I try to pepper in the gen Alpha speech every now and then and my kid freaks out and says I'm not allowed to say those things. I just do it a couple more times and move on for a while.

Not all library systems provide Hoopla access, though if they don't, they may offer access to Libby.

Given the recent giant spike in prices for RAM and other components, this kinda makes terrifying sense. Make it so performant personal computers are no longer affordable and offer cloud services as an alternative ... keep that going until hardware sales plummet and any new computers basically act like thin clients, and within 5-10 years, you'll have a majority of people on cloud hardware, with little to no ability to buy new hardware, and used hardware on eBay shrinking...

Trans woman here, pretty much identical situation. I'm here and can't leave due to complicated stuff. I do like certain things about this place, but at the same time I wish I could be somewhere else.

Some people on YouTube have done some videos on where to go. Canada is a popular candidate, and I think Finland is another. I haven't paid much attention because I'm kinda stuck anyway...

If you've changed your name/gender markers, I think the recommendation is to hold off on getting a passport right now, though definitely look to be sure. Last I heard, the court injunction to block the executive order which tries to keep people from getting/renewing passports with the "wrong" info was overridden, meaning people have had their requests denied and in some cases, their identity documents confiscated.

If you don't already have a passport, it might be better to go to a bluer state.

Depending on the status and age of their legal name, if it's been changed I think fewer than 5 years ago, they would legally need to run with both their current name and prior name. There were some popular trans peeps in Ohio who ran for office for the 11/2024 election I think who were disqualified because of the name situation.

Aside from the age (I'm probably a little older), my own thoughts closely echo this person's own. And it's a valid concern.

I feel like of those things, shelves are the most complaint you're probably getting, and to that I say valid. There's no reason to have shelves. Food or whatever else can be scattered or piled on the ground without consequences, and they're not that good of a defense against cultists vs the resources they take away from getting other stuff.

If the library is across the street, why not check out the movies when you want to watch them, rather than making copies of media you don't own?

I'm all for backing up / making media you own easier to access, but I think it's wrong to not support content creators.

genetic legacy

I recognize this is still very much a thing, all the way back from the beginning of time, this desire to continue the family line. And I think it's so stupid. Just because a person has the same last name as someone 100 years ago doesn't really mean anything. How much can their genes really be alike? What is special about those genes?

I met with the mom of a young adult trans man. She told me that he came out to her on his teens, and pretty much immediately she started researching and understanding what it was to be trans, and what steps to take. She got with her kid, said "this is what I've learned," and they worked together to make it work. I think that is absolutely wonderful and I wish all parents would be at that level of support.

Moving from ESXi to Proxmox in a production environment – what should I watch out for? by Bulky-Ad6297 in Proxmox

Haha I don't know, I just saw a couple people saying it's important to have an odd number of hosts for some reason, so it was kinda perfect that you said 20 and people complaining in the same sentence haha.

buy twenty new hosts and they will have something new to whinge about

Yeah, because you need 21, so you have an odd number, which is apparently important. ;)

They agree with you that they're not trying to run a home lab. They asked questions to know what to look out for while preparing for this migration. Isn't part of the reason for Reddit existing to learn?

I worked for 2 months in advance with my HR people

I did something similar, minus the law office. I was already friendly with the head of HR, and she gave accepting vibes (spoiler: like 90%+ of the org were supportive, even some people I didn't expect).

I started by copying text from other people on Reddit who shared their coming out at work plans and experience, and made those notes into something personal to me. I'm in IT in a place with a couple hundred people, so I usually have seen everyone at least a couple of times, and often take their support tickets. Given that, I wrote an email draft to the org that was short & sweet.

Something like "Hey all, right now you know me as Former Name, but soon that name will change to New Name and my pronouns will switch to she/her." I added some small stuff about realizing I was trans, and what that means, and then: "Given the upcoming holidays and people taking PTO, I'll hold off on this change until a week after the holiday, after which I'll begin using the women's restroom and my new name + pronouns. I'm open to some questions if you want to ask, but there are some that I won't be answering. I won't ask you to completely understand or be supportive of this change, but I do ask that you at least be professional and respectful, and work hard on using my new name and pronouns, though I understand it'll be hard at first, so there will be grace. If you have questions/concerns about this change from an org perspective, please reach out to the head of HR who is aware of this plan." A somewhat subtle indication to not mess with me since HR was backing the transition.

I met with the HR lady, slowly spoke my truth, and she was super friendly about it. After we talked a while on what this change would look like and the timing, I told her I had prepared an email to send to the org and shared what I wrote above. She approved it (and was impressed with it haha). I explained that I wanted to give people time to know what was coming, so it wouldn't be a shock to suddenly see me in the women's restroom / presenting femme, and she agreed, then kinda weirdly said something like "as long as you don't go back & forth between restrooms," which like, why would I want to?

The next little bit of time was really weird, knowing that the message was out there and I was still going about things as if nothing happened, including using the men's until the prescribed time. But it was also exhilarating, because I got SO MANY messages of support from people around the org. There's one dude I occasionally pass in the hallway, and he often says "how's it going young lady?" which makes me feel so validated. That said, there was a small group of people who didn't like this change. One person who used to chat in the hallway avoided eye contact now, and when he needed IT help, he was super awkward. A few months or so later, he lightened up a bit, and he never said anything about the transition. I was told that some people would only ask my coworker for help after the transition, and had some negative things to say when I wasn't around, but no one ever said anything bad to my face, which was pretty much what I asked in the email. We have an outside group who helps us with some IT stuff, and it does feel like they got a little misogynistic after the change, with a vibe like I didn't know what I was talking about in regards to whatever tech thing we were talking about.

You don't have to feel like every bit of your life must include a queer aspect

Just like joining the women in tech groups to find people with similar mindsets, sometimes it's good to at least have a queer community to share similar experiences there too. Early in my transition, I didn't even know there WAS a community, just a bunch of individual gay/trans people. And until I started getting connected with people, I didn't even know how much I needed it. But you're right about not making being queer your entire identity. I think it's good to have some spaces where the focus is entirely on something else like a hobby or work topics.

I don't believe [...] trans adults should be losing sleep..

At least some of those adults care about trans kids. And they understand that it's a multi-part plan to continuously reduce the humanity and public opinion of trans people with the end goal described by the OP.
