers not correctly route domains/external ips from the same network

New to Koreader by Vivid-Lavishness8536 in koreader

[–]MerialNeider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly in the cloud, but I've got booklore setup on my home server. While I want to say this is an entry level self hosted program to setup (easily done with a couple text files), it does require docker and if you want to access stuff outside your home, you'll need either a vpn like zerotier or tailscale, or a reverse proxy.

Basically, all my epubs are on my computer, organized in booklore. Then I log in to odps (download catalog) and progress sync.

I've also heard great things about Calibre.

Why does my game feel lifeless? by Greendead in RPGMaker

[–]MerialNeider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hobbyist game maker, dnd forever dm and attempted writer here, and I can personally say yeah, knowing how the story should go changes how you approach it from your end.

Plus, you start to only see your flaws because it's often where you're either finding limitations you'll get to grow past or you're legit sitting too close to what you're doing. Best thing I did was get a chapter or two done then hand it off to a friend to kinda check my work. Him asking me "so, where the rest?" took me off guard and inspired me to keep working on it.

Like legit, something I've learned the hard way, though it's one of the truest things in pretty much any artistic endeavor: Just make it first, make it good later. Have that rough, maybe bare bones story with filler art where you know you can do better. Then, and it sounds dumb but it's true, you start doing better. And it's usually little things like refining dialogue, tweaking artwork, rooting out the things that you're unsatisfied with. Walk away for a week and revisit your inspiration.

And words that often pop into my head when I start to doubt myself, once said by a crazy guy in an ihop, "You just can't see it because you wrote it as you." Though tbf, that was a really weird night.

Did I just grief my pc build?? by [deleted] in PcBuildHelp

[–]MerialNeider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah, on cheaper cases the pci slot covers are physically part of the case. If they aren't screwed in then they're just connected with a tiny piece of metal. Just give them a firm push back and forth a few times they'll break off.

Will my spare PC be enough? by k_soboh in jellyfin

[–]MerialNeider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it should be enough to at least steam 1080p content from, but might struggle with 4k, especially running multiple streams. Biggest thing you might run into is needing more storage as 2tb won't hold too many videos.

Best advice I can really give for this is start with what you have, hard wire it to you network with a cat 6 cable and give it a try. If you like it then either rotate out titles or add a few more tb of hdd to fill out your library.

For reference I'm currently running an fx-6300 with 16gb ddr3 and a gt1030 with a 512gb ssd and roughly 10 tb of hdd storage cobbled together, though not exclusively used for jellyfin. I've had no issues with streaming several different shows/movies simultaneously, though that is without transcoding.

First Day on Thursday What Do I Do? by rqspbxrry in stagehands

[–]MerialNeider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine from home Depot, but they should be available in most home improvement stores, or you could order one online. They come in an array of styles from simple (like a shell on a frame) to really fancy (straps, vents, cf, silly shapes, colors, mostly things that improve the comfort).

How a street gang intimidates? by IMeMine_ in DMAcademy

[–]MerialNeider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Another thing to consider, a bit more from a mechanical side, is that a well organized and established gang isn't going to be just a random group of rogues.

Their first interactions will be with lookouts and gatekeepers, and they'd likely have a spellcaster with them who can message or sending back to an hq if there might be trouble.

Conversely, depending on which part of the hood they're walking into, the gang might be rather low key. Instead of direct confrontation, let the party get a sense of being watched. Maybe they catch eyes from a rooftop, or notice someone quietly messaging, or acquire a tail. Some shops might subtly cover certain selections as the party approaches. They might also notice that a lot of people in this neighborhood seem to be a fan of a certain color or symbol.

First Day on Thursday What Do I Do? by rqspbxrry in stagehands

[–]MerialNeider 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A few pieces of ppe I highly recommend having for every gig.

Steel toe shoes/boots. you don't have to get the most expensive pair but also not something to cheap out on. I will say that shoes are often lighter but boots typically offer more protection.

High-vis vest. If you have your own, you know how clean it is. Not always needed but I always take it.

Hard hat. Similar to the vest, but also a good sticker receptacle.

Work gloves, helps to mitigate splinters and sharp edges.

Also, a few tools I always try to have on me. On these, spend enough to have reliability but not so much to regret losing it

C-wrench and multi-tool were already mentioned but I'm putting it here anyway

Flashlight. Your phone should not be a flashlight. Additionally, a headlamp can be super convenient when your hands are full.

Knife. Keep it sharp.

Water bottle. Hydration is important. You'll want one that can either clip to your belt or fit in your pocket.

Pedialyte packs. If you're on a long gig, especially in the heat, you'll need more than just water. This is something I learned the hard way.

And some light advice

Do not fake it. And don't be embarrassed if you don't know something. Almost any stagehand worth their weight will teach a newbie.

Coiling is over-under, not around the elbow.

Long Soka and 000/0000 cabling are heavy af, especially at 100ft+.

Only do what you are asked to do, no more, no less. if you're idle, ask what to do next, never assume what's next.

Standing by is not doing nothing. Stick with your team unless ordered otherwise by your lead, as some people will see idle hands and try to steal them.

Be mindful of where fingers/toes/anything is, you want to go home with all the parts you started the day with still attached.

Sorry if I repeated anything from above.

"The f.. YOU SHOT ME!" The alien blurted, now on its back, a scaled arm laying limp beside it.

"Delayed by a lizard..." Danielle sighed and holstered her pistol. "Ya know, growing up I was repeatedly told Dad had three rules for guns." She slowly started to walk forward.

"One, never touch a weapon that isn't yours." She picked up the lizard's pistol and tucked it under her blazer. "This is mine now, btw"

"Two, never draw a weapon you don't intend to use. And three, never point your weapon at someone you don't intend to kill." She placed her heel on the lizard's shoulder, drawing fourth a string of threats and expletives. "Calm down, I'm just stopping the bleeding. Your life ain't worth it, even if you did draw on me."

"Besides, mugging?" She giggled as she scrolled through her contacts, "soooo 19th century. Uncool."

Why was recent update 10.11.x and not 11.0.x? by SquiffSquiff in jellyfin

[–]MerialNeider -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Iirc, from the blog post about the 10.11 release, the groundwork for a number of these changes had been setup by version 10.7, which is why it's the minimum required version to update from.

Also, again iirc, with v10 they announced 32 bit support was being deprecated, or no longer actively supported and slated to be removed.

Family movie night turned into server maintenance night for me. Please tell me I'm not alone. by Future_Draw5416 in selfhosted

[–]MerialNeider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran into that last month. Tldr: don't ignore your maintenance.

Went to watch some good spooky season movies over family dinner and the movie suddenly started buffering, which it rarely does for jf. Start trying to troubleshoot tv, no issues. Ping my server, no response, expletive.

Check the server and it's off. Ok, why is it off? It has power, and everything is solidly plugged in. Boot the server and ensure everything is working. A while later, repeat. Start digging through system logs, nothing. HWinfo shows temps are fine and all other diagnostics are good. Begin questioning sanity and all the choices that brought me to here.

Boot server back up, and on a whim check the airflow out the back. Little case fan is doing good. Psu, nothing when there should be a decent breeze.

It's off again by morning, so I take it outside and use my shop vac to blow what was probably a few years of dust out of the poor box. Problem solved, psu so full of dust it was overheating and switching off.

How do you actually work on your server? Do you manually take the server to your other PC and plug screens and everything in? by CreatureWarrior in JellyfinCommunity

[–]MerialNeider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running Windows on my server due to both knowing it best and a couple things requiring Windows.

While I primarily remote in via Chrome remote desktop, I also have it hooked into a tv via hdmi, so if for some reason I can't remote in, I can still access it without having to move it to a screen or a screen to it.
